So you actually think a PG movie about Freddie Mercury won't suck? Dude was a rock star not a Muppet.

This, actually. The idea of keeping the movie PG is, honestly, a disservice to Freddie Mercury. I salute Cohen for defending artistic integrity - if a PG rating prevents him from giving a serviceable performance, then backing out of the role seems like a perfectly reasonable response.

I disagree with the PG rating. Sasha has got a point...

It's a shame. I would have liked to see him in such a role.

The band and studio were obviously afraid the movie wouldn't tank. Thank God they headed off that possibility.

A PG movie about a gay 70/80s rock star?

Yeah, that'll be... good.

The market for this film has been shrinking since 1991.  It probably peaked after Wayne's World in 1992, and maybe had some legs after Wayne's World 2.  The only recent activity for the Freddy "Q" factor was that Christian band leader who mimicked Freddy on Ellen five years ago.  At this point they'd be better off waiting another 10 years so you get some detachment from it all, ala "The Doors."

I love their music, but Freddy Mercury's story isn't something that lends itself to the big screen.  He was an intensely private person and the numerous documentaries done since he died serve the purpose well.  I'm not sure how successful an actual movie would be.

Sasha would have gotten a well-deserved Oscar for the role. He was born to play Freddie.

I'm sad I'll never see him play it.

What's the problem?  An improbable rise to fame by performing theatrical music to a rock and roll audience that was still tolerant of 8 minute songs at the time.  Why an R rating?  Cohen wants to show his penis, doesn't he?

In all, I think I'd like to see a retrospective on the performers from that era and how audiences never knew that the definition of "stage presence" in many cases meant "being gay" (yes, a loose association but with merit) and the promotional misdirection to keep this information a secret in order to remain "decent" and profitable - and how it's still being applied in recent years on members of boy bands.  Mercury is the perfect example.

He's right.  He smelled Baz Luhrmann in the water and got out.  Wise choice.

Damn shame. I don't really like Cohen's work but I would have seen this given the subject matter.

No chance I'm watching a PG version.

PG? The band has script approval? Too many cooks in the kitchen.

An R rating or a PG rating?

In any biopic portrayal, especially one of the life of Freddie Mercury, one has to consider.....

Is this the real life? Or, is this just fantasy?

I agree for the most part, but Morrison died in '71 and the Doors movie came out twenty years after his death. Maybe now IS the right time, since Freddy died about that long ago. That being said, I'm not so sure Borat is the best choice...there's gotta be a more respectable, serious actor out there that could pull it off.

Kinda with you here.  I love Queen and Freddie, but I just don't know how you can do a proper biopic about someone so private without it containing a bunch of BS.
