fta :  Aaron, 79, missed a call from his alarm company Sunday night and asked a neighbor to check his house Monday morning,

Yeah... Mr Aaron- you might consider a new monitoring company if they dont dispatch the damn cops if you miss a call.

Why does everyone assume Hank was clean, anyway? Steroids have been used in sports since the 50s

Again, what makes you think Hank and the others weren't cheating? I am pretty sure Aaron and Mayes have admitted to using amphetamines (which are a PED). And hell, Maris was likely on 'roids during the 61 season (balding at age 26, short temper, etc)

Considering building muscle was all that they thought steroids would do then I don't see how anyone would find them useful since in baseball a muscular body structure was thought to hinder your swing. Tone is one thing but muscles or huge upper body was considered a downside to a player, a hitters wrists have more to do with power than their body and Aaron had quick wrists.

Also Hank, move out of SWATS I don't care what the city tells you, the place is a shiathole.

Weights and baseball is an interesting topic. Back when people that grew up pre WWII was playing baseball(so like 1950s on back) they did hard like farm work that was probably equivalent to weight lifting growing up back in the ye olde times, and you had the batting averages and home runs similar to what we have now(90s to current) that weight lifting is pretty much universally accepted in baseball and some people do roids even.

In say the '60s-'80s  when people had the "weights are bad because the old timers didn't lift weights" attitude and they was worried about getting too bulky batting averages and home runs was low compared to earlier and later times, they didn't grow up doing hard work on a farm like the old timers and they didn't lift.

So anyways all evidence is weights are good.

Steroids aren't just for muscle, though. A long, 162-game season takes its toll on your body. Steroids help you recover from activities better (i.e. playing a 3 hour game of baseball every day) and thus, increase your performance that way.

Sad to hear.  HA is probably one of the classiest players in modern professional sports.  Had this happened to John Rocker; granted it would have been is 87 camero and a couple of boxes of camels, but still no one would feel too bad about that.

True, but you didn't have a plate appearance/HR numbers that jumped like this:
Year    PA     HR
1957    424    14
1958    637    28
1959    499    16
1960    578    39
1961    698    61
1962    687    33
1963    351    23
1964    584    26
1965    186    8
1966    391    13
1967    472    9
1968    340    5

If a player had done that in the 80s, 90s or 2000s, people would scream steroids. Steroids were used by players in the 60s, so why is Maris exempt from this?

Okay, this is weird:

The team returned to Atlanta, and on April 8, 1974, a crowd of 53,775 people showed up for the game-a Braves attendance record. The game was also broadcast nationally on NBC. In the fourth inning, Aaron hit career home run number 715 off Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Al Downing.[6] Although Dodgers outfielder Bill Buckner nearly went over the outfield wall trying to catch it, the ball landed in the Braves' bullpen, where relief pitcher Tom House caught it.

/At least it didn't roll between his legs. . .

That was not known back then, it was thought just to build muscle up and the thought was grown men get no use to have huge muscles and in baseball that's true to an extent. You need to elongate the muscle rather than make it denser, once exercises came into focus that helped elongate and steroids were known to help recovery they came into vogue. The big drugs from the 60s-80s was always amphetamines, at least until the bash brothers.

Because players didn't use roids back then no matter what you choose to believe, you could be kicked off teams for getting caught using them, coaches line of thought was they were bad for you. Ron Gant took shiat for it when he got big and his average took a hit but power numbers went up.

There was a pitcher in the early 70s, I forgot who, who said of the 7 pitchers on their team, he knew of 5 that were on steroids. Hell, NFL players were doing them in the 50s. It really isn't far-fetched for Maris to have been juicing. Back in the 50s and 60s, they really didn't think steroids were bad for you. Ron Gant played in the late 80s and 90s, so not sure how he is relevant.
