Schools everywhere have stepped up the fight against bullying, especially the kind that led to the 1998 murder of a 21-year-old gay man named Matthew Shepard

Wait, bullying led to that murder? Where did that unsupported assertion come from? Even if true, does that somehow make the murder worse? IIRC it was just a couple of murderous asshats looking for an easy target after their plan to rob a meth dealer fell through.

You aren't following "the narrative."

People like narratives.  Without them, death seems senseless, and that's a difficult thing to accept.

Steve Jobs "achieved" death, didn't you hear?

I'm pretty sure I remember reading extensively that those asshats targeted, tracked and killed Sheppard because he was gay. Targeting someone because they are a certain way falls pretty easily under "bullying" and I don't think it's a stretch to say that schoolyard bullies very often grow up to be violent adults and predators.

Here you go, always willing to white knight an attacker and make light of a victim.

Some people just cannot stand it if a bully gets flagged. It makes them nervous someone might be flagging them. I wonder why.

Because however much they publicly decry bullying, deep down they really feel that those people need to be put properly in their place, y'know?

Ottumwa resident Pam Schulz, who has nine grandchildren in Ottumwa schools, was relieved to learn that the play will not be a high school production.

"When I saw the article in the paper, I thought, 'Well, that's certainly the right approach,' " she said. "That's not a play that should be promoted for any family entertainment. I'm especially concerned about the younger children. The way it's presented is just not healthy for student entertainment."

At that point there wasn't hate crime legislation at the federal level, or at the state level (at least, not in their state).

In fact, temporary insanity due to "Gay Panic" was part of their defense. They were probably just trying to avoid premeditated murder charges, and thus the death penalty.

The only reason that this is a controversial issue is because of bigotry and religious superstition.

That which is divisive only pisses everyone off even more than they are right now.
