Wait; if the guy was going 30 over the limit, and he drove for "almost a mile" before pulling over.... that would be for less than a minute with a 30 MPH limit, and under 40 seconds at 60 MPH limit; if it took him 10-20 seconds to realize the cop was not trying to pass him; I don't think it's that outrageous. I've looked for a public place to pull over rather than the side of a busy road when a cop was behind me before, I thought it was nice to the cop to not make him have to walk in traffic. Maybe not the most immediate pulling over but not exactly ignoring the cop and going about your business, not sure why his time to stop is a story, strikes me as a slow news day.

On July 7 the Okaloosa County Sheriff's deputy spotted 34-year-old Robert Earl Washington driving west on U.S. Highway 98 in Mary Esther at 30 mph over the speed limit. The deputy gave chase with his lights and siren on.

Washington turned onto Mary Esther Boulevard and drove almost a mile before turning onto Anchors Street and pulling into an empty parking lot.

Gawd knows there aren't any good spots to pull over on Highway 98. The crews haven't been out there to mow since Spring. Mary Esther Blvd isn't much better. You want me to block morning traffic on MEB? I have concern and respect for my fellow citizens, sir. Plus with all that noise you'll be shouting. Anchor Street is pretty quiet. I know there's an empty parking lot there. We can discuss your issues with me there.

Once heard this line from a guy who billed himself as the world's funniest Canadian:

"In Canada, a blue light means a snowplow.  In America, that's a police car."

*pause*

"Never forget the night I found that out.  I'm driving along at midnight and I see a blue light behind me and I think 'Snowplow!  I better speed up!' But it kept with me!  I got up to 100 and woke my buddy up.  'Look how fast this snowplow is going!  Ya think he's got the blade down?'"

Hmmm..30 mph over the limit..at night...and wouldn't pull over. If i was that cop, i would be going back over the route to see where he tossed all the drugs and guns out.

He said he didn't stop because he didn't know the deputy wanted him to pull over.

Let's assume that this guy didn't think the cop was trying to pull him over.

Why wouldn't he pull over to let the cop pass? Then when the cop pulls over behind you it should be obvious that he's pulling you over.

i've driven for a while with a cop behind me trying to pull me over.  i don't like to pull over to the side of a highway.  when possible, i try to make it to an exit and pull over off the highway.  i've watched too much footage of cars ramming into people on the shoulder of the highway.

/ however, i do slow down and put on my blinker.
// and when the cop approaches, i turn on the interior light, turn off the car, put the keys on the dash, and keep my hands on the wheel.  my other fear is getting shot by a cop.
/// you can tell me to pick up that can now, citizen.  sucks, but, i'm not going to piss off the cops and die for nothing.  while they are in the wrong, that's not a fight i want to pick.

Well, they do in some places.  I knew a Canadian who lives above the Arctic Circle for a while.  When out and about, you need a long gun at all times because of polar bears.

You wonder why he didnt want to pull over, he's a level 3 sex offender in Florida, which means if he goes to jail he ends up in the pokey.

Probably tired of having his booty hole rampaged.

/Way to go. As a former policeman, i have to say that when we pull you over ..esp at night...we have NO idea who you are..what you're up to, or if you are armed and willing to kill us to get away.  Anything you can do to make your hands visible and put the cop more at ease is appreciated.

i understand the fear.  I don't even like approaching my neighbor's houses, who I know.  can't imagine what it's like to approach a stranger or stranger's car (who you already suspect is up to no good).

since i'm only nervous about things that don't matter, I try to be the calm and predictable person whenever someone else has a gun.

It's reasonable, except for why dude went to jail and was charged with "fleeing and eluding" when any reasonable person (as above) can't really make a case for it. That isn't being "paranoid" or a "law hater", that's simply recognition that something ain't right.
