I don't know why people float the Meramec River. Lots of people drown there every year due to the wicked currents. and now we have Billy Bob shooting people in the face for taking a whiz on a gravel bed.

I agree. The Meramec River is deceiving. Yeah, its not that wide, but by no means is it a creek. It's deep in certain areas and there can be swift undercurrents that pull people under who are not wearing a life jacket.

No pun intended, but my guess is this was a pissing contest between rednecks that ended with the other drunk redneck dead.

Yeah, no, the guy with the gun has the power. You got your friend killed.

My husband tried to calm the guy down," Loretta Dart said. "He went to the guy's arm to try to stop him, but the guy jerked back and popped him in the face."

Oh, wait. He tried to grab a guy's arm who had a gun, and got shot by him? Oh, that's his own fault then. 'Calm him down' my ass, he was trying to disarm him and he failed.

Crocker told a detective that men were yelling at him "stating that they weren't going to leave and that the gravel bar was public property," court records say.

At one point, Crocker told Kling, "I have the power here. I have the power," Kling said.

Kling said, "Put that gun down and we'll see who has the power," according to Loretta Dart. Kling, 24, of Robertsville, said he and his stepfather were trying to reason with the man.  Then, Loretta Dart said, her cousin picked up a rock. (Crocker told police the man had a rock in each hand.) Her husband stood between her cousin and the gunman."M y husband tried to calm the guy down," Loretta Dart said. "He went to the guy's arm to try to stop him, but the guy jerked back and popped him in the face."

So the guy comes at your unarmed group with a gun, fires in the air, fires in the ground and you want to start a rock fight. Never bring a rock to a gunfight.

Yeah, at first I was thinking the shooter was in the wrong, but the story definitely makes it sound a lot like self defense.

looks to be like it's hillbilly on hillbilly violence. The victim and his family doesn't exactly sound/look like clueless city folks either.

Also outside of st. louis and kansas city the entire state of missouri is pretty much redneck.

Precedent was clearly set in Mustache vs. Mustache, Alabamy, as well as Mustache vs.The US Government, Missourah, that the party whose drunken-ness exceeds their ability to fire at the other party within a two-foot radius of said party's mustache, is liable for a crime. That is not the case here, your Honor. In this case, the urinating mustache bears the responsibility to flee, and if possible jump with hilarity back into whatever body of water party of the first mustache emerged from.
Harumph.

All that legalese about property rights is interesting, but isn't it kind of beside the point? People forgot to act like human beings instead of chimps, a pissing match involving a gun ensued, and a dude died. Who cares whether or not actual trespassing was involved at that point? Even the shooter doesn't know if they actually were. Jeesh.

Yeah, but that's always the case. Correlation does not equal causation. Banjo players are regularly happy. And, probably, Ned Beatty look-a-likes are regularly being anally raped or otherwise violated alongside various bodies of water.

morg: I don't know what to think but why did the guy leave the river to piss?

I've floated this same stretch of river several times.  Sometimes you pull over on a gravel bar to pee, eat, take a nap, take a break, what-have-you.  And sometimes, when you need to go to the bathroom, you want to go a little into the bush so you're not unloading in open view of your friends and all the other floaters.  It also rained a bit yesterday, and I've heard reports that the family was taking a break due to possible rain and lightning.

I believe in MO the property is technically private, but is treated similar to roads, in that people have a right to passage.  That river is VERY popular with floaters; it's been crowded every time I've gone and people need to take breaks sometimes.  I'd think anyone with riverfront property there would be fairly used to floaters, who are generally drunk but harmless, and I've never heard of any kind of incident like this before.

I mean, I've never seen houses by the water, only dense trees as far as I can see, so was this guy was just hanging out by the river with his gun, or what?   I agree withCanton, technicalities regarding the property rights aside, people are so antagonistic that something that starts as innocuous as a guy taking a beer piss by the water ends up escalating to the point where someone gets shot in front of his family.  It's farked up.

2013-07-23 01:42:29 AM
I must be missing something. Why didn't they just pee in the stream like normal people and keep floating?

Well, ok. But what kind of moron escalates a confrontation with a gun waving redneck on that gun waving redneck's property (or what he is vociferously claiming as his property with a posted sign backing him up)? I bet if they'd left instead of picking up rocks, he wouldn't have shot anyone. Just saying. The guy's definitely in the wrong for shooting, but anyone who taunts an angry redneck who is already holding a gun is too stupid to live.
