Come on dude, couldn't you have kept it in your pants after the first scandal?  I realize this isn't recent, but he has to know his opponents are going to try to string him up for this.  It's a shame he did it and that it came out, he would've been a good mayor.

He should take a lesson from NY's former blind governor Patterson. When confronted with his own personal sex scandal, he replied, "YES. YES I DID. And I'd do it again. So there. We done with this now? Good. Now STFU and GBTW." (paraphrased slightly)

He kinda sucked as governor and was not successful in the next election, but his was the sex scandal response that I have admired the most.

Looking at it another way... HE was also a willing participant, 25 years older than this 22 year old woman, and had already resigned from congress in shame after doing the same goddamn thing before and pretending to make amends to his wife, and pretending to learn from the experience.

And a smear suggests an unsubstantiated charge. This is not a smear, this is a factual disclosure of some scummy guy continuing to be scummy while pretending to have reformed and vying for a position of power over many people.

Not really.  He basically said, "hey, I told you guys more stories might come out, and here's one of them."

I don't necessarily believe this. Weiner made a lot of powerful enemies by going after Wall St. I wouldn't be surprised if this alleged information was leaked at the exact time Weiner was surging ahead in the mayoral polls. Don't forget who stands to gain the most by seeing him lose. He was a very popular politician in NYC before the scandal and a lot of New Yorkers remember the good things he did as a congressman and before that an assemblyman. That being said I hope this isn't true and he learned his lesson and kept it in his pants.

I'm usually not a fan of witchhunts based on a person's private life, but this is a special case.  He already went through hell once and didn't have the sense or the self control to stop himself from doing it again a year later, or at least doing it more discreetly.

Making the same exact mistake twice shows poor judgment.

I'm a big supporter of Weiner, and thought he was a great congressman, and would vote for him if I lived in NYC, but even I agree with these statements.  He never stopped.  That's what this article is basically saying.  If what this girl said is true, this is kind of like the celebrities that go to "rehab" and then are seen drunk at a bar 2 weeks later.

Funk Brothers: Anthony Weiner needs help and counseling to overcome this sex addiction and regain marital trust from his current wife. He shouldn't be running for mayor of New York City.

I don't believe in sex addiction....the same part of the brain that says we need sex also tells us to breathe air and drink water.  With addiction to substances such as alcohol or cocaine, that same "survival" part of the brain starts to think that the substance of abuse is just as crucial to survival as oxygen or water.  On the other hand, the healthy, non-addicted brain already is supposed to think sex is necessary.

That being said, I think he needs some type of counseling, because clearly he can't stop this behavior even in light of massive and very public (and private) consequences.  So with a lot on the line, and him being bright enough to appreciate the consequences of continued behavior...well that just indicates psychological problems.

Given Weiner's track record versus Bloomberg, I'm more willing to have Weiner as mayor than Bloomberg.

ambassador_ahab: mongbiohazard: Original scandal and resignation from congress: May - June of 2011
This: August of last year

So yeah, he pretty much just never stopped.

They make the teary-eyed confession or whatever in front of the cameras, promise to change their ways, blah blah, and then go right back to what they were doing before.

Yep. It's just pure, unchecked arrogance.

Personally I think we make too big a deal about sex scandals in general, but I don't even think this is a sex scandal really. This is a guy who already pretty much had his political career ended, and no doubt caused a big rift in his marriage. He made tearful apologies to the public and to his wife, promised to make himself better, and was trying to get a second chance from the public and a new powerful job in elected office....... while simultaneously doing the exact same thing all along that caused him trouble in the first place. It's not like he slipped one night and sexted this chick by accident. And I think we'd all have to be pretty damn naive to think that this is the only chick he's done this with since the original scandal, and that there are none since this one either.

To me this is a clear sign of a guy who just thinks he's so personally special that no rules apply to him like they do other people - that he's better than other people just because he's him. That's the exact opposite of someone who should hold elected office - or even be in charge of any other people ever. I don't want him as my office manager, nevermind my mayor or congressperson.

I don't care if he goes to hot gay-sex orgies every night.  The issue is about dishonesty in my mind.  If he's going to claim he's in a monogamous relationship, then he can't also go doing all this stuff.

Likewise, if he's going to claim he's done with all this crap, then he shouldn't then keep doing it and then run for office.

Personally, the first time I could forgive pretty easily - he never touched any of them, it was all fantasy. It crossed the line, especially for a public figure, but morally I don't think it was any worse than a married guy calling a phone sex line or visiting a strip club.

After begging for forgiveness and then going right back and doing it again though, it's a lot harder to get over this time.  If having dirty talk sessions and sending risque photos back and forth with women he meets is that important to him, he needs to just file for divorce and become a single guy so that he can go ahead and do that.  I wouldn't have trouble trusting a single guy that was sexually active and involved in sexting, but since he's married, it does come off as if he has trouble keeping his promises.

Articles like this are why I really hate HuffPo anymore. They quote a porn site that calls Weiner a "sex predator" like he's a criminal or stalking someone under age. She was 22 and they were in a consensual relationship. Was it built on a lie? Yes. Was Weiner a dick for lying to her and having an affair? Yes. Does this make him a sexual predator?

