I guess this really isn't that surprising to me, because many mammals can learn names.  My dogs know their names (though assigned by people,) and respond accordingly.

I used to have a pet rat who absolutely knew his name and responded accordingly.  So it reasons that a highly-intelligent mammal like a dolphin would develop "names" for each other and communicate accordingly.

A dolphin child and his grandfather were swimming off Kawaii, and the child said, grandfather, how do dolphin children get their names? The grandfather replied, when a child is born, we look out through the ocean around us, and name the child after the first thing we see, like, Striking Shark, Floating Otter, Leaping Whale. Why do you ask, Beach Dogs farking?

A team from the University of St Andrews in Scotland found that when the animals hear their own call played back to them, they respond.

This is so not true. I went "swimming with dolphins" in Hawa'ii last March and they didn't try to rape me at all.

They are gentle creatures.

For instance, on the planet Earth, man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much - the wheel, New York, wars and so on - whilst all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time. But conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man - for precisely the same reasons.
