I don't really have anything to add here, just that I liked this story a lot.

That isn't just a shih tzu, that is a shih tzu mix.

/The coat is shih tzu, the face isn't.

This, the muzzle is too long. They're often mixed with terriers like Yorkies and such.

Yeah, not to be Johnny Raincloud, but this. I have a Shih Tzu, and Goldie looks more like my other dog, a Maltese/Pekinese mix. Still a cute story, nevertheless.

1-year later: "Mom, all the neighborhood cats keep telling me I'm not a dog... And we compared ears and tails and they can bark like me..... Am I adopted?"

According to the article they're not related in any way.  Thanks for clearing that one up, Daily Mail.

I'm really glad that they went together. It's unfortunate to realize that some people don't know or care that animals bond with each other like they do with people. One of my good friends recently had to find homes for her 3 cats due to her son developing an allergy to them all of a sudden. She was able to find someone to take all 3 thankfully. I jokingly told her to get rid of her kid cause the cats were allergic.

I had to say goodbye to my old 23 year old cat last night. I've been prepared for it as she's been getting older and more fragile, but it was still pretty terrible. Thank you for this subby. This helped a bit.

/now I want a kitten.

Yes, so wonderful that you had your beloved cat so many years and have wonderful memories that you can treasure.  I think it makes it harder to say goodbye however since you miss them even greater when you've had them so long and you can't remember life when you did not have your best friend.  I'm going through that myself. On June 27, I had to say goodbye to my beloved almost 17 year old golden retriever.  I adopted her when she was 3 and she was remarkably healthy until a couple of months before she died when she began eating less and had increasing difficulty with walking.

That's great you expressed desire to adopt a kitten.  Best wishes to you.

Thanks for that eldie. So sorry to hear about your doggie.

I'm kind of rethinking my urge for a new kitten today. I know there are so many pets who need homes but I didn't expect to feel so guilty about having to let my old cat go. I know it's not at all realistic to expect to be able to keep a cat alive forever, but I feel like I let her down at the end. I spent half my life caring for and being responsible for the health of this little animal so its going to take awhile to accept that I couldn't do anything more for her.

The vet was very kind and did say that she had never met a 23 year old cat before, and that I should feel proud at having taken such good care of her, which was nice to hear. But damn, this part of being a pet owner sure does suck.

I'm sure in time I'll want some kitten energy in my life again.

Yes, this is a very difficult part of being a pet owner, although there are so many joys also.  I've had three dogs in my life, and Buttercup (my dog that just died) is the first time that I had to make the decision to put her down.  I was hoping to have her around longer, but the last couple of days of her life she was unable to walk and began to have diarrhea.  I was willing to care for her in that condition, but I told myself if she began to experience pain I could not let her suffer.  Well the night before I had to put her down, she began to have bloody diarrhea and began screaming out in pain.  I just did not want her to live like that and suffer, so I had to bring her in to the vet.

It is quite normal for us to feel guilty for making that decision, although it was probably the right thing to do.  It just takes time to sort this out and work through our grief.  Best wishes again.

eldie & Max Awesome, you both did right thing & now at least Max may be on Guilt Trip.  Not warranted because it was right thing.  You'll both be welcome on Caturday, weekly thread here, if you choose to check in there. It's still open at the moment, tho you may be flummoxed by number of posts.
Right Time will come again for both of you, as I typed above.