If it does, I have a long list of other names to offer up to the sex offender's registry.

This is (IMO) no different that an athelete busted for pot who knows if he gets busted again he will lose millions of dollars. If you can't say to yourself "ya know. Your piece of pork, your wife's best friend

You can slip it in your sock
But don't take it out in public
Or they will stick you in the dock
And you won't come back

There have never been any inappropriate exchanges between Anthony Weiner and myself, including the tweet/picture in question, which had apparently been deleted before it reached me. I cannot answer the questions that I do not have the answers to. I am not sure whether or not this letter will alleviate any future harassment. I read a book about that. People don't realize that sociopaths have many of the characteristics of those who hold lofty positions, CEOs, politicians etc. The most utilized one is the lack of conscience. I'll try to remember the name of the book.

I think it all depends on his wife.  If she leaves him over this he's sunk.  I don't think she will, though.  She's got political ambitions and having your husband as the mayor of New York is a nice feather in your cap.  She's going to go the Hillary route.

ongbok: I read that as her saying he never sent her anything inappropriate, which is what she said.

Yeah, never until the dick pic.

Ms. Cordova, who had traded messages with Mr. Weiner, a New York Democrat, about their shared concern over his conservative critics, said she had never sent him anything provocative. Asked if she was taken aback by his decision to send the photo, she responded, "Oh gosh, yes."

That sounds very unsolicited to me.

Mr. Weiner, at his news conference on Monday, said he had sent Ms. Cordova the underwear photo "as part of a joke." But Ms. Cordova said the image was not in keeping with the tenor of their previous interactions.

"I still didn't get the joke part of it," she said.

Yes.  Now go read the NY Times article I linked to where he admits sending her a picture of his dick and that she was "taken aback" by it and explain to me how that means the picture was "solicited and consensual".

The picture (of Weiner in his underwear, not a picture of his dick) was deleted almost instantly, and the woman only found out about it from other people who she claimed had been "harassing" her for some time. Weiner, for his part, realized that he'd made a mistake and did everything a person could reasonably be expected to do to undo it.

You're conflating the fact that the photo was traced back to Weiner with a separate claim about him engaging in "unsolicited" or "non-consensual" stuff. Certainly, no reasonable person would use these terms to describe something somebody did by mistake and in fact tried to correct. If you absolutely must go after people for sending her "unsolicited" content, you should focus on the other people who spammed her twitter feed after the news went public.

"Last Friday night, I tweeted a photograph of myself that I intended to send as a direct message as part of a joke to a woman in Seattle. Once I realized I had posted it to Twitter, I panicked, I took it down, and said that I had been hacked." -Anthony Weiner

His mistake was that he tweeted it instead of sending it to her as a direct message, but he certainly did mean to send her (wait for it) an unsolicited and nonconsensual picture of his dick ok fine it was his engorged dick in some briefs.  For it to be solicited, she would have had to ask him to send it, right?  Where is the evidence that happened?

To be fair, I'm not familiar with Wiener's record as a politician.  I only heard of this guy because of his first sexting scandal.  With that being said, seriously, how can a guy that repeatedly engages in behavior this reckless, even after getting caught, ever be a good mayor?

I know plenty of people that excel professionally but have messy personal lives, but in Wiener's case, his personal life directly affects his professional one, and yet, he changed nothing.  He didn't even seem to try harder not to get caught this time.

Which is a terrible thought.

Eh, she seems like she could be alright, but IIRC she's been very buddy-buddy with Bloomberg, and it would be a shame if she continued some of his escapades into nanny-state-ism.  Banning large sodas and trying to legislate trans-fat and salt content of restaurant and street food is the kind of stuff that gives progressives a bad name.

She voted to allow bloomie to run for a third term, when 89% of NY'ers wanted a public referendum on it.

Back door politics, she should never serve in a public capacity again.

Neither should: the 27 other council members who voted for it, and that's double for them, because all of them prior to changing the law, voted to not allow it to a public referendum.

Sickening, and if it were earlier times, people like this would be tried for treason.

First, let's acknowledge we're no longer talking about what Weiner actually did, but the hypothetical scenario of what he intended to do instead. In real life, what we know is that the picture was posted, taken down, and then not sent at all (or maybe it was sent again in a private message and the lady's just been keeping quiet about it all this time).

I don't know the full details about what she and Weiner had been talking about leading up him posting that picture, so I can't really answer your question about "evidence". What I can tell you is that the purported victim in your scenario hasn't even once (as far as I can see) complained about the things that you've been complaining about on her behalf. She says she's disappointed in him, but then again, so were most of his supporters. She also says that it's ultimately an issue between Weiner and his family, and it would be a bit silly to overrule her on that point.

