global warming hysteria is just a series of begged questions

1. is it getting hotter?

2. is it natural or man-made?

3. is getting hotter for whatever reason a bad thing?

The stupid is the hyperextension of anthropomorphism being done by subby/author to make this very generic bit of data seem relevant.

28 years of higher temperatures than the averages worked out for before.  It's, it's Climate Change via the people who never learned the difference between Climate and Weather.  Or more importantly, the difference between human-scale and Earth-Scale.  This is just a particularly brilliant flash of utter contrivance.  And it'shiatting the same brain-notes as farking Revelations.

Hence, stupid.

Look at that S-car go.

I first noticed the seasons were getting a touch wacky in the early '90s (hey, I'm a weather geek). Mainly, it was the lack of winter in winter. Later, it was the unseasonable heat in spring and late fall. These days, it's getting six weeks of rain in one day, followed by three weeks of rain a week later. Did I mention the unusual increase in easterly winds?

The range of the oscillations can be debated, as can the causes. Not the frequency: Weather is getting harder to predict and seasons seem to get shuffled more often now. Thaws in January and frost in May/June do nothing but kill plants and make food more expensive, but the flooding is getting on my nerves, and I think the term "hundred-year flood" should be retired when they are coming every six or seven years.

Conservatives seem to have an eternal hard-on for Gore.

For most of the world he's a washed up American politician who made a movie once. For conservatives he is the anti-christ who somehow proves that the oil companies are right and that all the scientists in the world are lying.

Gore failed to check the condition of the axles before he hopped on a climate change bandwagon. His measure was taken with his "I invented the Internet" BS...nobody worthy of consideration takes him seriously.

Yes.

Depends on your point of view. Is it bad for the world environment that exists at this very moment? Sure, because it will change. But a new environmental standard will arise, and that environment will be just happy with the way things are.

The environmental standard could change just fine, no matter how bad global warming gets life of some sort will still exist.

The big question is, will we? And if we do, will the majority of us, or will it just be a few survivors? We're part of the current environmental standard, relying on the current environment. Just because life will go on, doesn't mean we will. If we don't go on, I would consider that a bad thing.

There have been life forms that have made themselves go extinct. I'm thinking quite heavily of the "oxygen holocaust", where life emitted oxygen that ended up poisoning much of that form of life. New forms of life, that were able to make use of the oxygen, or otherwise tolerate it, emerged.

LemSkroob:

2. is it natural or man-made? Undetermined.

Natural factors cannot account for the increase. The sun has not increased it's output, volcanoes haven't increased their output. What *DOES* fit observed reality is taking into account burning gigatons of carbon and a massive increase in agriculture.

No, it's not "undetermined."

3. is getting hotter for whatever reason a bad thing? Depends on your point of view. Is it bad for the world environment that exists at this very moment? Sure, because it will change. But a new environmental standard will arise, and that environment will be just happy with the way things are.

Given that we've more than tripled the human population in the last century, much of it in low-lying cities dependent on glacial meltwater and intensive agriculture in centuries-old farm belts, sudden climate change just *might* be an issue for modern humans.

Yeah, I've ever really understood that argument... Sure, the Earth would be just fine after a full-on nuclear war too, but Homo Sapiens might not enjoy the aftermath.

Yeah, it was quite a cold june here...

But it was really warm for most the year heading up to that point, so it all evens out.

People THOUGHT it was cold around here in April and May, but it's been way above average here all year round for about the last 3 years and people freaked out about merely being 'almost average'. They thought it was colder than normal. It wasn't.

It's been average to slightly below average around here since June. It feels freakishly cold. Still doesn't make up for the weeks of 85 degree weather in January when it was suppose to be mid 50s.

I'm a big fan of this climate change thingy.  I live in the Seattle area and we have started having real winters (snow instead of constant rain) and real summers (clear skies and hot sunny days that lasts longer than a week).  I think I'll go burn something to show my support.  And then do some charcoal grilling just because it's that kind of day and to further my support.

No doubt that as climates change some will change for the better. Where I live will probably do ok as well.

Personally I feel bad for those that will be getting seriously screwed by climate change. But that's just me..

According to the IPCC, future increases in infrastructure and global trade will allow those affected negatively to still get food at a reasonable price and the amount of actual arable land globally will not change.

There seemed to be no real negative effects when the globe as a whole is looked at, just localised changes which obviously will bother the NIMBYs who just fear change.
