I don't care that the kid is a fan of that other team. I think both sides hope he recovers fully from the cancer.

I'm sure the people in Ohio would do the same if the story was reversed.

it would be cool in a way to see something like that for this kid, except I don't like that team from Ohio and you probably couldn't get Hoke and Meyer to agree to anything like that during the game.

Why?  Is there an Ohio State University out there without a "the" that you're trying to differentiate yourselves from?

Still, very classy move by Hoke.

do people in Ohio even like Urban Meyer, aside from his connection to that university?

there's a certain elemental simplicity to Hoke as football coach, which you could dislike because of his school affiliation. the rest is relatively decent, I think. I'm biased in that regard, though.

I never liked Meyer at Florida, and now he's in that place in Ohio. just not a fan of that guy.

Yeah, 4th in their division, maybe, if they're fortunate.  To be 4th they'd have to finish ahead of Minnesota (which is somewhat likely) and either MSU or Northwestern (since NE and UM will likely be 1-2 in the Legends).

The photo of the half empty student section is the New Normal at UM home games.  The students don't show up till halfway through the first quarter then will leave early if the game is in hand.  I believe this photo in question was likely from the UM-Illinois game last year, which was indeed a blow out and played in lousy weather which would have convinced the kids to leave early and get back to their smartphones and rainbow parties.  Stupid kids.

If you read some of my posts in that thread you'll see I agree that is not very representative of the UM fans I know away from the internet. Fark just seems to have a very bitter sect of them that takes even a child fighting cancer as a chance to hate despite "not really caring about tOSU" and it is the ones posting around here I was referring to. My apologies if it seemed like I meant all or even the majority of UM fans. That was not my intent.

Oh, and Ohio State fans aren't a rabid and bitter bunch?

Again I meant the Fark contingent of bitter UM folks. You can return to the previous thread to see my opinion on who has the greater % of asshat fans.

Have you been to a Michigan-Ohio State game on enemy turf?  I've been to both home and away games and I will guarantee that Michigan fans are much kinder to Ohio State fans on home turf than Ohio State fans are to Michigan fans.

As a season ticket holder I have been on both sides many times. I simply have not seen any overt acts of violence or even any real threat towards UM fans at The Shoe. Also I have never been harassed at games in The Big House either beyond the standard trash talk that comes with wearing the road team's colors. In my experience tOSU fans tend to pile on more trash talking but what I observed UM fans receiving was not much different then what I've found for myself in Ann Harbor. This an opinion shared by many other tOSU fans I have known to attend games at both stadiums.

I believe it comes down to a matter of perception and possibly UM fans seem to have a bit thinner skin because my own experiences have shown me there is little difference in fan treatment. I hear a lot about "stories" and examples of the terror that befalls Michigan backers when attending games in Columbus with the overwhelming majority of them being 2nd or 3rd hand accounts. tOSU fans have similar stories walking through parking lots and tailgate areas in Michigan but I give little heed to most of those as well. There are true occurrences of bad behavior on both sides but to suggest one is worse than the other just doesn't hold up to my personal experiences which cover the past 13 years of games. Take that for what you will.

I have respect for Meyer and the Buckeyes...Ohio State fans...not at all.

I find that where respect is given, respect is usually received. If you really think all tOSU fans are the same then I think you need to gain some perspective.

Then again, we have more teams in Michigan worth mentioning than Ohio State's football team.

Really? Considering you have nothing outside Detroit I'd say Ohio has you beat In terms of sheer numbers.

As for quality...
I care not for the Browns or the Bengals but neither is any worse off than the Lions and I would put the Bengals ahead of that group anyway. The Tigers have been good recently but not much more so than the Reds, both having been eliminated by the same team last season. Sure the Indians are terrible but it's still 2 teams to 1. Your Red Wings are much better than the Blue Jackets but as a recent expansion team vs. an Original Six squad I would hope that was the case. The Pistons and Cavs recent histories are a wash and Ohio State holds up pretty well vs. Michigan and Michigan State in the sports that people watch anyway.

Seems perception problems persist for Michiganders even beyond their "horrific" treatment at the hands of so called Buckeye hooligans.

Ah so wussy Charger fan it is then. No Bronco fan would use a tired line like precious little snowflake. Even Chiefs fans have more self respect.

