You see a big difference in parenting style too.  "I'd whip him if I wouldn't go to prison for it" isn't what good parenting sounds like.  Bad parenting puts kids at a huge disadvantage.

Regardless of the parenting or the undoubtedly outrageous blackness of the black kid, you can't have a headline like that without including the "Dun dun" at the end.

It's just not done.

I remember the "hoodrat" kid, but IIRC that happened some years ago, around 2007-2008.

I agree.  The white kids parents came off as ineffectual to me, and far to forgiving.  To the kid a trip to NYC and being on today probably seemed like a reward for the activities.  A four day grounding is far too lenient for something like that.

The black kid did seem much more defiant, and certainly needs a major attitude adjustment.  The Grandmom's idea isn't a bad one, and why the heck should she worry about jail for spanking the kid (if he's under her care)?

Neither should face criminal charges - 7 years old isn't old enough to fully understand the implications of one's actions, but a hearty spanking followed by extra chores and no TV, game, or non-school related computer time for at least a month wouldn't be out of line.

The media is latently racist on pretty much every story, or buried stories, where race could be mentioned.

This is why the Zimmerman case gets blown out of proportion. "See everyone! We're not racist! We love black people and you love us back right!?"

Meanwhile small stories like this the media lets its guard down and shows how really racist they are by accident. And by they, I mean the white morons in media.

The white kid story is suspicious because he didn't hit any cars and put it in park before running off.  I think he might have been getting some early driving lessons.
The black kid wrecked the car, and hit a bunch of stuff.  Gotta be over $10k in damage.  The threshold for felony mischief is under $1k in a lot of places.  The white kid was just driving without a license.  The black kid is a felon!

The sad thing is that unless he's cured of his 'I want to do hoodrat things' mentality before he comes a teenager, he'll end up as an actual felon.

Of course the white kid, with parents who think the response to him stealing the family car for a joyride is 4 days without videogames and a trip to the city to be on TV, and with responses like he ran from the police because 'he wanted to' and he took the care just to see what it was like, is likely to end up a frat guy shoving bratwursts up pledges asses or dissecting neighborhood cats to see how they tick.

Both of these families should be ashamed to have given their kids permission to speak to the media, and both should have CPS followups to make sure that the home environment is suitable for raising an emotionally and socially mature child.

See, their different attitudes are why they are treated differently. As usual, the black kid is a complete asshole about it. He even admits "it's fun to do bad things" and
"Did you know you could kill somebody?"
"Yea, but I wanted to do hoodrat stuff with mah friend!"
He also did actual damage to other cars, and admits it was fun to hit the cars. What a fat POS. Let's see where he's at in another seven years.
Also, LOLOL at the white kid being a way better driver. I swear, Need For Speed helped me learn how to drive, so maybe the little white brat plays it too. He was at least able to fake being cute and "sorry."

It was like on the bike thief episode of "What Would You do?" - they tried to play it up as people doing different things based on skin color, but the white actor was just trying to steal the bike, while the black actor was all "It's not yours! It's not yours! Why do you care?!" until the one older white guy pretty much said "Fark you buddy, I'm callin' the cops!"

Yeah. I think the ship has already sailed on the whole "home environment ..." thing. On the bright side, in another ten years or so we'll get to make fun of these kids' mug shots on The Smoking Gun.

Did it say what state each boy was in?  I would bet that would make a lot of difference, that and one boy caused damage and it didn't say the other one did.  If either one were my kid (and I'm white) I'd beat their ass and they would at least think twice about doing it again.  With one it would be, "I'll beat the black off your ass" and with the other one it would "I'll beat your ass till it's red!"   Does that make me racist?

So one was practicing driving responsibly to get to his future job and the other one was practicing stealing vehicles as that will be his future job?

I would have been given a solid thrashing and grounded for a month with extra chores  and no pocket money if I had driven the family car with out permission regardless of my age.

When people go into a closed and locked store, take sneakers off the shelf, and then exit the store through a broken door or window without paying, that's looting.

When people are in the middle of a flooded street, and a loaf of bread floats by with no associated origin identification, and no reasonable ability to find the rightful owner, that's called finding.

Shut up, Kanye

Yes, because nothing says bad parenting like using punishment to extinguish criminal behavior. Gosh, I hope that trend doesn't catch on.

A good parent would buy him an ice cream cone for doing that.
