Kurt Cobain is alive and sharing a house with Tupac in the Rocky Mountains of rural Colorado.

I'm sure Kurt could do a bang up job.

If Kurt is unable, the student plans to solicit John Lennon, Jim Morrison, or, if all else fails, Elliot Smith.

He also asked Andy Kaufman to perform at the half time show

It's weird who people don't know are dead. People are shocked that Mitch Hedberg is dead all the bloody time. It's also just trippy that the 90s was long enough ago kids may now be hearing Nirvana's music and not learning of Cobain's death, just because it's such an assumptive bit of knowledge that no one overtly expresses it anymore.

I was a college-radio DJ when this album came out in 1985, and I remember reading stories in CMJ about clueless program directors calling Verve Records asking for info about this new band.

When I was in the third grade I tried writing to J.R.R. Tolkien to tell him I liked The Hobbit.

Not really that misguided considering there's no mention of Cobain and Paul McCartney played as lead in a reunited Nirvana.

Sure, Kurt's just dying to do this.

I was so moved by The Marriage of Figaro the first time I heard it, I wrote to Wolfgang Puck thanking him for such a masterpiece and wondered why he stopped composing and became a chef.

FFS, everyone knows he's with Jimmy and Elvis, and they play in an Englebert Humperdink cover band that tours the Mongolian steppe.

Come on, Subby. Give Sub Pop the clicks.

Fail for TFA as well. The link in its first sentence shows the letter, with no reference to Kurt. If anything, it sounds like some idiot doesn't know the difference between Rihanna and Nirvana.

Let's not forget here that we've hit the point where well about half of (undergrad) college students were never alive at the same time as Kurt Cobain...

I went as Cobain for Halloween recently (complete with a gunshot wound), and no one under 30 had any clue what I was doing.

I was wondering why the letter referred to Nirvana as "her" at one point -- this seems likely.

Speaking of gender confusion, the Tumblr post says the sender is running for Homecoming queen, so unless Virginia Tech is far more liberal than we know, subby is wrong to assume the sender is a "he".

That's just silly. He's not on SubPop anymore. You have to write Geffen.

Nirvana is classic rock.

I can't tell you how many 25-30 y.o. I know that are fans.  My 27 y.o. g/f included, and Nevermind came out when she was 5 1/2.

When I was 5ish, these were big.

Yikes.

Well, it says homecoming candidate so not necessarily female.  Also, how old is the letter?  Do schools select homecoming candidates BEFORE students arrive for the fall semester?

This. There are a lot of people that were famous in the 60s that I just assume are dead because I haven't heard anything about them in years. Realistically they shouldn't be any older than my parents, who are just fine.

I'm guessing they sent the same letter to multiple bands/artists and simply forgot to change it. later in the letter it states "Let me know if they would be interested"

A friend and i were talking one day, and we had both convinced ourselves that Tom Snyder was dead.

About a month later, the news came out that he had died.

Dude, we KILLED Tom Snyder!

We kind of blamed ourselves.

If you follow the link in TFA, you'll see an actual image of the letter:

Um.  Hello...(sad pause)... Virginia Tech.  (more sad pause) You don't want to walk around.  You don't even want to breathe.  You live in a Southern Town where all you can do is grit your teeth! (*blast*)

10 years ago for that guy.  I was kind of surprised.

If you'll note by my reply I already read the letter, there is no reference to Homecoming Queen.
As for the stationary, it's not something that I would purchase, but I make no gender assumptions based on it.

Ah, but did you read the accompanying blog post? It clearly states "Homecoming queen" and refers to the sender as "she".  Presumably they saw the letter without the crossed out names.

Her letter never mentioned Cobain.  I'll give her the benefit of the doubt and assume she meant the other members.

The actual blog post says that they dressed up and obliged the request. I hope they post that video.
