It's affected what I eat a bit--I look for some of the lower-calorie things on the menu.  And then I get really depressed when the lowest calorie count is like 1100 calories.

2013-07-20 02:41:12 PM
fta A new study published in the American Journal of Public Health on July 18 shows that providing people with a calorie guide has no effect on their food choices, even when calories are displayed directly next to items on the menu.

To be fair, the calorie count is less important because most people select from McDonald's gluten-free, no-carb, vegan menu.

You could draw this conclusion from seeing how many people actually go up and read that 2' x 3' wall of text  (font size: 2px)  they've had up for years thanks to the FDA...

If you're eating mcdonalds, you've already settled on "Fast" rather than "Healthy".. let's just be honest.

McDonalds is an addiction. And those damned things are everywhere.

What's the difference? No one lives forever and all anyone does on this site is complain that the oldsters should just up and die for the good of humanity anyway, so I would think this would be welcome news.

The important thing is not that we are leaving McDonalds, but that we are being given the information which the consumer will make an informed choice for their eating habits. California didn't pass the law which would have required labeling of any food product as genetically modified, thanks to Monsanto lobbying. Restaurant industries as well want you to not know what you are putting into your body, because they know there are people who would frequent their establishment less or not at all, if they were given the proper information and the industry doesn't want that. Fight for the information and use it; but once you have it, it's your own responsibility as it's your own body.

It has nothing to do with being incapable of doing math, it's all about the instinct to gorge on fatty salty food to prepare for the winter.  The instant gratification outweighs the rational long term health concerns.

Having lost some weight and feeling much happier about my general health, I'm far less tempted to scarf down a fat burger these days, but the instinct is still there.

I don't know why anyone is surprised by this.  Everyone knows that Mcdonalds food is full of fat and salt and high in calories.  That's why they're eating there.

Of course not. Those are meaningless numbers.

You wanna make those numbers mean something? Maybe also include a small chart in the back like this one or this one, showing "If you are a 180 man, to burn off just one Big Mac (550 cal.), you'll have to

...do high-impact aerobics for one hour
...go hiking (with pack) for one hour
...row a canoe for one hour
...bicycle at 12mph for one hour
...go running at 5mph for one hour
...play soccer for one hour (and not as the goalkeeper)

etc.

The Tobacco industry figured this out decades ago. Once they have imprinted their advertising and marketing in your brain, there's no such thing as bad news.

Telling people that tobacco, alcohol and junk food are PURE DEATH only pushes the goods all the more effectively.

The efforts of the medical world to warn you are subverted by your brain into even more effective reminders of your cravings. Even graphic pictures of the damage caused by smoking or drunk-driving will only trigger stress circuits that will make you want a smoke or a drink.

In this case, silence is not death. Except to the advertising and marketing plans of the death-dealing corporations and their political stooges and tools.

The only thing that might work is generic packaging which is the same as any other "inferior" unadvertised brand and which can not be used in commercials or promotions of any kind. You have to break the circuits that advertisers and propagandists use. Reveal them and break them at the same time, without triggering them.

Fear is an even better marketing tool than pleasure. It works subliminally and thus is harder to get at with mere reason, logic, facts, and truthfulness. It has self-defence mechanisms galore because it was a vital and life-promoting machine during our evolution. It is now the contrary in many cases, and all the more dangerous because it is effective beyond reason or thought.

In the alcoholic's brain: ALCOHOL IS KILLING ME. I NEED ANOTHER DRINK TO FORGET THIS.

The same flaws in the human brain are used by political and religious organizations to indoctrinate us and manipulate us.

Thank God for MAD magazine. It did a better job of uncorrupting the minds of youth than any of the movements that have been working alongside it for sixty years now. Humour is the antidote for many evils, and groundless fear is one of them.

I'm a 180lb man and had an Egg McMuffin and hash brown prior to a two hour mountain bike ride this morning.  I wasn't so much concerned with burning it off as I was with fueling my ride.

McDonalds does better for calorie count than a lot of the other fast food and dining places.

One large caramel milkshake at Wendys is over 1000 calories alone.

Fat, lazy a-holes with no willpower.

I've seen that picture so many times - what *is* that? I mean, I assume by now that it must be some kind of meat (although the first time I saw it, I thought it was icecream, or some sort of industrial foam). But even if it is meat - then either the colorization of the picture is way off, or it is some kind of meat that really isn't meat. Meat doesn't have that color. And it doesn't get packaged like that, right?

Right?

Anyone who feigns disgust at the idea of eating a Big Mac also tends to:

1. Own a TV but haven't turned it on in years
2. Drink microbrewery beer
3. Watch Japanese children's cartoons on a Mac
4. Appreciate the warmth of vinyl phonograph records
5. Read books at Starbucks
6. Claim to prefer girls with small breasts
7. Make snide remarks about Wal-Mart.
8. Walk past a smoker and force pretentious coughing noises
9. Take comfort in believing size doesn't matter
10. Ride a bike to work wearing spandex stretch trousers

I've never gone to a McDonald's without knowing exactly what I was there to get before I got there. Handing me a flyer when I enter would make no difference at all. I don't think this study is worth much.

--- I remember when I was a teen in the early 80's the pices were paper with tearable sides then you unfolded it.
I saw an employee drag a friggin TRASH BAG FULL of pieces across the floor behind the counter and I remember wanting to bash everyone and steal the bag. But how far would I get on a BMX bike and a fat bag?!

Does a hamburger at McDonalds have more calories than a hamburger anywhere else?  I doubt it.  Besides, you can have salad and tea there, if you want.

I've never understood the leftist/marxist obsession with McDonalds.  Why don't Ben & Jerry partner with Moochelle Obama and create a competing fast food chain that serves the items that liberals demand Americans eat?  Like, why not do THAT?  If 'you know best', then it should be a huge, money-making bonanza and everybody wins!

If I'm going to indulge in food that's bad for me, it better be worth it and McDonald's is NOT worth it.  I was happy when they started putting this information on websites and menus for various restaurants because there was some stuff that I didn't realize was as bad as it was.  Of course McDonald's doing it is irrelevant to me because I haven't eaten there in years and I'm frankly surprised that anyone would eat that slop.

2013-07-20 03:18:37 PM
A few years back got together with an old childhood best friend.  He lever made it out of our hometown, and I have lived all over the country.  At one point he was like "I don't give a f*** about no fancy food.  McDonalds is good enough for me!"  Later that night we got into a fist fight.  No, not about food. Yes, whiskey was involved. I've never talked to that asshat since.  To be honest though, the reason I don't ever go to McDonalds any more is because I like a cold beer with my burger!  That, and if I craved that fast food flavor I could just eat a booger.
