No one is forced to play football. I doubt the dogs have the same options.

Getting picked last at recess every day can have long lasting ramifications too.

Okay, drown his ass in a bucket with an extension cord wrapped around his neck then.

Next you'll compare Lambeau Field to the Circus Maximus.

At least that comparison would be somewhat apt.

And his argument is rendered invalid, easy peasy, nice n easy.

The only valid point he makes is limiting the amount of hits players take every year, they do at every level except college.

Yep. Just drove by Nick Saban's house. Seen them kennels out back. Got this biggun where he keeps the d-linemen. Feeds 'em walk-ons what get mouthy bout wind sprints and the like. He's got this one, linebacker by the look of him, chained in the front yard. Sumbiatch jes' lies there all day, not a care in the world, but that there mailman in the Auburn hat come round, hoo boy! He's up like lightning! I keep tellin' Nick, I say, Nick, you know that ol' boy out there's gonna kill that there mailman one of these days and he jes sits there, smilin, polishin' his crystal football collection....

I kind of wish universities would spin off their football and basketball programs into independent entities that have a licensing agreement to use the school name and trademarks. Or go completely in the opposite direction and eliminate all recruiting and athletic scholarships. Whatever kids show up to your school and try out are the ones you're stuck with. The current system lets the tail wag the dog so to speak, with too much time and attention given by the schools to athletic matters. On the other hand, without the support of sidewalk fans, many states would eliminate all support for higher education. For the "we don't need no fancy book lernin'" crowd, athletics gives them a reason to support schools.

Look, I like american football ( albeit less and less since Junior Seau offed himself and seeing kids die ) but last time i checked- no dog got a free ride to a degree just for being in a fight.
Personally, I hate the way the ncaa treats kids as just pawn on their way to potentially huge assloads of cash, a minor league for the nba and the nfl. Its wrong. Everybody knows its wrong, and those with the bucks coming in dont give a got damn thing about it.
But dog fighting, or cock fighting, or bear baiting is evil, plain as day.
what the ncaa is not evil, its just getting over on folks, in the  fine tradition of snake oil salesfolks since time began and one guy convinced another that a shiny rock was worth more than food. And his mate would agree. ...
Yes, i do feel rather strongly on this issue and I am a Cat person .

Oh come on, no one kills the players when they are done with football...they do that on their own.

Sadly the DOGS that are forced against their will to fight and then are tortured/killed after they lose are still smarter then the village idiots that are well paid top play football. I will no longer have any sort of empathy or pity for anyone that makes a lot of $$$ to play a childs game and then has the nerve to complain about their injuries as they are cashing their big paychecks.

The NFL cares about as much for the players as fighting dog owners care about their dogs. For how long did they deny that getting wacked on the head caused any sort of injuries till they were pretty much forced to and then tried to make some PR out of it?
Or how they can stop the rampant steroid use with just requiring all athletes to be tested before the games?
At least the dog owners don't demand the public pay for over half their sporting venues.

Not to mention the dogs fight to the death, don't get glorified by the canine population, and don't get top shelf biatches at their beck and call.  Even knowing the things we know, who among us guys wouldn't trade our humdrum lives for that of a college football player?

I agree, sounds like the whining of a guy picked last in kickball.

"...a child's game"

American football did not start out as a child's game. Its a sport for grown men that eventually children started to play. (same with baseball by the way, and basketball) Children play with toy guns, does that mean war is a child's game in your mind too?

Frankly, the fact that the nation has deemed it acceptable for children to play football in the first place is a major problem and squarely where Gladwell was going with his statement.

In 20-30 years, parents who let their kids play today's version of American football will be thought of in no better light than dog fighters anyways. Brutal, barbaric and low class.

That is interesting, saw a pretty slickly made Pop Warner ad during the Arena Football game last night..... maybe their "last hurrah" before that sentiment catches up with them?

It's interesting that at a time when the NFL and NCAA are richer and more powerful than ever, youth football is seeing a large decline in participation. I suspect that change of view has already happened in the upper socioeconomic groups and is slowly filtering down to the middle class. People might be ok with adults beating the crap out of each other for a long time to come but without the farm system of youth sports feeding into it, the quality of NFL and NCAA programs will decline, as will their power.

This is probably why savvy NFL owners are pushing not just for stadiums paid for by the public but also for all the stadium's operating income. If the teams lose popularity, the owner will still have a nice revenue stream from concerts, Disney on Ice, monster trucks, and everything else that takes place in "their" stadium.
