That's awesome. But why wouldn't he have just backed through the gate, was he afraid he'd scratch his truck?

welcome to Florida Mr Derp

He said he tried to back up, only to find the trafic arms pinning him in.

Dude, driving through the traffic arm is cheaper, less costly and less potentially lethal than sitting there and letting the bridge counterweight crush your truck (and possibly you inside).

Back through arms: pay insurance deductible on truck and cost to repair arms.
Ditch the truck: pay insurance deductible on truck

Also "Click to view video?"  You're damn right I'm clicking.  Smashiaty-smash!

"They've got to be able to stop that thing," he said.

Or, you know, and this is just a crazy thought, you could try to not run a red light to get ahead of a raising bridge...

How about paint a huge yellow striped area that says "DO NOT STOP HERE OR YOU WILL BE CRUSHED" on the pavement?

Or the road engineers could have moved the stupid gate back 12 feet more. It's nearly flush with the concrete counter weight... wtf? I'd have knocked that stupid gate over backing up, rather than have to explain why I didn't push my wife out of the truck before I bailed. lol

Assuming the gates went down before the bridge started moving, which is the normal routine, and he just scooted under them after the red lights started flashing, I have a question.

You're retired, sir, what is your god damned rush?

See, people who aren't from Florida would think that way. But this guy, unfortunately, lives in Florida. So there's his problem.

While I agree that this guy was kind of a dumbass on multiple counts, I have to question the design of any type of bridge that has the potential to crush any passenger car when it opens.

It's an odd design, but it's no different that a rail crossing. You ignore the light bad things happen.

It's not a design flaw, it's a feature.

Human life didn't used to be so precious.  We used to "lose a few" all the time, and it was expected.  I think it was a better way for the society to work, personally.  We didn't have to carry all these losers.

Even better:

'Now *that's* a big Florida tag.'

Or maybe:

'Some Florida tags are too big for the truck.'

FTFA: "the truck - squashed down to the tops of its front doors..."

I looked at the video and I can't correlate that statement with what I saw.

Squashing a truck down to the tops of its front doors doesn't sound like very much squashing.

So a Canadian gets hit by a block on a bridge while in Canada?  This has what to do with Florida exactly?

Canadiens... making Florida look worse day after day, how that is possible we now know.

Hell no. What would be the point in moving the lights/gate 15 feet back..... so that you could fit a car/pickup there without getting crushed? Then we would just have 2 idiots driving past the gates instead of one.

No amount of good planning can overcome stupid humans. At some point, an intelligent person would simply not get in the way of moving machinery (oncoming trains, airport runways, swing bridges, etc.....).

This guy is NOT intelligent.

What a f*cking shiat website.  Clicked to play the video, and it plays 2 advertisements, while it's playing the actual video "underneath" the ad's that are playing.

I used to play on that bridge as a kid.

2013-07-23 04:41:38 PM
I don't understand why the gates didn't close much earlier, so as not to allow anyone to proceed while the bridge was preparing to open.

Looks like the pickup truck got off easy.

If you zoom in on that yellow sign on the counterweight, it says to use the sidewalk as an alternate route when the bridge is raised!

The genius driver, while a Canadian who happened to be visiting Canada, now lives in Florida.  Apparently, Florida is a contagious disease.

I used to be a drawbridge operator (summer 2005) for the blackburn point swing bridge.  Its amazing how hearing the bells go off makes people think they're in NASCAR.  At least once a week someone would drive under one arm as it was coming down and then stop in the middle of the bridge when they realized the one on the other side was closed too.  Typical responses were,

1) Male: yell at me for being a "maniac" and closing the gate when he was so close to it!! (note: never saw the guys car before I went to close the bridge)
2) Male/Female in an expensive car: "Do you know how valuable my time is..." (typical response: do you know how much the ticket for running the gate is?)
3) Cute Female: "Tears/I got confused"

It was an interesting job, since at the time the bells, gates, and bridge controls were all manual.  They were all controlled from the middle of the bridge (bells and gates may have been from the bridge-house), so I had to stand on it when I opened it.
