"After surveying 23,161 Germans"

Oh, German happiness.  That's not as valuable as American happiness.  What a misleading article.

I prefer 73.

(Hint: 69, plus you each get two fingers for the ass)

I'm 33, and pretty damn happy most of the time.  I think the trick is realizing you're not going to be happy 100% of the time, that the awesome stuff is going to feel awesome only briefly then come back down to a baseline, and then getting over the bad stuff quickly and getting back up to that baseline.

I'm happy so much of the time that sometimes I think there is something wrong with me.

Everyone else seems so pissed off all the time.

2013-07-23 02:20:50 PM
Nonsense, I was happiest in 1998 when I was 31. I was living in London and the MDMA was very strong and very cheap, it was almost impossible to be unhappy. Of course, the following years were a savage comedown of truly ridiculous proportions but still...

We've reached peak 69, people. Soon there won't be enough 69 available for everyone. Doom!

I have to concur. Everything started going downhill about six months into my thirties. And it hasn't improved much in 8 years. However, I'm cheered that I'm not the only one; not that I want others in my age-range to be miserable, but it seemed so much like I was the only one.

2013-07-23 02:23:21 PM
I don't remember being happy at 23, I was struggling to make ends meet and raising a 4yo boy alone.
I'm pretty sure my happiness will peak at 52 (end of child support for my 2nd and 3rd boys) and again at 55 (retirement)

2013-07-23 02:23:41 PM
This sample is from a country that lets people actually retire.

"The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation. What is called resignation is confirmed desperation. From the desperate city you go into the desperate country, and have to console yourself with the bravery of minks and muskrats. A stereotyped but unconscious despair is concealed even under what are called the games and amusements of mankind. There is no play in them, for this comes after work. But it is a characteristic of wisdom not to do desperate things."

Henry David Thoreau

32 and everything more or less blows right now.  I just gave notice at a job where I'm disrespected on a daily basis, I quite drinking four months ago (major issue with it), and I stopped taking antidepressants and anti-psychotics.  I'm single and I very rarely have moments of any pleasure.  I'm hoping it gets better...

/not to shiat on everyone's mood, just venting

I was happiest around that age period as well.  Living in the City (San Francisco).  Single. Fair amount of discretionary cash. Lots of drugs or booze.  Got laid a bit.  I laugh when people say HS or college was the best time.  Not by a long shot.

Now married.  Money is much tighter.  More adult responsibilities.  Still happy, but it's a different sort of happy.  Oh well.

Only been the past two or three years here.... once I finally figured out that the "important people" at my work truly do hate all of us lowly peeps. The rest of my life is going pretty well, but 40+ hours (and even more on call-weeks) of soul sucking gets to me.

On the plus side... I'm still bangin the 24 year old UPS guy :)

Happiness peaked for me at about 25, in that brief post-college interlude before reality intervened. I'm just going to assume it all goes down from there.  For me it's better to live with flatlined expectations than be disappointed when better things don't come.

Because even if they do, you're dead in a few decades anyway.

/Not necessarily miserable; just not expecting great things anymore

"You fool!" said the nurse with a laugh
To the randy M.D. on the staff,
Who said with a whine,
"If you won't 69,
How about 34 1/2?"

I guess this study assumes you don't do any school post-college. College was some of my best times but age 22-24, my first years of vet school, were kind of "meh" years.  I was missing my friends and getting used to a new city, low on cash, constantly worn out from studying and feeling confused about relationships.  Everything has just been getting better and better for the past 5 years.  More free time, more money, steady relationship so more frequent sex.  Good stuff!  I think I'm the only person I know who isn't depressed about turning 30 (next month).
