I wonder how many people online going on and on about Sharknado have also criticized SyFy cancelling "real" science-fiction programming.

Because, you do realize that the success of Sharknado really serves as a validation of SyFy's programming decisions, don't you?

I know it's not in the sci-fi genre, but SyFy has a really excellent series, the US/Canadian version of Being Human.

www.badhaven.com

I love this show, especially since the British version has sucked goat balls since Aidan Turner and especially Russell Tovey left. The US version hasn't re-cycled the UK plots, and after a bit of a rough start early in season 1, they've hit their stride. Highly recommended.

Didn't she brag about not being a sci-fi fan when she took over the Sci-Fi channel? Said something about a fresh pair of eyes, new directions, so excited,  typical corporate-speak for "I don't know what I'm doing, but I'm in charge so I'm right."

So now, instead of FTL Newsfeed, we get wrestling.

Such a disappointment.

This person is an idiot. Like many dipshiat executives who have ruined all that is good with America she based her crappy reasoning off pure profit and farking "shareholders". There's no compromise with these idiots; their MBAs dictate their lives but they know nothing about the business they manage.

She's an example of the class that destroyed the American dream. And she's a moron.

Cyno01: Id be hard pressed to come up with a top 10 list of sci fi tv shows at the moment, because without lumping in horror and fantasy, i dont think there are 10 sci fi tv shows on the air right now.

I like to wait for seasons to finish then marathoning, Revolution sucked, waiting for S2 of Continuum to finish, is Defiance even worth watching?

Is there any other sci fi im missing? Good or even just ok? Or should i just rewatch Farscape for the 5th time. I want spaceships and aliens and lasers damnit.

Defiance is...okay.  If it's a choice between Defiance or nothing, I'll say it's worth a watch.  Mostly because there is such a complete dearth of real hard sci-fi shows out there right now.  By that I mean the more fanciful "Star Trek"-type show with aliens and stuff like that.  If Defiance got cancelled in the off-season, I wouldn't care one iota.  After they cancelled Alphas, it's going to take a hell of a show to get me hooked on anything on Syfy anytime soon.  Eureka and WH13 had a good run and it's probably for the best that they were cancelled, but Alphas still had a lot going for it.

As for even 10 sci-fi shows being on right now, let's see what I can come up with (in no particular order):
1.  Orphan Black - Absolutely worth watching.  A crime the actress wasn't just given an Emmy on the spot
2.  Defiance - Okay, nothing to write home about
3.  Warehouse 13 - Fun, but will be ending next year
4.  Falling Skies - Haven't watched it.  Just didn't really get interested past the pilot
5.  Doctor Who - New Who has had it's ups and downs, but it still a fun watch
6.  Under the Dome - It's not aliens and gadgets in space, but it is sci-fi.  So far, it's not too bad.
7.  Misfits - Next season's the last one.  Last season was a bit of a downturn, but otherwise worth checking out
8.  Continuum - First season was a bit too "standard police procedural", but it's picked up this year a lot
9.  Futurama - Okay, I'm grasping at straws here.  It may be animated, but it's still sci-fi
10.  Revolution - Only watched a couple episodes.  The plotting and characters right off the bad were terrible and predictable.

Well, there's ten at least.  There's got to be another one or two I'm forgetting, without having to go into horror (Walking Dead), fantasy (Game of Thrones), or anime.

I blame Exodus 34:29.

Cagey B: How are the current ratings compared to the time before this person's tenure? Does anyone actually know?

I'm sure the ratings have improved since then.  Originally, Sci-Fi was a very niche channel.  Between shows like MST3K and the look of things like FTL news and the channel ID's, it really felt like a cult channel.  Dammit, that's what viewers of Sci-Fi wanted: A network & website that seemed to actually "get" them.

Since then, it's moved more and more towards the "mainstream" by airing wrestling and reality programs like you would see on Spike.  I'm sure it gets more viewers than previously.  It's just a matter of being happy with a small, but devout following, or a large "couldn't really care one way or another" viewership.

MONSTER!!!

BTW, I really get the appealing of movies like Sharknado... I mean, I don't think that you can claim be a MST3K fan and NOT have a soft spot for those movies.

Bad monsters are a staple of the genre...

NicktheSmoker: Seriously, you really faced intolerance being Jewish?  Someone needs to learn when people are joking with them. What a moron.

Unless she ended up in the westernmost portion of Bumfark Kansas, I have a hard time believing her claim.  It pains me to defend the intelligence of Kansans, but I've never met a Kansan so insular that they would say something like that.  I don't know where she visited, but if it was Johnson County, Lawrence, or even Manhattan, they've seen Jews before.

I suspect that in reality, the New York kids were getting some chuckles at the expense of the "rubes" and the rubes decided to poke back.

Hipster Alert:  I actively stayed away from Sharknado for that very reason.  It's one thing to pass off bad Roger Corman movies as sci-fi, but Sharknado was a bridge too far for me.

Saiga410: johnnieconnie: So why doesn't she throw some of the love from the USA channel over to the SciFi channel?

/sheds tear for Warehouse, Eureka, Farscape, etc

Wait when did Warehouse get the ax?  AWWWWW sonofa.

Earlier this year they announced that they were going to finish up this season and then end the series with a half a season next year. That show was the last reason I watch the syfylis channel ever. Lost Girl and Continuum I can get from torrents the day before they air on syfylis since they're actually Canadian shows.

Trocadero: EyeballKid: But those who are involved with Characters Unite are optimistic that its message will become universal.

If there's anybody I'd expect optimism from, it's anybody who thinks people are watching USA original programming.

I like White Collar.

And Psych is still good.

But they don't exactly have anything to replace Psych with as their good show when it ends next year, and Bonnie is Siffying USA by adding hours of reality programming to the schedule instead of good shows.

It's okay.  Bonnie Hammer is so evil she falls under the Time Police Hitler Protection Act, so we all know it's just a wistful dream.

/Did I just Godwin a thread about a SyFy channel exec defending against antisemitism?  I think I did.

Growing up in a Jewish family in New York, NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment chairman Bonnie Hammer never had issues with prejudice -- until she took a college trip to Kansas.

Yeah, well that was your first mistake.
