This performance, the loss against the Lions and the probability that Tony Abbott will be our next prime minister is enough to drive me to drink.

Ha ha. Already there.

I'm happy Root got a half-century.  He and Bresnan are both solidly in.  Just grind em out, 2-3 runs an over, let the bowlers have a full day off.

I get the feeling they will declare with about 5-10 overs left before tea or close to get a short spell at the Australian batsmen

Bresnan is out. Now will Root get a century?

2013-07-20 10:02:56 AM
I thought that Windies tie yesterday wiped me out, and here I am sitting in a warm room trying to watch two matches at once.
- Ooh they've got the ball cuffs out...

I'm watching the match and today's stage of the Tour

so if Root gets the century, will England just declare at that point?

WhyteRaven74: so if Root gets the century, will England just declare at that point?

Nah.  Make the Aussies stand around in the heat all day, play one over tomorrow, then declare.  Though I hope they told Root that after he gets the century he is free to just turn around and slap the bails off, so he can get some time back in the cool.

It's only 71 degrees in London today.

I think they'll want 450 after that New Zealand experience.

Or maybe I've got that backwards. New Zealand had too many runs and not enough time.

I say declare about six overs before close; new ball and fading light.

Given how Australia has been playing, I think England already has enough of a lead.

2013-07-20 10:39:30 AM
England would be happy with 450 and then declare with a session and a full day to bowl Australia out. The highest fourth innings run chase in test history is 418.

How do you dig someone out of a hole?  Isn't digging what makes a hole in the first place?

syrynxx: How do you dig someone out of a hole?  Isn't digging what makes a hole in the first place?

You dig a horizontal trench down to them, so they can get out, since their problem is the sides are too steep

I have a ticket for the first day of the Durham test. Glad it is the first day!

yeah people with tickets for fifth days at these tests might be getting a bit distraught

Cripes, forgot it was only day three. England would be happy with 650 and then declare with a day and a half to bowl Australia out. The highest successful fourth innings run chase in test history is 418.

The highest fourth innings run chase for a draw is 654.

Well the record at Lord's is 318-1. I'm not sure Australia has 318, let alone 400 plus in them

The great Australian twitter scandal has hit. It seems some on with access to the official Australian twitter account posted a very sweary tweet about the Bell catch.

Some one will get the sack for such a stupid thing

As for fourth innings chases, of the 10 highest totals in history only two were for wins, most were in matches that ended in draws.

No laughing! This is serious stuff. All the male cricket fans in Australia are preparing to cut off their gooleys, especially now that some bloke called Root has scored a ton against us.

2013-07-20 11:14:50 AM
And with a boundary for 4 Root gets a century

Hey it could be worse. Imagine the score if Australia hadn't had the luck of getting three wickets so fast.

2 innings and 2 centuries for England!

An Australian bowler could still rack up a century. Of runs against his bowling.

Now now, it's no time to be negative, it's not like Root is going to end up with a double century....today.

True. He has a whole, glorious, heatwave (snort) filled day tomorrow.

What gets me about them talking about playing in the heat, it's like they've never watched India play in Bangladesh, or vice versa, or Sri Lanka against India or vice versa? Last time I watched Sri Lanka playing India the temperature was somewhere near "Are you out of your mind?".

2013-07-20 11:32:28 AM
And that's how it's going for Australia, Root just sort of gets the edge on the ball, looking almost like he's about to go "oops, didn't want to do that" and gets a boundary.

It's just the commentators like Beefy Botham, who was drunk every time he batted in India or Sri Lanka, or some other third-world hell hole, like, OMG,  Perth, and who is now firmly ensconced in air-conditioned luxury. The rest of the English people complaining about the heat haven't had enough to drink yet.

there were a few of them wearing sweater vests earlier, though seems a couple at least took them off at tea or lunch

Yeah, England can bat until lunch tomorrow and give themselves a lead of 600, with 150 overs to bowl the Aussies out.  Can't disappoint the fans who have tickets for Monday, now, can we?

Let's have Root carry his bat all the way and get 200 before they declare.

I'm wondering why Australia hasn't asked for the new ball.

And Root is having his career best test innings.

Root and Bell are utterly fearless now - their RR is over 7 for the last 10 overs.  At this rate they'll have a lead of 600 by stumps tonight!

I think they will declare this afternoon.

it looks like Bell may well get a century and Root a double

Bell out on 74.  Do they declare now?
