I never gave permission to NASA to use my likeness to promote their "space program."  I shall seek damages, and have this photograph removed from public view.

I can't see a damned thing.  Somebody get out there and wipe that fog off the lens.

Just don't send it to NCIS. They'll take that photo and enhance it until you can see the Abercrombie & Fitch cat...I mean the copy of Hustler under my bed.

Mr. Coffee Nerves: Just don't send it to NCIS. They'll take that photo and enhance it until you can see the Abercrombie & Fitch cat...I mean the copy of Hustler under my bed.

I had the same thought. The entire episode would consist of nothing but the words "zoom" and "enhance", but by the end they could solve any crime that was taking place at the moment the photo was taken.

Earth looks Photoshopped in that picture.

I can tell by the pixel.

I wonder if this is for NdGT's homage to Cosmos?

And seems like as good a time as any to repost Sagan's meditations on The Pale Blue Dot.

Still haven't solved the redeye effect, have they?

"Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there -- on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam. ~Carl Sagan

Carl was channeling his inner Ketuvim...

To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;
A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;
A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away;
A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.

Not that I blame him...

Honest question.  How in the hell does a pic get back to earth?  900 million miles?  I mean, it's not like the satellite is hooked up to a damn phone line.

Let me guess that you're too young to remember the days before cable television, back when tv signals were actually sent over the airwaves?  (although, they still are)

We should send out a bunch of probes in consistently larger orbits to act as repeaters.

That scale can't be right, can it? Doesn't that picture put the moon about 10x closer than it actually orbits?

Just did the division, and I think the moon should be about 29-30 earth-diameters away. I don't think it looks like that in the picture. What's the dealio?

You're viewing the circular orbit at a shallow angle. Depending on where the moon is along that orbit, the projected distance can be much less than the true radius.

Objects in mirror are closer than they appear.

Optics can do weird things.

Also, the limit of resolution on the image appears to be causing the apparent diameters of the Earth and moon to bloom, making them appear larger than they are.

That picture, if I understand how sympathetic magic works, contains roughly 3 billion souls.

Now that's powerful juju, right there.

I just have never been able to understand how Neil got to be so popular, the guy is so creepy, and just plain boring. To be fair Sagan had a creepy vibe to him also but his was a "I'm higher than fark" kind of creepyness..
