This is sad. She was a great lady. Read her book, it's good.

The only female member.
There have been some feminists in the corps since then.

Female?  I had my doubts as to her species.  I thought she was an envoy from the Lizard People.

I vaguely remember her....didn't she say something offensive about the jews and she was removed from her post as a result?

People should retire before they get old, get Alzheimer's, and start saying things they'll regret.

I almost submitted this with a moist headline but saw it was already on the mainpage

Helen Thomas, invented modern 'journalism' by spending an entire career yelling questions at Presidents.

Unless they cremate her she will most definitely be moist when she reaches the Livor Mortis stage of decomposition.

Well you know how Jews are. She probably complained about stale bagels or something and they blew out of proportion.

No longer moist. Now, arid & dry. And I would imagine, hard as concrete.

Oh, I'm sure.

WTF Indeed: Helen Thomas, invented modern 'journalism' by spending an entire career yelling questions at Presidents.

Yeah, the POTUS and the Press Secretaries love being yelled at. That's why they always called on her for first question, until Dubya, who was just too enlightened to handle it.

Bslim: raerae1980: I vaguely remember her....didn't she say something offensive about the jews and she was removed from her post as a result?

Well you know how Jews are. She probably complained about stale bagels or something and they blew out of proportion.

She was interviewing a Rabbi, and told him the Jews should get out of Israel and go back to Poland and Germany, she also made a statement that Obama was worse than Nixon when it came to trying to control the press and called out his administration on what she perceived as its lack of transparency .  These couple of things piled on to all of her anti-Israeli stance during the Bush administration sent her into a forced retirement as no media outlet would hire her.

"Tell them to get the hell out of Palestine." and "Remember, these people are occupied and it's their land. It's not German, it's not Poland..." When asked where Israeli Jews should go, she replied they could "go home" to Poland or Germany or "America and everywhere else. Why push people out of there who have lived there for centuries?"

Debate on Israel is closed.

and how about more creative fark headlines instead of one's pulled from the actual link.

I realize fark mods hate the south and the "way things used to be" attitude. but sometimes the way things used to be would be so much better.

y'all remember when submitted headlines on fark were creative, snarky and fun

She got a little enamored of her own eccentricities towards the end of her career, although so does everyone who lives past 80. Hell, I'm in my 30s and I already think I'm just the cutest goddamn thing with all my quirks.

But I'll say this for her--every time she opened her mouth, she made some truly awful people so mad they could barely speak. And I don't just mean on the Internet, although site-Googling her on Fark is an object lesson in the kind of sputtering rage you get when trolls actually get angry. I mean in real life.

Remember the fuss when the Bush White House ended the informal tradition of letting her end presidential press conferences? I mean, not by getting the final question, just by having the privilege of saying thank you on behalf of the press corps? And they  literally moved her from the front to the back row? That was Ari Fleischer's doing. Now, Fleischer could probably troll me into tears with one hand tied behind his back. He's a cool, confident, smart motherfarker. And Thomas scared the shiat out of him. Hell, I bet if you polled American Jews today, she'd beat him in a popularity contest, and this was a woman who never got comfortable with the existence of the state of Israel.

So here's to you, Helen. Not perfect, not even great, but you made shiatty people look shiatty (and are doing so even in death). Not bad.