I will say this for Michigan and Ohio State alums though, you will never hear either side whine about opposing team's fans taking over their stadium on game day the way Bolts fans do. Pansies!

the1hatman: As a season ticket holder I have been on both sides many times. I simply have not seen any overt acts of violence or even any real threat towards UM fans at The Shoe

Not so much in the stadium, but I've had crap thrown at us and our group has been threatened when walking to the Shoe.   By the same token, I've always treated Buckeye fans with respect at the Big House (other than normal taunting...i.e. Go Blue, Buckeyes suck).

Oh we do, but we found out that nuking it from orbit wasn't covered by our health insurance.  Apparently being Detroit is a pre-existing condition.

Big Merl: I've honestly never met a bad Ohio State or Michigan fan.  Texas fans however...

In my experience the worst fans of the rivalry are those who never went to either school.

I hope "Michigan" never even shws up for another game. Good luck kid, you honestly have two whole states rooting for you to win.

Yeah.  I am an OSU alum, and some of the non-alum fans make me cringe.

On a side note, I went to a Texas A&M/Texas rivalry game one year (at A&M).  That was something....special

/Drives me nuts

Actually it drives even more people nuts that pretentious douchebags think any school has "THE" in front of it.

Wiki

"Also in 1878, in light of its expanded focus, the college permanently changed its name to the now-familiar "The Ohio State University", with "The" as part of its official name."

Probably the 3rd string running back who will be playing by the second half of the first game once AIRBHG has done his thing.

Playing RB at Iowa is like teaching Defense Against the Dark Arts at Hogwarts, except real life

You've... you've never touched a girl, have you? We're talking about football, not children's books for nerds.

Books that 80% of girls my age (23) have read. Make that joke to an Iowa girl and watch how wet she gets...

... coming from a guy who loves WWE so much he named his Fark handle after a pro wrestler ...

THIS! It disgusts me to no end. I don't care that you are a fan of a University's sports team but don't act like you have invested time/money with the team (aka, saying "We" when you refer to talking about them.. You were never on the team so shut up..) when all you have done is buy a farking jersey..

I live in Columbus and every die hard, crazy ass buckeye fan I know (which is a sickening large number) think this is an extremely classy move and have good things to say about the whole situation. The only people that seem to be cockbags about the whole thing are the fans that post to internet message boards, which is just further proof of the John Gabriel theory.

All this back-and-forth between Michigan and Ohio over which one is better.  Who gives a fark, you're still Michigan and Ohio.

The only solution here is for the 12 year old to fight a 12-year-old cancer patient from Michigan at the 50 yard line.  I'd say to the death, but they'll both be pretty much dead already.

right because that makes us think you are less arrogant and pompous

Great story though, Hoke is a class act more than you can say for the entire OSU university from Gordon Gee on down.

what's there to New York besides the city?

Albany? almost Jersey? the ass end of Niagara falls?

legion_of_doo: what's there to New York besides the city?

Well, okay then...from East to West:

-Long Island: further east are the Hamptons and other beach resort towns, the fishing industry, a number of world-renowned wineries, several world class golf courses (including two US Open sites - Shinnecock Hills & Bethpage Black), parks and beaches.

-NYC - obvious

-NYC northern suburbs: The Hudson River, West Point Military Academy, IBM corporate HQ, Bear Mountain State Park, Winged Foot Golf Club (home to several major championships including the 2020 US Open), several historic sites dating to colonial/revolutionary times, several colleges and universities.

-Upstate/Western NY: the Catskill Mountains, Erie Canal, the Finger Lakes (home to more than 100 wineries), Adirondack mountains and state park (the largest in the US), Cornell University (among dozens of others), several breweries, Buffalo wings, etc.

golf has its monster in Oakland Hills (hosting six US Opens, amongst other significant tournaments).

amongst all schools, the University of Michigan and Michigan State are significant in American academia... and those are public institutions, not private colleges or national military academies.

hunting, fishing, the outdoors... Michigan has one of the best parks systems in the country, not to mention the great lakes.

IBM? it matters because of what people do for the company in California, not Armonk.

people only give a shiat about New York because of the city, for the most part.

so you have NYC? yeah, we know already. everything else is pretty average.
