It often seems the more repressed, the more bizarre the porn.

No, she should have held it in

The problem with these Inheritance laws is that the penalize the wrong person. Why should the bastard child bear the sin of their father/mother? It makes no sense. If one wants to genuinely "protect the integrity of the family" the better solution is to simply insist on state mandated sterilization for anyone who leaves their spouse. If the parties are presently unmarried the old fashioned expedite of a shotgun works wonders.

The fact of the matter is that these politicians are simply trying to score political points by making helpless innocents suffer rather than addressing real issues.

I am curious if the 'past' in question goes back to pre WW II, or pre Meiji restoration. Sounds like something MacArthur stuck into their constitution...

Well, she's famous, so she'll get a pass. When I lived there, I told my Japanese friends that in the US, my boyfriend and I shared an apartment, and they were shocked that my parents "let me" do that. Both of them were in college, and they both lived at home. An out-of-wedlock baby is shameful to the entire family. However, those attitudes are starting to change, little by little.

Yeah...Japanese folks don't really cut the apron strings until they're in their late 30s.

I guess they expected Miki to do the proper Japanese thing and go to the rediisu kurinikku.

Ever wonder why Japan's rate of out-of-wedlock births hasn't gone up much in 50 years?  Considering they only legalized The Pill in 1999 and just discovered condoms sometime last Tuesday?  Abortions.  And a few shotgun marriages.  Dekichatta kekkon in Japanese.  They Already Did It Marriage.

That's exactly what the world needs!  More power to the state to control the lives of individuals and maybe a nice acceptable doorway to "justifiable" eugenics while you're at it!

Then you're remarkably ignorant of Japanese history. Japanese attitudes toward illegitimacy have probably not changed in millenia, much like Japanese attitudes toward women.

indylaw: For a country that judgmental and sexually repressed, it's a wonder Christianity didn't catch there.

It's no wonder at all. Japanese religion (neither actually Shinto nor actually Buddhist) did everything for Japanese society that Christianity might have done. It validated the political hierarchy. It guaranteed a "better place" for those who did what they were supposed to. It did not blatently violate its own precepts. Likewise, Japan was sufficiently well-settled by the Japanese to make cultural destruction impractical for the Europeans. In its early years of spread, Christianity had doctrinal advantages over the Mediterranean and Germanic religions. You didn't have to be born noble or die in warfare to get a nice afterlife. Likewise, being born noble or dying in war did not mean you could avoid a nasty afterlife. Likewise, the deific entity of Christianity was "no respecter of persons". As far as the Christian God was concerned, even the Emperor or the King of the Goths was still just another sinful schmuck. From our standpoint, that's a "bad" thing to think, but when you look at it from the standpoint of cultures that said "If you were born a beggar's child, you are inherently immoral and inherently inferior in every single way to the children of the nobility", it's a revolutionary and democratizing ideal. I freely admit that, once Christianity became popular with the powerful, its tune changed, but early on, it was a revolutionary religion.

Fast-forward to contact between Japan and Europeans (the USA counts as Europeans). At that point, Christianites, being the religions of choice of the most powerful ethnic group on the planet, attracted several converts, but it only severely displaced local religions in areas where the Europeans pretty much obliterated the local culture.

So, it's no surprise at all that Japan didn't adopt Christianity.

This behavior is not surprising at all.  Then again, if you take a look at some of the people in the U.S., they would love to go back to mentality currently still popular in Japan.  In some ways Japan is leaps and bounds ahead of us such as with National Healthcare.  In other ways, they are thirty years to a century behind us, such as with attitudes on pornography and sexual equality.
I have a friend over there who is a divorced mother with three children.  She for some reason or another wants to come back to the states.  It's not like she doesn't have four year degree in a STEM program or anything.

That's the whole point of the tentacles, really. Porn manufacturers have to improvise because censorship laws don't allow them to show penises.

RexTalionis: For a country that created the genre of cartoon ladyboy tentacle rape porn, Japan is awfully sexually repressed.

Actually sexually the Japanese are pretty non-repressed.  In a lot of ways, less repressed than say America is.  On extra-marital affairs they're practically French.

That's entirely unconnected however with how important familial structure is.  They're pretty much medieval in that respect.  All families are registered with the town council office whenever they move, and if you ever look at a family register something like a divorce (or death) results in a scary looking big black X through the name on the record.

The difference between Japan and America is the attitude to abortions, and that parents still maintain enough authority over their adult children that they can force them into marriage.

In a country where you can still support an entire family on one working class wage and with almost no social welfare system, and the expectation you care for your elderly parents, strongly discouraging single motherhood still makes sense.
