Ohh, so is that what you call those GIFs with specific animation zones?
I need to learn how to make those one of these days.

Some nice ones there. Liked the subtle kitteh ear twitch one and the tornado one the best.

They are still gifs. Yeah, somebody spent a lot of time on these, but they are only gifs.

If by "spent a lot of time" you meant "used the rectangular marquee tool" in Photoshop, then yeah.

Actually some are animated png files, yes that exists, though IE doesn't support the format.

Here's a scene from Gladiator. Choose any part and make a cinemagraph that's even half as good as the ones in the link.

I'll be right here waiting.

That's more time than most people put into it (as proven by the gif in your own post). Also, you still need to place the cropped "animated" potion over a carefully chosen still version of the expanded scene.

If you're gonna be a pedant to try and look smart, go all the way so it doesn't have the opposite effect.

At the same time, there are smartphone apps that let you create cinemagraphs now. Hell, Nokia preloads theirs on all their Lumia phones.

Because I'm stupid, I am confused as to what makes a few of these cinemagraphs and not gifs.  Specifically
-the barber shop
-deer grazing
-Android phone
-waterfall coming out of the face

Some of these really aren't cinemagraphs, or at least are poor examples of what makes cinemagraphs so great.

For example: great cinemagraph

Not really a good cinemagraph.

A good cinemagraph has a large area that appears to be motionless and an area that has a lot of motion.  If the motionless area is something that you expect not to be moving anyway, it's kinda pointless.

I can stick my camera phone into a scene and take a picture but that doesn't make it good or interesting.

The Mona Lisa is just paint on a canvas.  Anyone can put paint on a canvas.

Aparently some people have to equate a snazzy artsy scene where the animation adds a unique flavor with the dancing banana gif.  Yes.  They are exactly the same.

No, the Mona Lisa is paint on wood.

Not sure how lashing out because someone (rightfully) attacked your outdated and unimpressive tech is supposed to endear me to your "beautiful works of art". This crap is only impressive to kids who just discovered the internet, like some Sudanese refugee having religious enlightenment because he just saw a can opener work for the first time.

GIFs aren't hard. GIFs aren't art. Put your presumed artistic talent into something worthwhile.

I forgot to quote this one, but it's a special case because holy shiat, gettin' all retarded over hipster tumblr gifs.

How does a poorly-colored, poorly-dithered, over-inflated outdated image file give any benefit over a damn video?

Jeez, you're probably the kind of people that I would offend if I didn't first ask you what your preferred gender pronouns were.

Here's a cinemagraph for you. And you better not judge it because it is totally better than anything else in this thread, you can't say otherwise because HOW DARE YOU THIS IS ART and you just don't get it man.

Popcorn Johnny, post your tumblr. I'm sure you've got tens of posts full of stills from Jem and the Holograms or Silverhawks or some other obscure 80s cartoons.

And I know you've got that "Stop liking what I don't like" image queued up, so go ahead and post that whenever. Maybe you've got one where it's a static image but the kid snarls a little bit or frothing drool drips out of his mouth or something, and tastefully overlaps with the stroke outline of the Impact font.

2013-07-22 01:30:51 AM
Hmm, guess I'm not getting my tumblr link.

Here's another Cinemagraph. Coincidentally, I was working on it all day before the link ever went green. I poured my heart and soul into it so that automatically makes it Good Art™ and worthy of respect. I've learned my lesson that this is surely the way God meant for media to be consumed in the Year of Our Lord Two-Thousand-and-Thirteen and that I daren't speak against it for wont of hurting someone's fee-fees.

But seriously, please keep having babies just because someone sees through your hackneyed, lazy attempts at art. Maybe make a couple of glowing wireframe cubes dance in Blender and then output to .gif, that oughtta wow some folk.

What are you even talking about? Cinemagraph is just stupid marketing-like term that allows people to feel good about posting high-end gifs.
