Canadian football is awesome but it's damn hard to find coverage here in the southern US until the playoffs start.

Subby here, I'm not foolish enough to say that the Riders (I am a fan), with a payroll of about 4 million, would match up well with a NFL team (payroll 70 million). But DAMN! They are just steamrolling the rest of the CFL right now.

And I like it...

But good luck to them. Their fanbase seem to care more about the CFL than the other seven cities combined.

Let's not get too hasty. Start them off small, with a WAC or Conference USA team. Let them get their feet wet before bumping them up to the NFL. Or the SEC if you want them to at least face a similar payroll.

Nothing could be quite as stupid as suggesting that a team quarterbacked by Darian Durant could even gain 3 yards on an NFL team.

Surely not.  This is a guy who got cut by the Ravens, who at the time had Kyle Boller and Anthony Wright as their QBs.

Sigh... Doug Flute, Jeff Garcia, Warren Moon, Cameron Wake, Jerrel Freeman (Colts lb) just off the top of my head.

The players aren't chumps, even if they don't make the NFL.

The general rule being what?  That of the thousands of talented college football players, only a tiny sliver make the NFL?  That there are 99 for every one that make it, that are within a hairs width of making it?  And some of those, who might be amazingly talented athletes, but find themselves undersized for NFL purposes fit in just fine with a bigger field?

Feel free to argue about what makes the 'perfect' football player for the NFL, but 'chumps' these guys ain't.   And it's not a hard theory to prove.

unyon: The general rule being what?

For the purposes of this conversation, the general rule is that no team quarterbacked by Darian Durant would stand a chance against any NFL team, with the possible exception of the NY Jets, who themselves have a CFL-level QB (maybe).

I never said they were chumps, but again, to generalize, the talent level in the CFL is most definitely below that of the NFL.  That's all there is to it.

not quite as good as the game i saw this week. alouettes had a 24-0 lead at the end of the first quarter then lost 38-27. say what you want about the cfl, but that is nfl level bed-shiatting.

/have tried to get into it by watching the few games on nbcsn

almost forgot, they had a chance to turn it around with a kickoff for touchdown, but the guy was run down and fumbled it into the endzone

I can't believe how bad the Alouettes are this year.  Dan Hawkins may have been a good NCAA coach but he is most certainly not a good CFL coach.  He keeps this up he won't last the season.

You jest but honestly, the take-home cash payments for an NCAA athlete is around $10,000 to $15,000 a year (that's just the actual check they deposit into their checking account, not counting scholarship or the health insurance that they're allowed to get but no schools really offer).  With 85 scholarships, you're talking a payroll of between $850,000 to $1,275,000 a year.

If the above poster is correct and the Roughriders have a $4 million payroll,  when you add in the value of the scholarships, the NCAA students are higher paid.

Roughriders, the Rough Riders haven't existed since about 1996.  They were replaced by the Renegades in the early 2000's and next year will be replaced by the REDBLACKS

Wow they got a raise since the last time you made up that number. Generous of you, by next thread NCAA athletes (all of them I guess, even the women's water polo team) will be pocketing a cool $50,000 a year according to you.

This amazing 4-0 start scares me. I am so afraid it's going to go south, and quickly. I keep waiting for a shoe to drop. Will it be next week in Guelph vs. this week's hapless Cats? Maybe Durant's foot will fall off. Maybe Sheets will lose a leg on the field. It's fun, but oh so scary to be a Riders fan this season.

Don't worry. No one is going to need to worry about the Ti-Cats this year. They got absolutely eviscerated last night.

It's going to be a long season for this Cats fan. *sigh*

I've never understood the appeal of the CFL. For the life of me, I don't get why people like it...I personally love the NFL, but I can't stomach watching a CFL game. It's painful. From the enormous end zones, to the piss poor defence, it's second rate garbage. Not to mention the fact that even a 4 touchdown lead with 3 minutes to go isn't safe. I guess some people would find that "exciting" whereas I find it pathetic.
If TSN would stop pimping the league as much as it does, the CFL would probably go away, and I'd be ok with that.

You probably don't like Arena Football either. Which means, clearly, that something is wrong with your head, because Arena Football is farking awesome.

Three downs means the ball is in the air *a lot* by necessity. The NFL would do well to consider it.

Probably less piss poor defence than the fact that the offence has to make more big place and so attempts to do so more often and that they have several significant advatages over the defence that the NFL doesn't have (more motion, running start, wider neutral zone, etc) to compensate for only having 3 downs.

And I agree with you, the best part of the NFL is how many games that the teams can quit trying with 5+ minutes to go as it is a forgone conclusion.
