It is a shame that an honored member of the Royal Shakespeare Company is remembered solely for that character.

DanZero: The Saturday Morning show was great too

Found the complete series in the $1 bin at a store here in town.  Brought it home and the boys loved it.  I remembered watching it back when it came on and, yeah, it's still weird as hell.

It's not shameful, but it is too bad that Varney is remembered as a one-trick pony.

Yep. My daddy used to have a full-ride Jim Varney acting scholarship.

I love the Ernest movies. Just goofy fun.

The Ernest character I can leave, but all I've heard about Jim Varney was that he was one of the nicest people who was in show business at the time, and he left the world too soon. His Jed Clampett in the "Beverly Hilbillies" reboot was spot-on.

Agreed - by all accounts I've seen, he was a genuine, down-to-earth nice guy.

And, growing up on the Hillbillies, I thought he did a great Uncle Jed.
Actually, everyone did a pretty good takeoff on the original cast.

I feel worse for the guy who played the Sheriff on the Dukes of Hazzard as he had had a pretty good career in doing Shakespeare and theater before that.

I see we all read the same Cracked lists.

My first stepfather was friends with Jim and we had dinner at his house a few times.  The toasts were always epic Shakespeare.

He was brilliant.

I first saw Jim Varney on the television on Guam while my father was stationed there back in the early 80's.  He was doing a car commercial for some dealer in Dededo, they even lip synced "Dededo" into his script, so i though he was a Guam local & though nothing of it.
Upon returning to the States, i finally saw him & his Ernest character & though wow, he must be popular to have made it from Guam and onto the tele here too!
It's always funny to me to remember back when i was a kid and attempting to piece together reality from the few facts i gathered in my brain along the way.

All they wanted was a hero, all he needed was a friend.

So you have to want to be an actor but major in something else.

That might have been an incredibly smart move on his part.

He was also an outstanding standup comic with some REALLY racy material.

CSB. My BiL is named Vern. College pysch prof. Had KWIMV as his license plate. Offered bonus points on final for anyone who knew what those letters stood for.

He would have made a great Richard III.
