Good luck selling that tar sludge you call oil to anyone else. You can't even refine it yourselves.

It's got nothing to do with restrictions on producing refineries or overhauling existing ones.

There are ten times as many people in America as Canada.  It's simply much, much cheaper to ship the crude to America and re-ship the refined products into Canada, as required.  Refined products don't transport as well as the raw crude.

Who exactly is itchy to start more oil wars?

Literally everyone I know in real life, right or left leaning, is tired of the US pissing away money and lives on dick waving and foreign military adventures. Bring our boys home, and stop sending them out to reap profits for the right wing oil royalty. We'll tell you what.. in about 15 years when our entire military consists of drone carriers and drone delivery systems, you can have a little "proof of concept" war against someone really evil, like Oklahoma or Kony.

It's her job to represent the US, not to force her personal ideology or the ideology of her party onto other countries. She's demonstrated, through her gaffe, that diplomacy is far more than just saying "nice doggy" until you can find a rock.

What I find interesting is the use of buzzwords there - "crackdown on civil society" is a hot-button phrase, pulled from an April report created by the Obama administration. The sad part of that report is that, even as we decry Iran, Russia, Venezuela, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Egypt, and so on, we're doing the same damned things right here at home. An upswing in police militarization, the scathing revelation of extensive domestic surveillance, including journalists and editors, and the slow erosion of rights here in the United States would land us on that very same report.

It's hard to claim the high moral ground when you're doing some of the very same things your neighbors are doing, even as you're yelling at your neighbors for doing them.

ah, so the only time we take time out from killing brown Muslims is when Christian people are killing Muslims. Then we kill the Christians. You'd probably be better served by saying "I made a stupid comment" rather than continuously trying to justify the stupid.

Ya know Haliburton is an amazing business. I'm a West Virgian (not right now, living in Baltimore) and I spent most of my career caring for young men injured in the coal mines. When I was practicing in the northern portion of the state, natural gas was discovered amongst the coal reserves and Halliburton labeled vehicles were everywhere.

I had a couple of patients who were Halliburton employees up from Oklahoma. They were more than happy to describe their tactics in taking mineral rights from poor mountain folk for pennies on the dollar.

Joking about how Halliburton takes advantage of brown people is funny but they are more than happy to Fark the whitest of white to make a nickel or two.

They are the epitome of 'evil corporation' that many movies try to ape.

Kind of missing the point. The April report was by the State Department, yes. However, the Secretary of State (the guy running the State Department - that's important here) took a more diplomatic stance and had actually worked with Venezuela to start a dialogue.

Diplomacy, as I said, is more than just saying "nice doggy" until you can find a rock, and Kerry was actively pursuing a diplomatic avenue that Power just neatly destroyed. Power, by taking a more aggressive stance, undermined the statements and efforts made by the Secretary of State. In terms of our relationship with Venezuela, she essentially tanked the State Department's efforts to make progress. That's made fairly clear in the article, too. Venezuela was willing to work with Kerry, but Power hosed that pretty effectively. There's nothing contradictory in the point that I made - the situation needed a soft touch, and she came in like a hammer, shattering what could've been some real progress with Venezuela. She used buzzwords from a State Department report, which was fairly inflammatory, to back her play - something that the Secretary of State himself managed to avoid.

I would hope that Power just lost her posting to the UN.  If you publicly and totally undermine something the Secretary of State himself was working on, you have no business whatsoever being an ambassador.
