Can I have my 45 seconds back? That made no got damn sense.

2013-07-23 02:12:18 PM
That was a rather large, greasy pile of fecal matter thrown at a wall.

And that's putting it in the best possible light.

Doc_Gerbil: Can I have my 45 seconds back? That made no got damn sense.

it was in the New York Post, of course it didn't make sense.

2013-07-23 02:28:10 PM
I guess one of their "reporters" couldnt' stand around snapping pics as someone got run over by a subway or bus, so they had to run that garbage.

/i would say the NY Post is the worst paper ever
//but then I read the Washington Times

2013-07-23 02:31:25 PM
What did he run out and leave them with a dinner tab?

2013-07-23 02:44:20 PM
Michael Moore made the riots happen?
Michael Moore made all the middle class folks who could afford to move outside city limits?
Michael Moore got Coleman Young elected?
Michael Moore made the leaders of Oakland, Wayne and Macomb counties engage in behavior specifically designed to screw Detroit out of anything positive including any form of mass transit that might (God forbid) make it easier for Detroit residents to travel outside city limits to get better paying jobs?

That pile of bullsh*t is nearly as big as Michael Moore

2013-07-23 03:04:59 PM
Moore did more damage to Flint than Detroit....

2013-07-23 03:05:32 PM
We get the differences between the two cases. Detroit is an anti-capitalist Michigan city.

wat

I thought it was the black people. That's what I heard in the Detroit threads.

You just don't get it.

The man is fat.

FAT!

Schweizer sums it up this way: "If the city of Detroit had in its public dealings been as open to capitalism as Michael Moore was in private dealings, it might be another Silicon Valley instead of another dying industrial city."

Can someone translate this from Derp to English? How is a government supposed to be "open to capitalism" in it's public dealings?

js34603: I thought it was the black people. That's what I heard in the Detroit threads.

Well, the black people who rioted in the late 1960s had a lot do with white people moving to the suburbs. So, yeah.

2013-07-23 03:13:16 PM
The man goes as far as making a movie called "Capitalism: A Love Story" and still gets called anti-capitalist.

The city goes as far as headquartering a slew of the countries largest companies including General Motors, Compuware, Quicken Loans, Little Caesars and still gets called anti-capitalist.

Some people are anti-reality-ist.

2013-07-23 03:28:16 PM
So Detroit is a failure, because Michael Moore is successful at what he does? Makes perfect sense to me.

2013-07-23 03:36:28 PM
Detroit is an anti-capitalist Michigan city.

I stopped reading right there, nothing in the rest of the article can possible redeem such a stupid statement.

2013-07-23 03:36:59 PM
i thought it was Ann-Margaret's hubby, Roger Smith, that destroyed Detroit

I'm fairly certain Detroit was in the shiatter before Michael Moore came to prominence.

In fact, he came to prominence precisely BECAUSE it was going down the shiatter.

Rick Snyder then replaces the democratically-elected City Council with an unelected "Emergency Manager" with unilateral control, and he still gets called an "anti-fascist".

Amazing how conservatives are coming out of the woodwork to declare Detroit failed due to "liberal policies". Of course, they can't name one. They can't tell you why L.A. and San Francisco and Seattle have done well while being all libby. They can't tell you why conservative Orange County declared bankruptcy far, far earlier.

Let me summarize for those of you who don't understand:

The New York Post writer is saying that Michael Moore (who's been associated with Detroit since his breakthrough film, Roger and Me) has been a loudmouth liberal who's managed money like a hardcore capitalist conservative while Detroit has been a staunchly conservative town that has been seduced by liberal unions. Or something to that effect.

In other words, let's try to make Moore look bad for being a successful public figure, but let's feel sorry for Detroit and excuse the fact that the city got itself into this nightmare by being horribly managed and unable to diversify itself to be more than just a relic of an era long gone.

/Michael Moore can be annoying and sometimes distorts reality in his documentaries to make his points, but he's looking out for the little guy more often than not. You can't say the same for Detroit... or the New York Post.

2013-07-23 05:10:23 PM
Many would say in the wake of Detroit's bankruptcy that city leaders "laid an egg". You know what else lays eggs? Emus.

Makes about as much sense.

Not disagreeing but Roger and Me was about Flint, not Detroit.

/still same story
//Flint makes Detroit look like Park Avenue

Whoever penned that opinion should never write anything ever again, and it's probably best for that author that nearby sharp objects be capped with cork or removed from arms length.

Detroit failed primarily because of capitalism; manufacturing is cheaper elsewhere and businesses moved accordingly, sucking out over 250,000 jobs over 50 years. The politicians share blame for not acting as aggressively as Pittsburgh. If we are to blame Detroit politicians, it should be for not being progressive enough. Forbes article on Pittsburgh reinvention - http://goo.gl/Mn9UqK

The Big 3 left Michigan for Randian libertarian paradises such as Ontario, where they are not saddled with the burden of paying for healthcare insurance. As of about 10 years ago I think it was $1,100 per car cost for health care for current and past employees.

Pretty much. The final nail in the coffin were the riots in 67. That's when everyone who could got the fark out.

No, it wasn't Moore, it was AFSCME

Is this teh same NY Post that went backrupt in 1993 and the new owners sacked loads of employees?

Next week, they should share how the entire staff came down with antibiotic-proof VD for the boys at the Liberty University's freshman dorm now in a similar situation.

Pinning down just one thing is disingenuous... Detroit is a clusterfark, emphasis on the cluster... from it's neighbor, Indiana, doing all it can to continue to flood the city with guns, to it's inability to diversify away from the automotive industry and increasingly struggling American manufacturing to just... well, small cities get smaller sometime... Buffalo, Rochester, whatever... it has happened before, and it's not the worst thing ever. The people will move, and the town will still find a way to exist, and maybe later it will find a new industry it excels at. That said, sans education, and given the American apathy towards where their stuff is manufactured, we deserve to fail on a national level, not just compartmentalize it to one city.

Might be just a coincidence. But we notice Detroit's filing for bankruptcy comes at more or less the same moment filmmaker Michael Moore has filed for divorce

My God that man's powerful. And a genius. He's managed to take down an industry as rich as Italy or France with a portable movie camera and a bunch of CEOs who refuse to talk to him. Huzzah!

Of course, socialism is all about the vow of poverty, so it's hypocrisy for a socialist to make money. Nope. Bankruptcy is the only way, otherwise you're a sell-out, like a musician who works for drinks and leftovers for thirty years and then suddenly becomes a star. Sell-out. You, know, like anybody you've ever heard of.

Yup. Liberals can't be rich. Of course, all liberals are stupid so they can't get rich. That's why those Red States like Mississippi and Nebraska are rolling in the big dough and don't need any welfare from places like Connecticut, Bel Air, the South of France, Switzerland, Hôtels de ville in Paris, or condos over-looking Central Park.

Yes, the mental world of Convervatism is full of miracles and wonders.

Don't forget San Francisco and San Jose.

/Moore is still kind of a douche though, despite how asinine the article is.

While I dislike Michael Moore with a passion, I only made it about a paragraph and a half before I couldn't take any more of this garbage.

IMO, the lesson of Detroit is more about absolute power and not about ideology. Had it not been for Shirley Franklin and now Kasim Reed, Atlanta was well on its way to a similar result. Biggest city in a state that needs the draw of said city provided a good bit of cover for very poor management, if not corrupt motivations. Bob McDonald could act as an example of the same theory from the other side of the political spectrum... Thankfully for the Old Dominion, Bob could only line his pockets for four years...Sadly, the two possible replacements seem to be cut from the same cloth as BMcD and not Shirley Franklin or Kasim Reed.
