He does, every time. He proposes an economic policy to create jobs and increase the tax base. Then House Republicans wipe their ass with it and pis all over it.

So, we have that going for us, which is nice.

This time he's going to propose a plan that eliminates ALL government spending

/the knee-jerk Republican reaction against it will get food stamps, unemployment extensions, and a major infrastructure investment and jobs bill past the House before they even read it

Is he going to finally acknowledge that in order to fix the economy it can't be bipartisan and he has to do something about the Republicans blocking everything and trying their best to crash the entire country?

Meanwhile, the House will schedule another vote to repeal ObamaCare, and then they will work on defunding the entire government and ruining the credit rating of the United States.

I don't think they want to ban them. They just want to punish people for having them. Or admitting that they exist.

It bought higher GDP growth oh, and JOBS to people who pay taxes. Kinda wanna note the deficit is falling? I fail to figure what better investment your tiny mind could think of.

It sent a signal to our businesses and trade partners that we'd keep spending while everyone else was retracting.

Open a book or something.

Considering the "savings" is disproportionally impacting federal wages and their tax base? About 0%

2013-07-24 10:16:36 PM

NewportBarGuy: About 0%

So not spending has nothing to do with the deficit. . . I'm inclined not to believe your math. No offense, think you might be a little too partisan to parse this out rationally.

Well, I live in a town with a large Naval base and the Navy War College. I learned from my friend's wife that they put off buying a house because he now works 4 days per week, and they are cutting back on other things.

You tell me. Does that sound stimulative to you?

Large is wrong, used to be large. But we have a lot of government contractors and they are sure as f*ck not spending more money because of the cuts.

Save a dollar in government spending, lose 2 in consumer spending.

Of which how much is taxed? 20%? So gained 60 cents on the dollar in deficit reduction using your formula. Much different from a 0% effect as you claimed.

OK, so that dollar they were going to spend went to someone, who spends it on something else, who spends it on something else. That's kind of how an economy works.

When you just arbitrarily take money out of the economy, as sequestration does, you kill consumer spending. That's all you really kill. Consumer Spending is 75% of the US economy.

Not yacht purchases. Not missile boats. People buying food and gas and disposable electronics. That's what makes us tick. Cut that funding, and you will cut GDP.

NewportBarGuy: People buying food and gas and disposable electronics. That's what makes us tick. Cut that funding, and you will cut GDP.

A large number of people make their money in the private sector. And I'm pretty sure the government employees who had furlough days still bought food, and gas, probably electronics too. The ones I know did, they budgeted carefully, some dipped into savings with little regret due to the pathetically low interest rates, that sort of thing.

But you claimed a precise number, and I showed how that still resulted in sequester being a net deficit reduction. That was my point. It's not entirely responsible, the economy has rebounded slightly which is increasing revenues to an extent, but the budget cuts are having a noticeable impact.

Really, the best use of his time for the next year would be to pound non-stop on how important it is for every registered voter to get out and vote for anyone with a D after their name for the Senate or House in the upcoming midterms.  Realistically nothing else matters - until the Democrats can control the House and the Senate the GOP will continue to be obstructionist assholes and prevent any progress.

Just getting a simple majority in both houses of Congress will allow us to finally force through legislation to get things done and get the economy on the right track (not to mention hopefully initiate some major campaign and election reform including repealing Citizens United and regulating how congressional districts are drawn up to prevent gerrymandering and the disproportional amount of power the GOP has managed to wrangle despite being in the popular minority).

You don't pay much attention to politics, do you?  Let's just say that the Republicans may be the end boss, but the Democrats are still the ineffectual mid-boss  They're not suddenly going to do something that would endanger their corporate cash flow, or risk any "safe" sears.  BSABSVD, basically, because while one "side" is noticeably less awful for the people, it's still managing to be pretty awful.

There are some Democrats beholden to corporate interests, sure, but not nearly as badly as the GOP is infected.  Step one still needs to be to take the competition out of power, step two can be addressing the cancer within.  Once the Democrats have majorities in the Senate and House, Obama can use his leverage to make sure they vote the way they're needed to lest they suddenly lose support and endorsement from those that matter.

2013-07-25 12:58:34 AM
The first thing Obama needs to announce is that he firmly opposes using a ball-peen hammer to pound roofing nails up one's urethra.

It won't solve any problems, but the screams coming from the House GOP's caucus room will be hilarious.

He didn't say it was the only thing.

It most certainly is one of the things.

The S&P even called out Republicans, specifically, when they downgraded the US credit rating.

"We have changed our assumption on this because the majority of Republicans in Congress continue to resist any measure that would raise revenues, a position we believe Congress reinforced by passing the act."

There's only way to fix the economy, and pretty much everything else:

Tell the Republicans to fark off. Stop the inane "reaching across the aisle" coming to "bi-partisan consensus," etc.

Of course, this advice mirrors subby's headline.

Yeah, the Iraq War was a very poor ROI. Infrastructure would have created more jobs, created more opportunities for people at home, left us with something of value, and not killed and wounded huge numbers of soldiers.

Wait, are you talking about something else?

No doubt he was furious when the Republicans cut funds from the Food Stamps program - highest return of all the stimulus programs. Perhaps he can explain why they did that - I can't.

The branch of government with the most power is the legislative so if Congress doesn't want anything to get done, nothing will get done.

The Tea-tards don't want limited government. They want to watch everything burn to the ground. It's sad that our best hope lies in the Republicans who haven't gone full Teabagger, that maybe they'll find a sliver of real patriotism and start working with the Democrats to better our nation.

I know I shouldn't respond to trolls, but I'm bored and not sleepy enough yet.

Actual Deficit of 2009 budget (the last one submitted by GWB, and thus, his turd): $1.413 trillion

Actual Deficit of 2012 budget (the last one we have numbers for): $1.089 trillion

The budget had seen a roughly $350 billion dollar decrease before any sequestration.  We don't yet have actual numbers on the budget since sequestration started.  The sequestration's actual effect on the budget remains unseen.  Now, we have projections from the proposals, specifically a $901 billion deficit for this years budget, but those projections tend to be off a bit from the actual numbers.  We can't say anything about the sequester's actual effects yet.
