I was a Rotarian for years. The major goal of the Rotary Club was the elimination of polio (secondarily to eating lunch at Ryan's Steakhouse once a week, of course) throughout the world. If I remember correctly, Polio had been completely eradicated until a couple of Africans in some of the very last unvaccinated villages decided vaccination was the white man's attempt to make their children infertile and decided it had to be stopped. As a result, the disease found a new foothold and made a huge comeback just weeks before it was wiped off the face of the earth.

I found this very sad. If it wasn't for that there would have been an entire generation of Africans to continuously shiat out enormous numbers of children they couldn't feed while infecting one another with super-AIDS while macheting one another under the rule of a despotic warlord completely leg brace free.

Ah, Africa, you are truely a parasite laden, super disease incubating, self destructing shiathole. Good for you, good for you.

Oh, FFS... trolltastic headline and article are trolltastic.

The vaccine works... on 999,999 out of 1,000,000 people.  The 1 unlucky person actually  gets polio from the vaccine.  Not just any vaccine, but cheap oral vaccine.. because the cheap oral ones use live polio cells.  Injections use dead cells and carry no such risk... but these are poor people so cost matters.

THAT is where these cases are coming from... and as the article said, its 73 cases out of  millions upon millions of people.

Not even worth the electricity used to host the damn link.  What a waste of time.

Where the hell did they get the horses??

See, when a mommy horse and a daddy horse love each other very much, the daddy horse will sometimes try to jump over the mommy horse from behind, but he won't make it all the way.

Then a baby horse comes out of the mommy a few months later.  That's where the horses come from.

BTW a REAL 'Crippled pirate' is in reality a comical sex act in which a man getting a blowjob shoots his load into a woman's eye, causing her to reach up and cover her eye like a patch. He then kicks her in the shin causing her to hop on one leg and scream arggggg!

I'm sure the natural beauty of the place is astounding, but there are lots of beautiful places in the states I'd still like to see. Places without killer viruses that make you bleed your guts out and with fewer machete murders.

I'm not looking at you LA.

It's amusing to see how many people disparage Africa as a whole, while completely disregarding that the near entirety of the continent has been the target of the most long-term ruthless pillaging and looting of resources in the history of...history.  Aside from South Africa and 'maybe' Egypt, no nation on that continent has been spared that methodical raping and pillaging by Western and Eastern nations outside of Africa.

They've been farked over so long and so hard that it's practically expected and assumed to be par for course when Western influences get involved in Africa.

It's quite seriously like having several football teams invade a lady's home, rape her endlessly, loot her home for anything of value and do so for several years without respite or mercy...and then have her neighbors wander by and condemn her for her promiscuity.

I've never understood the smug, 'Libertarian' smear of comparing Somalia to Libertarian philosophy.  I guess it makes the average, dull-minded Internet liberal to feel smart.  Somalia actually has a government (admittedly not very powerful) that does all the things governments do.  It also has islam, and plenty of it.  That means it has laws too in the areas outside of the legitimate government's control.  They're called sharia (i.e. Islamic) laws and they have their own courts.  There's plenty of 'government'!

Other than that, the so-called lawless regions of Somalia aren't really any different from the American frontier wilderness from the mid 1600's to the late 1800's.  The only difference is that we didn't have islam.  And that region was NEVER anything like Somalia is today.  So there's no comparison.

My point is that Libertarian philosophy and sharia law don't mix, so it's silly to compare them.

It also helps to not burn down all the farms that were creating your food.  Also not smashing all the free medicine that was helping your people.  Burning down all your trees to make charcoal to sell.  Etc.

You know.. at some point the population has to catch a clue about some of these things.

You realize, of course, that pretty much every continent -- including Africa and Europe -- spent most of its history fighting itself, with one faction invading, looting, and pillaging another faction whenever the opportunity arose.  Europe has been at that internally for basically all of its recorded history up until the end of WWII.

