(BBC)   Venezuela decides to not even pretend to be friends with the U.S. anymore, apparently forgetting that a) they have lots of oil, b) they are close by, and c) the U.S. hasn't started a war in ten years and is getting a bit itchy on the trigger   (bbc.co.uk) divider line 6

Snapper Carr: Befuddled: FTA:  Samantha Power said this week she would seek to combat what she called the "crackdown on civil society" in countries including Venezuela.

We should clean up our own house before we chide others on how messy their houses are.

Samantha Powers is the presumptive US ambassador to the United Nations. It's her job to focus on other countries.

It's her job to represent the US, not to force her personal ideology or the ideology of her party onto other countries. She's demonstrated, through her gaffe, that diplomacy is far more than just saying "nice doggy" until you can find a rock.

What I find interesting is the use of buzzwords there - "crackdown on civil society" is a hot-button phrase, pulled from an April report created by the Obama administration. The sad part of that report is that, even as we decry Iran, Russia, Venezuela, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Egypt, and so on, we're doing the same damned things right here at home. An upswing in police militarization, the scathing revelation of extensive domestic surveillance, including journalists and editors, and the slow erosion of rights here in the United States would land us on that very same report.

It's hard to claim the high moral ground when you're doing some of the very same things your neighbors are doing, even as you're yelling at your neighbors for doing them.

U.S has already threatened to cut off Venezuelan gasoline supply.

/the U.S. refines their main oil production.
//Just like the U.S. refines Canadas oil and ships it back as gasoline. People don't like big new refinery's on canadian soil, but its ok if its 2 miles across the border in the U.S.
///What happens when you don't allow old canuck refineries to retool after 30-50 years of service.

No matter how hard the Venezuelans beg, we are not going to invade them.
