I'd bet that most male politicians on crusades to protect kids from porn spent part of their pre adulthood years looking for porn and trying to get laid. Yea, try to hide porn from the children and then watch as the kids find it anyways. Just like with drugs and alcohol.

How about we leave such things to the end user and not the government?

The best filter writers the UK can convince to take the job versus the combined effort of everyone who wants to get to the porn.

So what, like 45 minutes of porn-free internet after it goes live?

Does't sound like he retreated at all.

Mr Cameron laid out a multi-pronged approach to tackle the proliferation of both legal and illegal pornography on the internet, saying that the problem was "too big to ignore".
...
But in interviews after his speech, Mr Cameron seemed unclear of exactly which legal sites should be banned by the new filters

Mr Cameron said he did not "believe" written pornography, such as erotic novel Fifty Shades of Grey, would be blocked under the plans. But he added: "It will depend on how the filters work."

It sounds like from what I heard on the radio that this would be a program where you would have to opt-in if you wanted your ISP to not filter your internet. One of the radio hosts raised a good question in that why wouldn't this work. He mentioned that you can use Google Safe search to filter your web searches. Why couldn't ISP's do the same thing?

2013-07-23 12:15:06 PM
Wow, I don't think I've seen such completely out of touch idealism being pushed with no sense of what it'd take to implement or the consequences of doing so, at least not since the last tea party thread.

Dear, politicians. The crusty old puritan f*cktsicks these types of tactics work on are dying off. You need a new schtick if you wish to remain in power.

Using Google Safe search is your choice as a user or as a parent.  That's fine.  Having your government set a default about your values is a breach.

Again... conservatives are freedom except when it conflicts with how they want the world to be.

You want to filter porn? Ok, start by defining porn. Yeah, not gonna happen.

And I'm sure later he'll give a speech denouncing China's abysmal record on human rights and call on them to stop censoring the information thier people can get access to

The principle of free speech, does not come tih an asterisk that says "*unless it's dirty"  but way too many governments seem to think it does, Including, sadl,y the SCOTUS.

and notice how Cameron causually drops in a sweeping and very scary new legal power for the government:
"Possession of the most extreme forms of adult pornography will become an offence"
That's a huge shift, in the US, it's always been accepted that with the exception of child porn, a law banning the mere possession of obscene material could neve be a criminal offense (Thurgood Marshall said as much in a footnote to one of the landmark obscenity cases)

and also note how the "Slippery Slope" had ALREADY begun to manifest itself:
"Speaking on the BBC's Jeremy Vine programme, Mr Cameron said what would be included in the filters would evolve over time. "The companies themselves are going to design what is automatically blocked, but the assumption is they will start with blocking pornographic sites and also perhaps self-harming sites," he said.

I don't get it. Didn't we already learn this lesson 15 years ago when schools installed "Net Nanny" or whatever, and then Bio classes couldn't get to human anatomy pages and "Puss in Boots" disappeared from the internet?

// are Net Nanny, et al even still up and running?
// this is literally the first time I've thought of them since at least 2010

Because google safe search isn't error proof. Something that would be necessary with a feature that you can't turn on or off on a whim. Every country where they started an internet filter to screen out "obscenities" has been in the news about the blacklisting of "normal" sites. And that in many cases it is near impossible to get removed from.the blacklist.

You are obviously an optimist.

I'd have guessed .45 minutes.

As in "Oh, gee, the filter went live" <doubleclick on VPN client shortcut> "Hmm, hard drive kind of slow today, must defrag later..." <Moaning of porn actress from speaker> "Better check the outtakes of that one - I bet she's biatching about the size of his cawk in her ass"

I personally wouldn't have a problem with it if a) they had a dude prominently displayed on the next page (I haven't seen a hard copy of the sun in years but I seem to recall they'd put a smaller pic of a dude hidden at the back) and b) they didn't spout prudish right wing nonsense with absolutely no hint of irony. This is basically "I WANT TO BAN ALL PORN... except the porn i like".

2013-07-23 12:45:21 PM
If the Brits were so concerned about protecting innocent kiddies from images of nudity, they might want to start with figuring out how to take the teats off of page 3 of their major national "newspapers".

The proposed internet-banning would be ridiculously clunky, ineffective, obtrusive, and would also block the Vatican Art Museum because of boobies/wang on 3,000 year old statues.

2013-07-23 12:49:58 PM
Iceland suffered massively from the collapse of the financial markets a few years back.
The people of Iceland, outraged at their government's attempts to impoverish them at the expense of continental bankers, through them out and elected a more left-wing government. They even tried and convicted their PM for misconduct while in office. Everything was looking good for the new government...

...and then they went and banned strip clubs.
Iceland promptly voted the bastards who devastated their economy back into power.

Lesson? Don't mess with the boobies.

Wouldn't it be far easier for homes who wish to avoid porn to "opt IN" to a filter than asking the entire populace to "opt OUT" of the filter?

This method is already available, so where's the necessity of the government's butting in?

yeah, but that wouldn't be exercising power over the masses.  They want to control the idiots... it hasn't changed in 1200 years.  95% of all people are idiots... making them opt out exerts a lot of power.  People like Cameron are all for these artificial dick extensions.