...so yea, if decades or centuries of war, rape, and pillage really did permanently ruin a place, Europe would be pretty much uninhabitable by now.

Polio hasn't ever had a chance of being wiped off the face of the earth so far, regardless of what has been done in Africa.  There are still a number of areas in New Guinea that still host Polio.  It isn't because they refuse to be vaccinated--it is because they have never been visited by any modern health worker of any kind.

I think you're probably remembering it wrong, and they said polio was already well in decline when the Salk vaccine began being used, because it's true.

And just for fun:

In 1977, Dr Jonas Salk, who developed the first polio vaccine, testified along with other scientists that mass inoculation against polio was the cause of most polio cases throughout the USA since 1961. (Science 4/4/77 "Abstracts" )

Yep.  Such a thorough understanding of the politics and fragmentation that keep the Somalian government from being able to access all areas of its own country to provide healthcare.  Also such a deep understanding of the factions that keep doctors as hostages when they try to enter some regions of Somalia.  If this guy is a representative, Hubby and I will NEVER join a rotary club.  This guy seems as sharp as a 20-year old badly used rotary cutter.

Well... the real reason for Africa being in the state it is in, is 100% because of malaria and other nasty diseases.  Invading cultures found the conditions to be unacceptable, so they did their deeds and then left.  Every other place on earth, the invaders slaughtered the natives wholesale and established permanent settlement.  The same thing would have happened to Africa.  People just didnt like getting killed by mosquito's on a regular basis.

It was never totally eradicated as a few cases kept creeping up in Nigeria and Pakistan.  Now I believe it may be crossing the border back into Afghanistan as the extremists are not allowing their children to get the vaccine.  They are even killing some of the volunteers involved with giving out the vaccine, though I don't know if any were Rotarians.

Because Polio is often transmitted through dirty surface drinking water, Rotary not only gives out the vaccine but spends hundreds of thousands to build clean drinking wells all over.  The last project my club helped out on was in Antigua.

Bill Gates and Warren Buffet are big supporters of Polio Plus through the Rotary Foundation

Is it the "same thing"?  No, of course not, every war or occupation is unique.  And yes, I'm sure a suitably-motivated person could go on for well over 20 minutes explaining the various differences.  ...but if you were one of the peasants -- the people who, in aggregate, really determine the course of the various cultures -- who were getting robbed or killed by the invaders (whatever the looked like), those academic subtleties would probably matter very little.

In any case, nod in superiority if you will, but also do try to think -- for just a moment -- what it might be like to be a (say) tribal sheep-herder seeing a Roman legion coming over the hill to enslave your village and take your valuables back to Rome, and then think how it's "not so bad" because at least they don't have khakis, pith helmets, and rifles.

utah dude: delicious sv40 cancer virus. delicious.

1/10 trolling.

Oral vaccine costs $0.40, very effective at lifetime prevention of a crippling disease, with extremely rare (albeit tragic) vaccine-derived polio. No SV40 for decades, and NCI doesn't even think it causes cancer in humans.

Benefit > risk, benefit >cost for every population, even factoring in vaccine-derived disease.

Or hey, if the Romans are too far back, you could always replace "tribal sheep-herder" with (say) "Polish citizen", "Roman legion" with "Wehrmacht regiment", and "back to Rome" with "back to Berlin".  The rest pretty much still works.

Whichever particular conqueror you prefer, one part of Europe has been occupying and colonizing some other part of Europe for a very, very long time.

You're making my point and you don't even really grasp it yet.

The pillaging of Europe and Asia and 'most' of the Americas ended a long while back.  Africa, on the other hand, remains a free-for-all for most industrialized nations.

In short, the bad times in Europe with the pillaging and looting, it sorta STOPPED after a lil while.  And then, instead of looting each other, they started looting and pillaging Africa and really, they're still doing it, to this day.  Albeit with less actual rape and more looting and pillaging, but there it is.
