Really excited for the game today, hoping the US puts its foot down to proclaim its intent on winning the trophy.  Did anyone watch the games last night? Panama put 6 past Cuba and could have had more.  It took Mexico until the final 10 minutes to put 1 past TnT.

Today's US game makes me really nervous.  I know the US should win, but they will be playing in front of a hostile crowd for the first time this tournament and will be introducing new players that haven't played with this group at all and haven't played for the USMNT since qualifying.  Fingers crossed and all that I guess.

Just wondering, what makes a crowd in Baltimore a pro-El Salvador crowd?  You'd think it would be U-S-A, U-S-A all the time.

knbber2: Just wondering, what makes a crowd in Baltimore a pro-El Salvador crowd?  You'd think it would be U-S-A, U-S-A all the time.

There are over 120,000 Salvadoran ex-pats in the DC/Baltimore area and they always go to support their team.  The Salvadorans always used to be the largest immigrant group in DC until recently (I think).  El Salvador plays at least one game in DC a year since they always have between 10-40K people show up.

The game is a double header so the fans of all four teams are competing for tickets.  Honduras, Costa Rica, El Salvador and the US will all be playing on the same ticket so generally in the area the hispanics far outnumber the US fans in attendance.

Here is a good article on the area and soccer in the US in general in the Washington Post by one of the best soccer writers in the US:  http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/soccer-insider/wp/2013/07/19/in-g o ld-cup-el-salvador-feels-at-home/

US Line-up:  Rimando; Parkhurst, Besler, Goodson, Beasley; Corona, Beckerman, Diskerud, Torres; Donovan, Wondolowski.

Beckerman over Holden, no EJ and Besler back at CB.

For El Salvador, this is the World Cup. La Selecta will not be in Brazil next summer. Or, in all likelihood, Russia in 2018 and Qatar four years later. Once qualifying inevitably ends, ES supporters must invest all efforts and emotions into the Gold Cup, the region's biennial championship. Their team has never reached the semifinals in the tournament's 22-year history, and ES enters today's quarters against the United States in Baltimore as a definitive underdog.

USA: Rimando; Parkhurst, Besler, Goodson, Beasley; Corona, Beckerman, Diskerud, Torres; Donovan, Wondolowski.  Subs: S. Johnson, Hamid, Beltran, Orozco, Castillo, Shea, Bedoya, Holden, Bruin, Gordon, E. Johnson.

ES: Portillo; Garcia, Turcios, Henriquez, Posadas; Ceren, Menjivar, Romero, A. Flores; Blanco, Zelaya.  Subs: Carillo, Villalobos, Purdy, Granadino, Larin, Santamaria, Bonilla, Mayen, O. Flores, Renderos, Corea, Burgos.

Referee: Enrico Wijngaarde (Suriname).
This ref has officiated 3 USMNT matches before and all were 1-0 wins for the US.  Anyone with predictions?  I'm going 2-1 for the US.

The American Outlaws should be there in force, which should make for at least a really loud atmosphere.

I hope the US makes up for a lousy Red Bull game yesterday. Although Mike Petke at halftime was pretty funny. "Why did we bother to go through customs if we were going to play like this?"

Fox is the only broadcast station I don't get with my antenna so I just got to the pub. $2 ranger ipa, not too shabby.

He's getting better, I'll say that.  And he still has five years to get ready for the World Cup.

Hey, Gus didn't say that Goodman got T'd up by the referee, so he's OK so far.

That's a pretty well-designed play actually. Great run there to take advantage of the fact that the Salvadoran defense would push up and ignore any runner perceived to be behind them. He was running laterally and thus stayed onside.

I think that was fairly planned out. Good ball over the top to landon who had a good cut back for goodson to tap in. Great start

Has the USMNT ever had a stretch this good? They are starting to pull away from the minnows in Concacaf in a way that they haven't in the past.

IlGreven: Shoulda been 3, had Landon not tried to go cute...

I've really not been that impressed with Landon in this cup. On Tuesday, he had a couple chances he could've done better with, especially right after the keeper handball. His assist to Shea was fantastic, though.
