Those who don't learn from History are bound to keep drilling in the Gulf of Mexico watching out for antiques, swamps, logs, firearms and keeping them safe from the Ancient Aliens of Hitler

Oil, Gas, huge difference.  One is totally awesome to vent endlessly into the Gulf.

I went swimming on the gulf last week, yes there was a release of natural gas then also.

It's just gas now, but other problems could occur.

Also, methane is a heck of a greenhouse gas.

As long as methane gas is as healthy for the gulf as oil was, I have no problem with this.
If we learned anything from the Deepwater Horizon leak, it is that there are miraculous organisms that just swim around eating oil!  And that sheen you see on the water?  That is just the rainbows that the little magic organisms poop out!

Oil -> Miracle Organisms -> Rainbow Poop!

I figure there must be some magic organisms that eat the methane too so no worries here!

So they were drilling for natural gas when "they hit an unexpected pocket of gas"?

I'm going out in the backyard to look for unexpected buried treasure.

I get all the petroleum products I need from F*ck Island, where I am King Sh*t, AND because, frankly, I'm better than you, I don't have to do so much as lift a finger to get them because all my labor is from 3rd world, underpaid, starving children I have imported from shiatholes around the planet, SO, in reality, I'm enriching them *and* their futures, while I benefit at the same time. Not only that, I get free clothing from the US government and the NFL from their castoffs of post super bowl and election apparel, AND I feed the worker children from the finest list of cheap and endangered species available anywyere.

You know, I eat a lot of vegetables, too, and I need those to sustain my life, but I wouldn't lie down and let Green Giant buy off every politician available to keep pesky regulators away.

But, hey, keep on cheering for the petroleum industry, I'm sure they'll sleep with you.

Just wondering, are you white-knighting the horse-and-buggy industry as well?

before you take the drilling mud out and do any perforations of the casing etc there shouldn't be anything inside the casing that would blow out.

exactly, oil and gas wells are actually very well engineered.  you hear about the one or two wells once in a while that have problems like this.  Consider on the other hand the tens of thousands of wells drilled around the world every year that don't blow up.

Well crap. There was an accident on the local freeway. I guess we need to close and demolish that now.

Can't go anywhere near where an accident occurred.

see, superior Europeans would never drill offshore in Europe. why would we do it in America?

2013-07-23 04:13:11 PM
Talbot said there was no sheen visible on the water's surface, just bubbling gas. He did not give an estimate as to when the gas would be shut off.

i feel better for the little fishies already.

How does the Senate decide who gets to apologize to the gas company? The guy who already got lots of money from Big Gas, or the guy who would like lots of money from Big Gas? -- Heh heh, I said "big gas."

The WTC towers came down on September 11th, yet we keep building more skyscrapers and we keeping flying in planes.

When will we ever learn?

Sounds like the derrick hand wasn't monitoring the mud pits correctly.

There really is no excuse for a blowout if you maintain your equipment and are vigilant.

You really have 3 layers of protection that you really need fubared to have a blowout.

1.) the column of mud in the hole is not dense enough to resist the pressure of the gas, the density is pretty much boilerplate, as the derrick hand usually sits by the mud pits and they have gauges that show the amount of gas and oil in the returning mud.. you pretty much put that into a calculator and it tells you how much barite to add to the mud.

2.) The pinch rams are your first line of defence if the mud density fails, basically it just closes tightly around the drill pipe and prevents the mud and gas from escaping.

3.) if the pinch ram fails, there is a shear ram which cuts the pipe off inside the hole and closes air tight.

I used to work on a wildcat rig for a number of years and we never even had a blowout scare.

Has anyone ever claimed that Europeans don't do offshore drilling, or is that just a poorly constructed strawman?

You mean Big Buggy that doesn't care about the workers or the environment and only cares about lining its own greedy whore pockets?  Screw them.  I only support Little Buggy and Little Domestic All Natural non-GMO Juche Idea Oil that is socially responsible and works to minize their own profits as well as their footprint and never hoardes enough money to prevent layoffs should a couple quarters go south.  Best Oil, even.

Wow...the article makes it sound like everything is hunky dory since it's "only" gas being released
into the Gulf instead of oil. Yeah...because exposure to large amounts of methane gas never hurt
anybody.

Sheesh.

I know what a drilling rig is and I know what a wildcat well/prospect is, but what is a wildcat rig?  It only drills in unproven areas?

You are so very fortunate that you're able to go to local country markets and buy your natural gas and petroleum products and perhaps even drill for them in your own backyard... guilt free!

Good for you that you do not dirty your hands with the petroleum industry.

The rest of us aren't quite so fortunate. We have to lay down with the whores.

I was making 8K per month plus bonuses slinging my skills for a typical IT Services company.

Thanks to the oil bidness, my standard paycheck has doubled and when I travel overseas/offshore I get paid $900 - 1400 per day.

The wife has migrated from "you don't make enough money" to "you spend too much time on the road, when can we get a bigger house?"

And shes fat. And you guys are bagging on the business sector I work in. I'm going to drink some drano.

As soon as I run out of money.
