It was very Giambi-esque.  His thumb wasn't getting any better anyways so maybe he just decided to stop fighting.

He's a farking piece of shiat, the way he went all Lance Armstrong and attacked the test collector. And he kept pouring it on for a while, even though he knew he was guilty.

Not a good person. Void his contract, vacate his MVP.

Lying Armstrong-like POS is also my feeling.  I didn't begrudge him his MVP if he earned it, but as a Dodger fan he probably robbed Matt Kemp of his best shot at it.  Assuming Kemp's clean.  Who the fark knows anymore.

So, the "Still Lying Club" lost another member.  It's getting lonelier for Roger Clemens at the meetings.

All the extra self-righteous crap was unnecessary, but the test collector did, in fact, f*ck up.

We know Braun juiced in 2011, so take the MVP away from him after farking him in the ear with it.

He should drop them on postseason awards and records earned with PEDs.

No one cares about All-Star appearances.

I'm completely and totally shocked.

shocked that MLB took action, that is.

Also, ARod's career has just evaporated.

All the Dodgers fans are already yelling from the rooftops about it, but I don't hear them talking about yanking Gagne's Cy Young.  It's a slippery slope and they just need to let it go. How far do you go back with asterisks?

Braun took steroids? Yeah, and grizzly Adams had a beard.

i forget the statistic, but i think after the 2011 season (or was it 2010?) when the Brewers knocked my Snakes out of the playoffs, Braun as I recall had more or less owned the pitching staff.  so when the initial "Braun roided" story broke, there were quite a few Snakes fans bitter that he cheated.  can't change anything now but, yeah, those wins are tainted.

legion_of_doo: shocked that MLB took action, that is.

MLB has no choice anymore.  and I expect at this moment, literally at this moment, A-Rod is pleading with MLB to make a deal.  this was all rumored two weeks ago:  "braun, a-rod facing massive suspension after all star game".  you saw the stories.  Braun is easy meat.  small market, not a huuuuuge name recognition.  A-Rod is for good or ill one of the most recognizable faces in all of sports period, much less MLB.

2013-07-22 06:57:09 PM
MLB must have had some serious dirt on Braun and since the Brewers were going nowhere fast he figured he might as well punt the remainder of the season, get his hand healthy and come back next year.  He'll be a persona non grata outside of Milwaukee but he will be ready for 2014.  I'm sure he could have appealed but all that would have done was take him away from a team hoping to contend.

2013-07-22 06:57:49 PM

rickythepenguin: Is Bud gonna drop asterisks on the ROY, MVP, and All-Star awards?

No. Because Bud really does not want to know that everything from 1988 to 2010 didn't happen. Once you start making a list of things that need to be removed....that list gets very very ugly for MLB.

And knowing that, Braun should have kept his farking mouth shut.

If somehow storing completely sealed samples in a fridge causes spontaneous growth of synthetic hormones, I'd say the collector should write a scientific paper and apply for research grants.  A dazzling career in science is in the offing.

If Braun can put up numbers like last year...why use in the first place? I mean, he was tested 3 times (according to reports) and was all fine and had a season just as good.

Is there a year+ shelf life on using that I am unaware of?

yeha, and then of course a brewer or dodger is going to come after me about Gonz' 2001 season.  thing is, Braun did this while MLB began testing.  flagrantly flouting the testing regime, after having beat it (rightfully) on a technicality.  brazen.

I don't know if it'll "end" so much as they'll just find something else that's either undetectable by the current testing or not banned yet.

azmoviez: Gagne's Cy Young.

you know those seats in right field on the ground?  we got those once.  to get to the restrooms/food area, you had to walk by the visitor's bullpen.  Gagne was warming up (this was i think the year after his scoreless streak, meaning maybe 2005 or so).  i was about maybe 10-15 feet away from him, and jesus lord, he was massive.  just freaking massive.  like a hockey player.  i couldn't believe how big he was being that close.

Braun should have STFU after winning his appeal, but I'm not going to get indignant about the fact that he saw an error in collection procedure and exploited it.

You're right, the arms race will continue.  It was going on well before the accepted "steroid" era and I wouldn't expect major suspensions to stop it.

There's a difference between between exonerated on a technicality and being exonerated on a technicality and then crowing about how pure and trustworthy you are, over and over and over.  Say "I didn't do it" if you want, but don't call the guy who collected the samples a liar and destroy his career when you KNOW you are the guilty party.

So yeah, I would prefer people don't act like Lance Armstrong and attack anyone and everyone that they think is "after them," and just accept their punishment.  Melky Cabrera did it, hell, Manny Freaking Ramirez showed more class than Braun.

azmoviez: It's a slippery slope and they just need to let it go. How far do you go back with asterisks?

This.  Sooner or later, once you start asterisk application, you'll end up coming back to your own favorite team, and it just won't seem worth it at that point.  Besides, the most vocal group asking for said asterisks are the ones in the sports media establishment trying to gain viewership/readership.  (And, unfortunately, they're also the ones doing the voting, so the next decade or two should be a giant dickwaving contest between them and the players, and it wouldn't surprise me if the players started asking for reform of the entire system.  But that's a completely different conversation in and of itself.)

And to add an opinion on  rickythepenguin's question, ROY is a much less prestigious award than it's made out to be.  Only 14 out of the 130 winners are in the hall, with maybe 4 or 5 more active or recently retired players likely to join them thus far.  Meanwhile, a quarter of Cy Youngs and half of the all-time MVP awards have gone to HOFers before you even get into active players.  At the end of the day, we've got a long way to go before we figure out whether Braun or Kemp are good enough to get that far.

None of them are clean. Not even Kemp. He just got caught. But he is a minor market player who wouldn't take offers from the big teams.

Braun never got big like Sosa,Bonds or McGuire. He may have used, but didn't get stupid.

No doubt Braun was an asshole about it, but the tester did screw up. It was a legitimate chain of custody gripe and I don't begrudge Braun taking advantage. I'll concede the point that he's a shiathead, though.
