Why does everyone pray for their cancer to be cured?  Shouldn't they be ecstatic that Jesus is calling them home sooner than expected?

My wife was struck with breast cancer few weeks ago, she's only 31 years old. We actually joined a support group for victims of breast cancer and there is a shocking amount of 20-30 yr olds. It doesn't target only black women it targets everyone.

Let's just get this out of the way: it's not such a racial thing as it's a poor thing.

Poor people are sicker and die more often than rich people.

Since blacks tend to be poorer, you can spin this as racial. But if you really want to fix the problem, you need to be focused on economic policy, not racial policy.

THIS

A single payer system for all basic preventative and emergency care would improve public health in every measurable way. If someone needs some kind of premium plan for fancy healthcare, (like private rooms, seeing specialists without referrals, etc.) then they can pay for a private plan to add these features to the basic care that everyone would get with single payer.

Obamacare is just private healthcare companies' collective wet dream.

It would improve healthcare in almost every way.

It also will bankrupt out country.

There are no easy solutions to this problem.

Or just solve the genetic issues the people have because if you knew anything about breast cancer you would realize that a huge portion of the people who get it have the BRAC1&2 genes that predispose you to the cancer. Of course we can't actually use that because it wont get folks all pissed off our be able to be used as a source of indignation.

Philosophically, sure. In real life, lawsuits will result in massive bloating of the programs to include everything and its kid brother, which simply isn't tenable. This isn't speculation, this is history (TennCare and its unbelievable bloating). Hell, it happens with private insurance often enough as it is.

it's a cultural issue, not a technical one; in other nations without such litigation from the overly-entitled, it works fine.

Oversimplification at work.  Terribly unsciency article.

All breast cancers aren't treated equal.  If you're lucky, you have a cancer with receptors to estrogen, progesterone, or even both.  If not, you may be fortunate enough to have Her2 receptor.  These can be targeted with drugs (different ones, based on what receptor is present) that hit these receptors.  Then there's the unlucky ones who have none of these ("triple negative") that subsequently have a poor prognosis.  These people, unfortunately, are way more likely to be African-American women.  Is this the only thing at play? Absolutely not.  But to ignore this takes away from this article that's going to be used as a soundbite.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19320967

"Black women of diverse background have 3-fold more Tneg tumours than non-black women, regardless of age and BMI. Other factors must determine tumour subtype. The higher prevalence of Tneg tumours in black women in all age and weight categories likely contributes to black women's unfavorable breast cancer prognosis."

Just one study for citation purposes...it's been established enough to make into our medical basic sciences courses.

Pretty much everyone?  Medicaid covers it better than most private insurances.  Despite what some people want you to believe, the problem isn't access.  It's utilization.

If you actually read the article, they are accounting for socio-economic status and type of cancer.

A cultural distrust of doctors seems to be playing a significant part in the problem in the form of lack of early screening and possibly choosing doctors they trust over specialists(which results in poor treatment choices)

For every dollar we spend for health care, 31% goes to the administrative overhead costs of private insurance. As of 2010, 16.3% of Americans are uninsured. If everyone paid the EXACT amount they currently contribute to healthcare, but we switched to a single non-profit payer system, we could literally cover 100% of Americans AND save money without ANYONE contributing more than they already contribute. That even means people who contribute nothing wouldn't even have to contribute a nickel and they could still be covered without raising anyone else's premiums. Medicare has an overhead of only 10.1%. So that's roughly 21% margin between the two programs, which would easily cover the 16% of uninsured Americans with high quality care.

You and your wife have my sympathies but your post is either a great example of not reading the article or of white people hearing what the hell they want to hear when it comes to anything to do with black people versus what was actually said.

The gist is that black women have poorer outcomes. Usually due to less access to adequate healthcare and yes, racism, because their issues with health aren't taken seriously. Because they're black.

Please understand that noticing these discrepancies doesn't take away from white women in general or your wife in particular

I didn't post clearly, I was speaking as "Cancer" does not target anyone specifically.  As for black people, income doesn't matter when welfare and medicare takes care of that. I for example own a business (rental property) I make less than 25,000 but greater then 150,000 in assists, which means I either should of had insurance which I cannot afford (yes I am paying my wifes cancer bills in cash) and I cannot apply for medicaid or medicare. There is no excuse they cannot get checked up once every 6 months, its a free service (look locally).

I don't believe race plays an issue, its simply low income have a much tougher time navigating the healthcare BS thats "free". My wife came here on her visa and isn't a citizen, has no insurance no job no assists. She's been in chemo for 3 months with stage 4 breast cancer.

As the article describes ""We know what the solutions are. Our initiatives are geared to early detection." Black women often fear a cancer diagnosis, and are afraid that they are doomed to die anyway, she said.

Both me and my wife do our yearly checks, failure to get a medical checkup is same as not checking water in your car, its bound to hick up sometime.

I saw the results of a study that followed women in an all black breast cancer support group in Alabama and was appalled. Evidently it is a common belief down south that breast cancer is due to something you did that was morally wrong. They preferred to go to doctors that had moved there from Northern states as they were treated like human beings. They had to arrange conferences between priests and doctors so that the priest could learn that the cancer wasn't their fault, and stop preaching against them.
