You'd be surprised.  A former friend of mine was arrested for child porn a couple of years ago.  He ended up with probation because he put a baby in his wife.  I know several people who are not only still his friends "He would never do such a thing" but are willing to let him get back involved with a youth service organization.

There are a lot of people out there who just can't believe someone they know could be such a giant scumbag that the live in denial, no matter what reality is.

FTFA: Wilkerson seems to be in trouble for what he did once he discovered the illegal items.

I'm guessing he tried to continue the business, or sell it back to its former owners.  What a maroon.

Hard to tell without more details, it could be just from failing to report them right away (somewhat understandable, knowing that the police would likely confiscate the entire lot as evidence and that he'd be out the money he spent with nothing to show for it) but then again, if it was just failure to report, how did the police know he suddenly had the stuff?

From the article it sounds like destruction of evidence.

I honestly don't know what I would do in a situation like this. I would certainly be reluctant to walk into my local police station with an armload of kiddie porn.

That's why I'm inclined to believe he decided to get involved in the business somehow.  Which, if it's true,  was a total idiot move, and lumps him in with those sub-humans, as far as I'm concerned.

FTA: Henry claims they alerted the storage center and threw away as much of a child pornographic material they could find, brought the rest of the bins home, and then, found more.

I'm guessing after the "Hey, that storage unit you sold us had kiddie porn in it," phone call, the storage center called the police.  Then these two idiots started destroying evidence that could have been used to convict the child pornographer.

I think it's pretty clear. Being arrested with possession of child porn and your fiancee are serious charges, and writing about them made the author very upset.

While destroying evidence is bad - even if it isn't evidence of someone else's crime, I don't want boxes of kiddie porn sitting around in my house.  What if guests come over and visit?

Hey, let's make possession of something a crime.

2013-07-23 01:33:04 PM
Henry claims they alerted the storage center and threw away as much of a child pornographic material they could find, brought the rest of the bins home, and then, found more.
"We were coming to bring the stuff to the police station and before we could do that they were at our door, kicking in my door," said Henry. "I was sleeping. I get woken up by two officers pulling me out of my own bed."
Henry says officers raided their Southfield home. Officers seized a camera, underwear, two lighting devices, a binder with pictures of young girls and arrested her fiancee for possession of child porn and obstruction of a criminal investigation.
But she claims the stuff isn't theirs. It was the rest of what they planned to turn in. "I can't believe this," said Henry. "I can't believe they won't listen. I'm heartbroken right now. They won't even give him a chance to explain himself."

I can't help but think, what if I savaged a hard drive with child porn on it, how to handle this so that toxic stuff does not pull you down.  How would you manage not being charged with possession of child porn, or be grilled by an investigator looking to trip you up.

If you wanted to do the right thing and turn it in, you would want to use an attorney as a proxy for sure, and they might just advise you to format it because no good will come of it.

They were dumbasses for telling the storage center, then throwing it away.  Loose the stuff or contact an attorney first to figure out how to turn it in.

/I sure would not want my name in a paper slightly associated with  child porn.
//Assuming this is the real thing and not 16 year old girls or family photos of a child naked in a tub.

So, I don't watch storage wars or do any storage auctions.... when they auction this stuff off, nobody at the units opens up the bins first?

If not, that seems like a way too convenient way to money launder (or in this case, child porn distribution channel).... Put your stuff in a storage locker, let the lease lapse, have it go to auction, tell the other person to "definitely win the auction for lot XYZ".

Ugh.  I worked in a "mom & pop" computer builder/repair place in the late 90's when some guy brought his machine in for a drive upgrade.   Dude was adamant about making sure all his pictures were moved to the new drive.  During the copy process we discovered some heinous shiat.  Feds even got involved, set up a sting  ("computer's ready!") and arrested the guy in the middle of the store.

I still work on computers for a living, and I see some pretty kinky shiat, but if I see even a hint of CP the cops are getting called immediately.  Fortunately it has not happened since.

gilgigamesh: I honestly don't know what I would do in a situation like this. I would certainly be reluctant to walk into my local police station with an armload of kiddie porn.

It's not rocket science... You call the non emergency police dispatch number, explain to the dispatcher what you have found, and ask to talk to an officer, then set up a time to meet said officer at the unit, and don't touch it until then. At worst, they dust for prints, and find your prints only on the one or two containers that you opened up before figuring out what it's all about, Alfie...

Whatever you do, you don't just throw the shiat away, that's for sure.

wildcardjack: The cops showed up without being contacted and arrested the buyer of the unit...

No, the owners of the storage unit contacted the cops as soon as the buyers informed them of what was in there.

Methinks the buyers wanted to recoup something from their investment, instead of turning everything over to the cops (which they should have done), they decided to keep the lighting apparatus and the cameras. Went home, found more child porn, and were going to throw it away and just sell the lighting and the cameras. Cops show up, and it was all, "We were on the way to the police", which was total bullshiat.

They're not child pornagraphers, they're just greedy. They absolutely should get charged with obstruction of justice.

They don't let you actually have a detailed look at stuff before you bid. I have an uncle with storage units and it happens that way in real life too. Units with obviously valuable stuff don't even make it to auction, they just get repossessed and the valuable stuff gets sold.

The less valuable common items, such as tvs and furniture, get distributed to family members and used as persuasive collateral to manipulate the leechey family members. "I got this out of the minis. Now I have to drive those bratty kids to South Carolina"

ArcadianRefugee: they won an unit at Ypsilanti's

The form an is used before words starting with a vowel sound, regardless of whether the word begins with a vowel.  In this case, although the word "unit" begins with a vowel, its pronunciation does not.  Conversely, many words beginning with, say, "h", would take the indefinite article "an", such as in "an hour."

2013-07-23 01:47:04 PM
Ypsilanti police aren't saying very much. They say they are in the middle of a sensitive investigation. They say Wilkerson is not the target. There are others involved. Wilkerson seems to be in trouble for what he did once he discovered the illegal items.

It sounds like the police have an ongoing investigation which this guy just farked with by destroying evidence.

The second I found that stuff in the bin I would have left everything as it was and locked it back up. Removing anything at that point is just asking for trouble. Then I'd notify the storage place what's up and call the police. I'm not sure it would have occurred to me to talk to an attorney first since I'm not guilty of anything. I suppose it's better to be safe and cover your arse though.
