blacksharpiemarker: I disagree with the PG rating. Sasha has got a point...

It's a shame. I would have liked to see him in such a role.

Yeah, I'm with you here too. I think he would have ran with it and did a decent job (and shocked most people who were expecting a parody).

Sasha would have gotten a well-deserved Oscar for the role. He was born to play Freddie.

I'm sad I'll never see him play it.

HotWingConspiracy: So they want to make a PG movie about a gay rock star that was ascendant in the 70's.

Why?

Alphax: Most movies I see lately are PG-13. They want to go down to PG? That's the same rating as Turbo, and Despicable Me 2.

FYI: Jaws and Raiders of the Lost Ark were rated PG as well.

// those two are (part of?) the reason for the PG-13 rating in the first place
// I'm sure we can find a PG flick from the late 70s-early 80s with some boobs as well
// Turbo and DM2 aren't rated G?

Buttknuckle: Sasha was good in Les Miserables.

Agree that Les Mis was a good movie, but can't agree that SBC was good.  If Crowe hadn't been such a weak Javert, SBC would have been the worst of the cast.

I can see him playing Mercury very well appearance-wise facially but isn't he about a foot taller than Mercury was?  Guess they'd rely on "movie magic" to correct the height variances.  Plus, he didn't have much of a singing voice.  There aren't many with Mercury's pipes but I wonder if they'd just use old QUEEN recordings instead of SBC.

I think he and Helena Bonham Carter make a good comedy duo.

Sasha would have been AWESOME as Freddie and would have nailed the portrayal. Hey, I hate his "comedy movies" but can appreciate this man is dripping in talent.

A PG or PG-13 movie about Freddie is going to suck majorly. That guy lead an R rated life (actually NC-17 but I can live with a bit of editing).

He could definitely got the outrageous external facing version of Mercury, I can't think of anyone better suited to it currently around. Whether he could do the private version as well I guess we will never know now.

jmr61: Damn shame. I don't really like Cohen's work but I would have seen this given the subject matter.

No chance I'm watching a PG version.

Pretty much all of this.

How one is supposed to do a PG version of a rampant bisexual cock 'n' rock star of the first order who died of AIDS is unclear to me.

Black bars over the naughty bits?

There were entire years that were nothing but naughty bits, if half the scuttlebutt surrounding Mercury is true.

/scuttled butt.

Though I find his 'comedy' tedious and unfunny in the extreme, I think Baron Cohen is a great actor and has
a deal more artistic integrity than many others working.  And while he would have done a great job, the main
reason he was cast was because he bears a vague resemblance to Freddie when he has a moustache.

Gecko Gingrich: Sasha would have gotten a well-deserved Oscar for the role. He was born to play Freddie.

THIS.

Man, what disappointing news this is.  He would have knocked it out of the park, From the moment he was attached to it, I couldn't (and still can't) see anyone else play Freddie.

With him gone, I'll be surprised if Hooper or Fincher sign on to direct this clusterfark.

I never knew that Freddie Mercury lived a PG life.

AverageAmericanGuy: His portrayal of  Thénardier was bland and uninspired. I don't see what the author of the article is gushing over.

I found his performance with HBC to be the highlight of an otherwise unremarkable movie.

Crewmannumber6: enderthexenocide: it doesn't make a lot of sense anyway.  do they think a bunch of kids will want to see a freddie mercury movie because it's rated pg13?  anyone under the age of 20 probably doesn't even know who mercury is, even if they have heard queen songs on the radio.  the only possible audience for this movie is going to be people 30 and older, so why not give it an adult rating?

Teenagers buy movie tickets, to a greater extent than adults

About rockstars they've never even heard of?  The vast majority of people who give a shiat about Queen are over 20.  He was dead before anyone younger was born, and they pretty much only hear his songs at hockey games now.

So maybe teenagers who watch hockey would show up.

Ugh.  What a disappointment.  I was so excited about this.

Well, Rick Danko, Levon Helm, and Richard Manuel are all dead. Why does it matter what Robbie Robertson has control of in a thread about Freddy Mercury?

Normally I'm not a fan of judging movies by their rating, but PG? WTF?

Gotta agree here.  Never liked his comedy movies.  Then I saw him in Hugo.  Didn't even know it was him until after I looked it up.  He was great.  A shame about this, I think he could have done it justice.  He looks the part and seems to have the talent.

Robbie Robertson wants to take credit for all of Queen's music in addition to taking credit for everything from The Band.

The Band has always had control of their name and likenesses.  I understand their concern about a "warts and all" treatment making them look like total assholes.

A gorilla sculpture, painted as musician Freddie Mercury, has been removed after a copyright complaint.

Organisers of Go Go Gorillas, a public art trail in Norwich, were contacted by Queen's manager Jim Beach on behalf of the Freddie Mercury estate.

The estate claimed the suit "worn" by the gorilla breached copyright.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-norfolk-23226366

how the fark does copyright extend to the color of a jacket?
and if it does somehow....
how the fark is amazon and its various sellers and suppliers in business ?
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=sr_nr_n_14?rh=n%3A1036592%2Ck%3Ayellow+j ac ket

I would go out on a very far limb and guess that the main issue was the verbatim logo trace on the back of the jacket, possibly then poorly translated through a lawyer.

The gorilla in question had the Queen Q logo on the back, Flash t-shirt, moustache and overbite of Freddie. Any one thing they might of got away with but the entire package was using a copyrighted image and the Mercury estate had a very god point. It's now back but without the 'tache and teeth. Got the before pictures to prove it.

/how the hell the Iron Man, Optimus Prime, Batman and Superman ones are still around I have no idea.
//best one is Poppyland Hero

You can't focus on his music without focusing on his life. You can't focus on his life while staying PG.

I've noticed a pattern here.  People seem to think their high opinion of Sasha Baron Cohen would be void if they don't preface it with how tedious, boring, or silly his comedy is.  When in reality, it's impossible to dislike his comedy if you truly appreciate who he is.  The humor of his seemingly lowest common denominator gags is in the fact that he's of the highest order of minds and most practiced of talents.

To simplify-- "I like Sasha Baron Cohen.  He's a really talented guy, intelligent and sharp witted.  Why does he waste his time going around trying to be the butt of cruel jokes for morons, only to turn it around on them like a torturous mirror?"

I beg to differ, you just can't look any farther than their tent pole blockbusters.

Take Shelter was amazing. So was Killer Joe. So was Mud. So was Once Upon A Time In Anatolia (if you can handle subtitles)

Filmspotting gives out a Golden Brick award every year for great films that fly under the radar. Almost everything on this list is worth giving a chance to.

I get that, he does subversive humor fantastically.  But I don't generally like that stuff.  So me discounting that isn't because I think he is wasting his talents, it's because I don't like that. I am more of a visual gag/Monty Python/Zucker Brothers kind of guy.  There is some of that in the his movies, but that isn't generally the type of humor he does.  He does "squirm" humor.  Same reason I never really liked that show "Punk'd" (which is a cheap imitation of his stuff, I know) and a myriad of other things in the same vein.
