Sounds like most of that is UK taxes. Something tells me that no matter how much tax reform happens in the state of CA, it won't affect the UK tax rate.

2013-07-24 09:56:20 AM
You didn't earn that. It's not yours to keep.

That poor poor man.

2013-07-24 10:21:18 AM
I guess he'll have to subsist on the $49 million he's made so far this year from endorsements and Enbrel commercials.

I don't begrudge him any of that, he seems like a genuinely nice guy, but I love how this is all of a sudden a complete outrage, and how people who would normally call "certain" professional athletes overpaid thugs who play a child's game, or stupid Hollyweird actors who get $10 million dollars a movie, are now acting like $2.5 million is totally commensurate for a weekend's work.

How could he possibly survive on a one time payout of $842,000? Why bother getting out of bed in the morning if you can't earn $1 million in a day?

2013-07-24 10:44:32 AM
If he wanted to take home more than $850,000 for four days of work, he should have worked harder at a more lucrative career.

I ask myself that same question every damned morning

Meh, I think I'd be pissed too if I was paying 61% of my income to taxes.

basemetal: Meh, I think I'd be pissed too if I was paying 61% of my income to taxes.

I would be too, but that's not really my point (not that you were claiming it was). I agree that it's a crazy tax rate.

But what I find hilarious is how this is just now an outrage. It's not an outrage when, say, some dirt poor Mexican kid from south central LA put his life on the line in the boxing ring for a title purse in the UK, but when it happens to some rich white guy from La Jolla, its an injustice that makes national headlines.

Would you be pissed if I told you that by paying 61% in income taxes, you'd get ~$850k for a single day's work? And if you refused, you'd be stuck clearing ~$40k at a ~15% rate?

You'd be an idiot not to take the former choice.

// also, couldn't he deduct taxes paid to the UK on his US taxes or vice-versa?
// also, don't rich people have all kinds of havens and dodges for paying that full rate? Is Lefty not being smart about his tax avoidance schemes?

Well, of course he takes large chunks of what he earned after taxes and invests it in stocks and only pays 15% on those earnings.

Dude, you are completely missing the point.  It was four days of work, not one day.  That means it's completely different from what you said, and you're wrong forever about everything SO THERE.

I'll take the 20th place finisher's pay out after taxes and cock punch the person of the Country Clubs choosing, and still be very pleased.

The line about "and doesn't even take into account his expenses for the trip, his payout to caddie Jim "Bones" Mackay, or any endorsement income" is idiotic, because as a self-employed man, those expenses will be tax deductible.  So "Bones" may pay income tax on that bit of the cash, but Phil won't.  Similarly, for his expenses.

And the pro-rata'd UK tax paid on his endorsement income earned while golfing in the UK is unrelated to his victory, so its wrong to express that as a "percentage of his winnings." He'd have been obliged to pay that if even if he'd missed the cut in both tournaments.   If you're being paid to advertise your sponsors by playing golf in the UK, the UK Govt consider that to be taxable income.

6 people tied for 15th place so split the combined 15th-20th place prizes resulting in a payout of $95,043.
5 people tied for 21st place so split the combined 21st-25th place prizes resulting in a payout of $72,218.

yeh, what a shame, I'm sure he'll struggle to get by on what is nearly 16 years worth of median household gross income in the USA.  Oh, and the ~50M+ he already made this year alone.  And all the M's before that.  And all the M's that will come after this.

Woe is me...

Uh, you know you only pay that higher tax rate on the money you earn beyond the base for that bracket, right? I.e., you would still earn more money?

I bet he gets on his quad-four and totally rips up the course after the TV cameras have left. Just to show everyone who's boss.

For masterfully hitting a golf ball 66 times on Sunday, he won a measly $842,000 after taxes.

That's only $12,757 per hit. It's a sad, sad day indeed when a man can't get paid $33,000 to hit a golf ball.

Case in point that people will still work in order to earn money despite high taxes. The job creator argument always says people won't but obviously they will.

I'd like to point out that Mickelson isn't actually doing any complaining here. Some other accounting asshat decided to figure out what his taxes on his winnings would be, and then publish it in Forbes as if it were important -- or implying that Mickelson would do anything but just pay it and move on.

Err... I mean.... THANKS OBAMA!!

Or, he was asked a question and answered it frankly.  Admittedly, his answer was tone deaf, which is probably why he apologized for making it a public issue a few days later.

Now here we are, 7 months later.

Yes, because very "clever" members of the media feel the need to reprise a conversation that wasn't even all that interesting when it took place originally.

Hopefully with that winnings, Phil Mickelson will finally be able to afford a hat that has a top to cover his head.

Everything is Obama's fault -- although this happened in Europe, so maybe --- yes, I think....

SARKOZY!!!

Tour winnings are what, 10 percent of his total income? Maybe 12? The extra monies in endorsements will make up for the ridiculous tax rates 30 or 40 times over.

I'm sure Phil is so angry, crying into his already huge pile of money, banging his hot, sweet trophy wife and playing with his lovely children.
