This is actually the sort of thing I might expect from someone in Nanjing.  They have never been the same since 1937.

So, midway through the investigation cops watched him repeatedly steal a bunch of books, then asked the shop owner to check their inventory, and THEN decided to try to catch him in the act?

While we're on the subject of Chinese books, I find Kongming's commentaries on The Art of War to be an effective thing to read when you're trying to look menacing in a public place. I spent three hours reading it at the auto detail shop to assure the idiots there to finish the repairs on my Scion they were supposed to have completed a week earlier.

"I couldn't comprehend the meaning of life," the thief confessed. "I was hoping to find the answer by reading those books."

I think that should become a Buddhist Kone.  The meaning is in the search.
