The GOP has been the party for SNAKE OIL salesmen for a while now.
They attempted to create a philosophy (supply side economics) to support their ridiculous notion that less taxes/regulation creates MORE income to the state and a better economy.

LIES!  Factually proven LIES!  Yet, they continue to repeat them... they continue to sell false ideology on top of which they sell BOOKS and PRODUCTS to piggy back off that false national zealotry.

That's what's wrong with this country...  we are AFRAID to CALL LIARS, LIARS to their face!
What's uncivil is to be lied to continually, so much so, that during the elections FactCheck.com stopped covering Romney after he had more than 100 lies stacked up.   No one cared that the man to become the most powerful person on the planet LIES to YOUR FACE and we accept it, laugh it off, and say... Silly Republicans, don't know reality.  They know it!  They want to bend it with LIES!  That's what a snake-oil salesmen does.  Drive those CON MEN out of TOWN!  But we don't, why?

The truth is, peddling shady products to your most loyal listeners and readers is the rule, not the exception

I got curious and clocked an hour of the Rush Limbaugh Show one day.  I don't remember the exact numbers, but there was something like 20 minutes of actual 'show', a couple minutes of advertising for the show (commercial ends, "The RLB will be right back with guest Heywould Jablowme", new commercial starts), a few minutes of local news at the top and bottom of the hour - and about 35 minutes of commercials.

To compare to TV - an hour long show there usually has 42 minutes of actual content an hour.

There's a new business station in town which mostly plays Bloomberg radio segments, but at 5pm they have The Kevin McCulloch Show which is a conservative "business" show.  It's really an infomercial masquerading as an actual show.  The guests are frequently selling books about how you can get rich quick.  Another common guest is "Actors, Models, and Talent for Christ" which is the age old modeling agency scam, but aimed at young Christians specifically.

Then there are people trying to sell speculative stakes in mines - specifically gold mines.  I can't think of a more risky move for the individual investor than speculation in a specific mine.  They're still doing this BTW.  Have the people who listen to this show not looked at a gold chart in six months?

If I lived in a disaster prone area and I do, it's common sense to keep a little kit handy. We have a lot of hurricanes in my area, so I've got some canned goods and freeze dried foods, some water that gets rotated out, a little medical first aid kit, and a few other odds and ends.. Enough to get me through about two weeks without power. [ even a little hand crank charger for my nook and phone ]. Total cost, just judder 70$ or so.. The biggest cost being the hand charger... These idiots are getting robbed blind.

Beck cut tearful promotional videos for the company, hawks them passionately on his radio and TV programs, and even designed a coin for the company this year (it reads "mind your business" on the front).

To these people "mind your business" translates into "It's my right to scam anybody who falls for it.". Beck would be circulating the Nigerian email scam if the Nigerians hadn't come up with it first, and we would all be expected to look the other way.

To be perfectly fair, gold isn't snake oil, it's actually gold, and a valuable commodity, I don't think it belongs in the "snake oil" category.

The problem is the inflated price they charge, the fake coins they make, and the way their actions artificially inflate the market. They still have a legitimate item at heart that has real value, unlike your common snake oil claims. The problem is; I don't know what this would count as...

It would count as Snake-oil with a drop of an antimicrobial put in there... a bit so it helps once in a while for a really small ailment.

Point is, they are selling LIES.
The gold they sell is CRIMINALLY above spot price and is a vehicle to rob people who are afraid of the stock market. Glen Beck is the obvious example here (his audience is primarily old people)

You CANNOT eat gold.
You cannot USE gold in large amounts like silver is industrially.
Gold has value because people have historically said it does.  Just like the dollar has value because the USA says it does.  There is nothing that we 'need' to survive in either gold or paper money, both are useless for our survival as a species (vs. drinkable water) and are used PURELY as a medium of exchange.

LifeLock, an identity theft prevention service, is one of Rush Limbaugh's most loyal advertisers and was one of the few that stuck with him after most fled following his attack on Georgetown Law student Sandra Fluke. In a previous life, the company was fined $12 million by the Federal Trade Commission for deceptive business practices.

Yeah, that's just the tip of the iceberg... There's a bundle of articles on the New Times regarding the company AND it's founder...

I'm forced to watch Fox News at the gym whenever I go (lot of older people in my community and they won't change the damn channel). It's amazing to see the commercials they have on that channel. My favorite are all the new silver commercials that pop up.

"The Dollar is collapsing! Gold is collapsing! So buy silver! Unlike gold it won't fall in value!!"

My brain literally died a little inside. First off, who the hell was stupid enough to fall for the gold swindle in the first place? "This item will only increase in price, netting you a fortune! So like any sane businessman, I am going to sell you all of my gold instead of hanging onto it myself and making a profit!". I mean really? THEN, after the gold bubble burst, they have the audacity to treat silver the same exact way?

Well, like spam, they wouldn't do it if it didn't work. I feel sorry for people who watch that channel and lose their life savings to idiotic scaremongering.

I didn't agree with it, but I saw the reasoning behind the gold bugs.  They believed gold to be more of an alternative currency than a commodity, and that it would increase in value as long as the dollar was being inflated by Fed policies.  Of course to reason that way, you have to start with the assumption that gold is somehow immune to bubbles, which is where they lose me.

That said, the bullsh*t Beck and the other criminals were selling wasn't a real investment in gold.  Most of the time it was gold certificates that were tied to gold leased by the company.  5, 10, or more certificates can exist for each actual unit of gold as each company that leases it issues them, so the certificates themselves are significantly less valuable than actual gold, probably even worthless if the hyperinflation collapse they were expecting actually happened.

Look - most people are morons. Or, more accurately, most people are sloppy thinkers (and sloppy language generally belies sloppy thinking, so watch out). Few people are in the habit of rigorous critical thinking. Most people come home from work, turn on "Duck Dynasty," and let their minds idle. Now, it's certainly true that most people lose some cerebral function over time, but people who are in the habit of keeping their brains engaged and active lose far less than their peers. Smart people lose a step or two as they age, but it's the stupid people - or, more accurately, the intellectually lazy people - who really deteriorate over time.

I think my favorite part of the Goldline scam is that (as I understand it) they take your stupid, worthless dollars that nobody will want when society collapses and, in exchange, they give you a certificate that says "You, Coonhound J. Sisterfark, now own one entire ounce of gold in the Cheyenne Mountainesque vault here at Goldline, and, when Obama finally unleashes his Communomuslin Robotroopers to outlaw Jesus and force all True Americans to masturbate to the Odessa Steps sequence that gold is *yours* to keep, once you brave the C.H.U.D.-infested wilds of the Midwest and conquer Wayne Newton, Warlord of the Vegas Wasteland. Total double pinky-swear. Your gold is real, and it's yours, but we'll hang on to it for safe-keeping. Thanks for your kid's college fund."

At least you can still eat a drum of Apocalypse Chow and take your million rounds of .22 long rifle to the range for some fun.

I am not a precious metals nutter, but one difference I can think of is that there's a lot more gold in the ground waiting to be mined. Silver's pretty much all tapped out.

...well, according to John McPhee's geology collection I read a couple years ago, anyway. It was written circa 1980 so I guess it's possible they've found some more silver since then.