1st of all, does this even hurt his chances of becoming mayor of NYC?
2nd, weinerman said more stories are going to come out.  Was Carlos Danger a text series (Graphic Text Novel?)  that occurred before the previous scandal and are only now coming to light?
3rd. I know he's a democrat, which at the very least gives him a 40-50 IQ point advantage over republicans, and it's well-known what I think of republicans, but, I have to ask, are politicians in general this rock solid stupid?  If so, I really need to adjust my baseline perception.

This isn't about sex.  This is about the character of a man who lies.

Delawheredad:   So what do you make of his attempted bribe of his internet hottie by offering her a condo in Chicago? Even if the sex isn't an issue isn't the fact that was willing to engage in illegality to secure her silence mean anything?

He has bad character and he lies to and attempts to bribe constituents. Do you STILL feel we should just accept it and move on? If attempted bribery doesn't disqualify you for office what does?

I agree, the lying bothers me much more, same as with Clinton, but at the same time I have some sympathy for why they felt they needed to lie about this. I have a strong belief in not selling out my politics for anything, but if some girl threatened to ruin my career with gossip unless I gave her something and denied it? That would be a harder decision, and a separate one. I also think it's naive to believe a good portion of congress hasn't done the same or far worse.

Either way, I think the problem partially gets solved if we, as a society, stop caring so much about what people do with their genitalia.

I don't care what my elected officials do...so long as I never hear about it.  The moment their shiat becomes public, it has become obvious that they can't deal with their shiat anymore.  If they can't deal with their own shiat, they can't deal with my shiat and I want them gone.  God god man, try and keep your pants on in pictures.

I'm not sure how having your husband flit around on the internet with women 15 years your junior right after you've had his baby counts as a sensual pleasure, but you seem to be an expert.  Maybe you can write a book about how to spin low self-esteem.

So my question is - why did the girl suddenly go public with this?  She has to have seen from the experiences of previous women to admit sexual shenanigans with political figures that the media and much of society isn't going to be particularly kind to her, and a relatively minor role like this isn't going to springboard her into fame and sex column jobs.

Maybe she was behind on her rent and needed the advance from whoever she sold the story to, but you'd have to think Weiner would have been willing to pay at least that much to keep it hush hush.

I'm just confused.

She's still anonymous, so it's probably working out well for her so far.

Also, that Spitzer chick made some coin.

The Spitzer chick brought down a sitting Governor and had a much juicier story with a lot more dirt.

If you are a public figure of some sort, you really can't just go online and get nekid. Without being found out anyways. At the very least, he should be getting it on with girls in relatively obscure countries who don't really care about NY politics.

Frankly, I think anytime his name comes up from now on the filter should just change it to "Anthony Weiner's Genitals." After all, the only thing really running for office there is his cock and balls.

I have zero problems with sexting, and for all we know, he and Huma are swingers or something, or she's totally cool with him jerking off with internet strangers.  I don't know.  Or care!

Here's where this is actually a problem: Weiner's judgment was atrocious the first time (after revealing the sexting *himself*, then lying and making Breitbart the victim... as if that guy needed the actual evidence of a liberal conspiracy.) And obviously, he hasn't learned from the first awful scandal that made him the laughingstock of, at the very least, half a billion people.  He farked up before, and, knowing this, decided to just keep doing the same things and run for office again.  I'd say he had huge balls, but I've seen the cock shots, so... no.  He's a dumbass with ludicrously awful judgment.

TuteTibiImperes: Come on dude, couldn't you have kept it in your pants after the first scandal?  I realize this isn't recent, but he has to know his opponents are going to try to string him up for this.  It's a shame he did it and that it came out, he would've been a good mayor.

Not recent - like less than a year ago?

This precisely.  It has fark-all to do with the "what".  It has everything to do with the "why".  And the why in this case is "poor judgment" and "lack of impulse control".  Two things I really, really have a problem with when it comes to guys who are given a metric fark-ton of responsibility, information and contracts to deal with on a day-to-day basis.

You're not thinking about the long game .
Hillary and Bill have reaped millions of dollars in cash and billions in government perks and influence.

Rather than Hillary becoming a footnote to Clinton Presidency and showing up once a year on the The View. Hillary became SOS and maybe the next President.

Huma and Tony are close friends and proteges of the Clintons. It's entirely possible that Weiner and Huma plan a run at the becoming the first Jewish president  and a muslim wife !

My God that the same as having  Adamantium armor embedded with kryptonite defeating any media critic or political opposition.

So what's a BJ or sextexting fling, when measured against the rewards of power of the Presidency ?

On the other hand, the sex is why this gets so much press, whereas Virginia's governor taking over $100,000 in undeclared gifts and "loans" from a business is a little side note.

Estimates vary greatly, but 20-60% of married people have cheated, and yet financial issues are the leading cause given for divorce. She's spineless for being forgiving, like tens of millions of other Americans?

Are they next in line to be mayor of NYC or some such powerful person? No. That's what Huma wants, she's a political junkie and needs to be around powerful people. But when it's clear that Weiner's weener is going to keep him from Gracie Mansion, she'll dump him and find another rising star.

At least the chick that was engaged to San Diego Mayor Bob Filner had the good sense to flee when it was clear he wasn't going to be mayor for much longer.
