You can't catch fire.  Anyone who made the difficult transition from Super Dodgeball to Street Fighter II knows that.

It's a bit more reluctant Spartacus than Battle Royale this time around.

I am a fan of the movie "Battle Royal". "Royal" was about the individual struggles of the participants while "The Hunger Games" is a parody of reality TV and class struggle. The "Hunger Games" books make it really obvious with Katniss's internal dialogue.

I had never read the books, and knew virtually nothing going into three first movie, but I found it to be a fairly compelling storyline.

So sue me, I really liked it.

taxandspend: Looks good. It'll be a shame when the 3rd and 4th movies suck because the final book in the trilogy blows balls.

I think it could make a good movie (not sure about 2 though). It's pretty weird stuff really, and crazy dark for something people call a young adult novel.

Are they actually make the last book into 2 movies?  I could kind of see the need, but I'm not sure how good it will be either way.  I will agree that the third book just wasn't that great.  It was dark and depressing which normally wouldn't turn me off, but it just seemed so different than the other 2 in terms of tone.  Some of it I understand why and we all knew it was leading there, but there's just something about it that didn't do it for me.  Perhaps removing all the internal monologues of Katniss obsessing over boys and whatever else will make it better...  Either way I'm excited for Catching Fire although I'm kind of questioning some of the casting decisions, but I might be pleasantly surprised - Jenna Malone in particular seemed like an odd choice to me.

PillsHere: Are they actually make the last book into 2 movies?

Yes they are, but I doubt it's less about "need" and more about "how can we make more money off of this franchise?" Of the three books though I guess I liked the second the best. The first one did feel too much like a Battle Royale knockoff but the second is pretty interesting, The third has nothing to do with Battle Royale at all and I have no idea what even to compare it to.

The third book is a war novel. Plain and simple. It even has Katniss dealing with PTSD in the end with her emotional battle scars.

I like POV novels and all, but I had the same problem with the third book as I did the last Harry Potter. If you are going to stick us with one character's point of view, put that character in the places where the plot is occurring, sheesh.

I thought the most heroic character in the books was Katniss's mom, who she never bothers to name and treats with contempt most of the time.

Well, she basically froze after her husband's death and made Katnis support the entire family.

Well according to Katniss. From what she describes though, her mom is pretty much the only doctor in the district and routinely saves people's lives without payment. It's not bad writing, I can imagine a girl like that disliking her mother, but no one else seems to have a bad word to say about her.

Yeah, but after her husband's death, she basically frozed up and didn't do anything anymore.  She basically just sat there like a veg.  It was only towards the upcoming Hunger Game that she started to snap out of it and start working again and helping out the family.  At least that is what I seem to recall from the book.

Since they left a bunch of relatively important things out of the first movie, probably to save time and/or budget, I hope they make up for it in the second since it likely got a good boost to the budget.

Looks good, will see it eventually.

Did they? I don't even think President Snow was IN the first book except maybe as a mention or two. He shows up at the end I think. And they put in scenes of districts rioting that also were not in the first book. The movies seem to be giving us a larger view of things. In the book all you ever see is what Katniss sees. That Peeta sure is a dork.

I guess i meant you miss a lot of the internal dialogue and details that they just sort of jump cut over. They also skipped out on showing as much of the dogs and in the movie didn't get any sort of sense of who the other combatants were.

I don't recall if Snow was in the first book or not, it's been a couple years but i did rewatch the movie on Netflix and even with my petty gripes, it is still decent i was just hoping for a little more.

Have they actually said that they're splitting it into two movies to make more money, or are you just assuming based on some recent trends? I hope not because I agree the final book is bad. I wonder if this trilogy will be the young-adults version of the Godfather Trilogy -- Fierce debate over whether 1 & 2 is the better movie, with no mention of the 3rd.

Nothing they can really do about the internal dialogue, I guess Jennifer Lawrence can look pensive or puzzled or confused or whatever but that's always been a problem when adapting books to movies. That's why so many Stephen King movies suck, he's all about the internal dialogues.

But the first book to me really wasn't very fleshed out anyway. The world comes more into focus in the second, and the third is just crazy monkeyballs. I felt after watching the movie that I understood that universe better than when I finished the first book, but hey, your mileage may vary.  They didn't overplay the romance either which was nice, in the books Katniss really can't be bothered with all that crap except for the cameras.

There's a lot of serious stuff going on in the YA world these days. Apparently publishers are more willing to take risks on offbeat and genre stuff in that realm, so authors have more room. As a bonus, the success of genre stuff in that realm is opening up literary fiction and helping bridge the divide there.

The books are mostly good, I do recommend them. I do think the ending is rushed, and that the third book dodges dealing with the fallout of what happens in what to me was a really disappointing way. Of course, dealing with it properly might have required a 4th book, so yeah, that might have been an issue, but still, I don't think the ending was really tied up very well.

It probably didn't help that I had read a book that HAD dealt with the rage and helplessness of loss and the fact that things don't end, they just move on right beforehand. The Magicians by Lev Grossman, highly recommended. The ending of that book wasn't quite an ending either (in fact, it's going to be a trilogy as soon as he releases the third book, which was supposed to come out sometime this year, but has been pushed to 2014, though he wrote the first to stand alone), but it grappled with the grief and fallout rather than trying to sidestep it.

Anyway, apart from the ending, the Hunger Games books were good. Nailed me to my chair. I liked the movie too, and it was mostly shot in North Carolina, so I had to see it, as a proud (well, not so much these days) native of Best Carolina. We're still better than the other Carolina, at least.

If you think this post was rambling, it might help you to know that I'm a little drunk.

They admitted to that, and Suzanne Collins said she liked it. Movies can't do internal dialogue very well, but they can do dramatic irony well, cutting to different people plotting against each other in different settings. The different mediums tell the story in different ways.

(It ripped off Battle Royale 1 approximately as much as the aforementioned rips off of Running Man. Similar basic concept does not equal ripping off)
