Other movies banned in New Zealand:

Mad Max (do they really hate Mel Gibson that much)
Hostel Part 2 (later released on DVD with offending material cut)
I Spit on Your Grave (2010 remake)
The Human Centipede 2

Books banned in New Zealand. Yes, all books must be approved by a Government censor officially known as "The Office for Film and Literature Classification"

Well I can't name them all but there's 1300 books banned according to this website
http://booksellers.co.nz/members/book-business-articles/information- ba nned-and-restricted-books

Video games banned in New Zealand. Yep, they also must be approved by "The Office for Film and Literature Classification" even though they aren't film or literature:

Manhunt
Manhunt 2
Postal
Reservoir Dogs

T-shirts banned in New Zealand (Yes, they even censor t-shirts there folks):
In 2007 one that advertised an album for Cradle of Filth, a British extreme metal band, was banned by Bill Hastings, the chief censor in New Zealand. According to Hastings, it was one of the most graphic t-shirts he had ever seen. The shirt displayed an image of a mostly nude Roman Catholic nun sexually pleasuring herself, along with the text "Jesus is a C*nt"

Reservoir Dogs the game but not the movie? I suppose that sort of makes sense, in the game you do the killing instead of just watching it. What about Grand Theft Auto?

Say what you want about the US, we have *general* freedom of speech and the ability to let our children kill hookers and deal drugs in video games.

Odd choice, You can pretty much watch/play anything and no-one here takes any notice of the censors/ratings anyway so I am surprised they still bother trying.

Walker: The Human Centipede 2

That movie wasn't very good.  It was just a stale rehash of the profundities so elegantly displayed in the first one.  The original had a certain... je ne sais quoi.  It was a profound statement on the nature of our lonely existence, a parable exploring the extremes of the conflict between Man vs. Man.  Or Woman vs. Woman vs. Man... but the point still stands.

WTF is wrong with Britain and their southern colonies?!  Canada used to be a colony too, and a very stodgy one who didn't even rebel (much) at that.  Yet we're not trying to censor the internet, ban pornography (especially any featuring small-breasted women, god forbid they can pay their rent too), or install police cameras in everyone's front garden.  Australia was settled by thieves, murderers, prostitutes, and political radicals.  Now even they're a bunch of pearl-clutching Maude Flanderses.

I really dig the original "Maniac." The dvd has a bio on Joe Spinell that really adds some context to the film and its star/co-screenwriter.

Double plus: a slasher flick with a sawed off shotgun kill + Tom Savini effects.

While Woods did a great job as a (dialogue free) psychopath in Sin City, I still haven't watched the Maniac remake.

Has the price of pearls gone up in NZ, with the clutching and all?

This is pretty misleading, as you might expect from someone pontificating from America, and just looking at labels like censor.

Books do not have to be "approved", but can be banned if they deal with weapons and drug manufacture and other criminal acts, dog fighting and the sexual exploitation of children and young persons. I think you'll find there's a fair bit of control over those sort of publications in most countries.

Films and video games have age-based ratings, as they do in many countries

If you look for a citation for the banned tshirt, you get one story  (google images "Cradle of Filth tshirt banned" to see what objecting to) and given that it's language that you're not allowed to use on Fark, it's a bit OTT to make it seem commonplace.

No that movie was horrible and I don't mind spoiling it so no one else wastes their time watching it: a fat mute antisocial loser watches the original "Human Centipede" which in this movie is really a DVD horror movie. Then this mute who's abused by his mother goes around kidnapping multiple people to make a long human centipede. But the whole movie is just boring. When people talk about this or that movie being the worst movie ever, I wonder if they've ever seen Human Centipede 2, because this has to be among the worst movies ever made. It's just a dumb film and not in a cult movie way either.

I thought that the first was just another exploitating flick with a scat angle.

The second, however, had an Eraserhead vibe/influence that, at the least, tried to go meta.

I actually dig the relationship that exists between the two flicks and think that the second, in all of its vilenesss, trumps the first and completely changes it in retrospect.

The article didn't go into Australia's reactions. I'm pretty sure New Zealand is a separate country. One where everything isn't trying to kill you.

Walker: Books banned in New Zealand. Yes, all books must be approved by a Government censor officially known as "The Office for Film and Literature Classification"

I'm sure all New Zealanders are gutted that we can't read such awesome literary masterpieces as "Raped Daughter, Then Mother", "Secrets of Methamphetamine Manufacture 8th Edition", "A Guy With Tits", "My Daughter, My Love", "Secret Love: Erotic Love Between Boys and Men", and "A Practical Guide to Growing Poppies and Making Opium".

The horror.  I am bereft of quality child porn and informative guides to manufacturing illegal drugs.  What shall I do for bedtime reading material now?

And no, all books DO NOT have to be approved by a government censor.  Don't be such an American.  You could... I don't know... read the website.

Under section 3, a publication may be restricted or banned if it 'describes, depicts, expresses, or otherwise deals with' matters such as sex, horror, crime, cruelty, or violence. If a publication is restricted or banned, this means that it is likely to be harmful to society if made freely available. Publications which promote or support, or tend to promote or support certain activities, such as the sexual exploitation of children, must be banned.

Under sections 3A and 3B, the Classification Office can also impose an age restriction on a publication containing highly offensive language, self-harm, degrading or demeaning conduct, or conduct that would be dangerous if imitated.

The Act does not regulate political speech, the expression of opinions, or 'hate speech'.

1. I saw the remake of Maniac. It was a pretty good movie, and respectful to the original film (I'm a Joe Spinell fan.).  And maybe I'm just jaded, but I didn't think it was really that bad, gore wise. I wouldn't really put it in the "torture porn" genre. Aside from a few giggles at the very beginning, Wood's character doesn't really seem to take much pleasure in killing.

2. I wonder what it was about Hostel 2 that was so offensive but not present in Hostel 1.

3. I had nearly forgotten about the Reservoir Dogs videogame. The training level was tough, but kind of fun once you figured out how to do it. Unfortunately a level or two later I had killed everyone, but could not find the trigger switch to end the level. I remember running around for ten minutes, trying to get out, before just having to bail.

I hate to break it to you but American has been doing the same crappy stuff but just in just slightly different ways.

Every year some law maker tries to censor the internet (and is as successful as they have been in Britain), then theirs trying to ban porn by the back door via regulations (like the proof of age regulations and condom use), successfully managing to remove music with swearing from mainstream stores (thanks to Tipper Gore), banning any aid money to groups that promote abortion as an option, spying on its citizens, using international law enforcement agreements to punish people who might help copyright infringement (Kim Dotcom), arresting people who run gambling websites when they take a flight that has a stopover in the US.

But don't let facts get in the way of some good old fashioned xenophobia.

They've already tried to censor their internet.
