I love me some Wendy's, that new pretzel burger is goooood. Unfortunately their prices are on the high end of fast food, a meal for 2 there now costs almost as much as I would pay at Chili's. Same goes for Arby's too. At least the food tends to be higher quality than what I get at BK or McD's though, so it's worth it.

Wendy's has always been a bit upscale and better than the other fast food places. I mean in the 70s 80s 90s before I found out about In 'n Out and also 5 Guys.

So true! I haven't been to Wendy's since approximately April, but have gone three times this month for that pretzel burger. It's crazy though that it can cost about as much as Smashburger.

My take... there's a higher standard deviation between stores with Wendy's. Good ones... they're the best fast food chain. But, there are some ultra-ghetto Wendy's out there, some chaotic ones, and then the one where no one ever came to the counter (ended up leaving) while three Down's Syndrome adults in Wendy's shirts rode mops around the dining room like ponies.

McDonalds... you pretty much know what to expect anywhere.

Buy the burger, get my own potato to cook with soft drink, and I'm there.

Usually, when it's real busy is when the burger are the best, because they're making them fresh one after another and your burger is ready made, without fixings.

When I think of Wendy's, I think of soft white buns that yield under the pressure of my fingers and hot, fragrant juices running down my chin and dripping onto my chest.

My theory:

There's a direct inverse correlation between the financial healthiness of the company and the oversalting of their french fries.  Maybe it's because they want to sell more high-profit soda, or maybe it's just that salt is the cheapest way to add flavor to something.

Wendy's sea salted fries are one of the nastiest things I've ever eaten. And I once ate a big heaping bowl of salt.

Therefore, Wendy's has been in trouble for quite a while now.

I'll stick with Harvey's. Best milkshake you can get in Canada. (We don't have Steak n Shake or In & Out or whoever it is in the USA with good shakes.)

Here's a surprise for you. It's the same salt as before just not as finely ground. Other than the peel the "new" fries are eactly the same.

The GF and I had to stop by Wendy's this past weekend to get one of those. However, when we saw the price we said WTF and just bought one to split it. It was tasty enough for us to want another, but we just went to the store and bought the fixings to make our own. Made 4 for about the price of 1 of those things. Mmmmmmmmmm burgers.

I've always thought the variances between stores of the same chain are so high I've never given much credit to whether one chain is better than another. While wendy's isn't a stand-out in frequency, some of the stores have been memorable. As with you, I've known the staffed-entirely-by-mentally-disabled wendys (which would be fine with me if it didn't result in mistakes with the order all the time).

But, credit where credit's due, I've known more wendys that provide an oasis of cleanliness and quality in places where my expectations started out low. A 24 hour truckstop one near me now is tip-top, and a ghetto one near where I used to live was clearly one of the most positive influences on the area.

i didn't actually re-make the Wendy's burger, but we got fresh onion rolls from the bakery at the local mom and pop grocery which turned out to be awesome. Still though, 1.25 lbs of ground chuck + rolls = $6 at the store. Had cheese, romaine and other fixings in the fridge so minor cost saved there.

Wendy's was far and away the best of the big 3 before Dave Thomas died.  Then things went to hell as all 3 big fast food players plus Taco Bell started a race to the bottom with their dollar menus.  Everything became about price, nothing else mattered.  So they all started using grade 'H' meat and salting the hell out of everything because it tasted so much worse than it used to.  Fast food companies don't have the margins to serve good ingredients, except in rare cases in high end markets where folks like Burgerville can get away with charging $6 for a fast food burger.

^^^^^
THIS.

Wendy's used to have the best hamburgers of the 'big three,' but they've been going downhill for the better part of a decade now.  The end for me came when they made their latest round of changes - the hamburgers went from nice and juicy to dry, cardboard-like objects, and you could start tasting dirt on the lettuce.

Now when I'm jones'in, I go directly across the street - to Steak n' Shake.  Same price, and I can get it made exactly the way I want it made without holding up the drive-through line.

This is the polar opposite of my experience with those two chains.  SnS takes ages to get me a burger, and they often get it wrong.  I had the pretzel burger recently, and it was the best fast-food burger I've had in ages.  Although I would definitely hold off on the cheese sauce next time.  What's the point of that when you already have a slice of actual cheddar on the thing?

I guess it all comes down to who is running the joints in your region.

Maybe there is some way to harness outrage and funnel it toward Wendys to get them to change their fries. Convince the justice4trayvon and gender neutrality crowds that the new Wendys fries are the cause of everyone's problem.

The new Wendy's fries were awesome--for the first month. They obviously put a lot of thought and money into their rollout. After the first month, though, they went back to undercooking them in dirty oil an hour ahead of time. Now they're worse than the old mashed potato sticks--er, fries--plus they're oversalted. The VP of fries needs to be fired.

Aww, really? There was one near Fisherman's Wharf about 20 years ago (the only time I've visited SF). One of the most colorful I've seen too... mostly young Chinese folks working the counter, and my order went something like this:

"Welcome to Wendy's, may I take your order?"

"Two singles with cheese, fries, medium Coke."

"Okey". (turns to kitchen and erupts with the most furious burst of Asiatic language I've ever heard). "Five dollah thirty."
