I am curious how strong this beer was.  There is a big difference between a 4% pilsner or lager, and a 10% DIPA or RIS.

It's a drinking contest. They certainly don't use DIPAs.

I think somewhere in his uploads he has a video of him just rambling incoherently for 10 minutes.

i've had 6 liters in a night and been ok. but 6l in 20mins is an awful lot of fluid, alcoholic bev or just water or whatever.

2013-07-19 04:09:24 PM

DoBeDoBeDo: Yeah it wasn't the ingestion that killed him, that's WAY to short of time. I'm guessing he had an enlarged heart and the excess pressure from the amount of puking set off a heart attack.

My guess too.  Don't even know if he had to have an enlarged heart.  My heart is fine, and puking once set off atrial fibrillation.  I didn't drink that much either (3 beers at a baseball game hours before), just got sick.

simplicimus: Lando Lincoln: What's 6 liters in Real American units?

Slightly more than 6 quarts.

It works out fine if you keep in mind it's a little more than a quart.

My fave part:  "Don't worry kids, I haven't drank in like a week so i'm just doin' it all at once."  Smart guy, abstaining for a few days beforehand.  That probably reduced the stress on his system to nearly zero.

Anyway, was that a 1-litre bottle?  Damn, before I went to rehab I was drinking that much every day but at least I was spreading it out over 16 hours.  Dude's either unconscious in 5 minutes or he pukes as soon as he turns the camera off (I can't help but notice that his vids don't continue for very long after he finishes slamming a bottle so I suspect the latter).

1.06 quart (US), 0.88 quart (UK).

simplicimus: MaudlinMutantMollusk: simplicimus: Bruxellensis: Lando Lincoln: About 17 12-ounce beers in 20 minutes? Uh, yeah...I can see how someone could die from that.

Wouldn't that much of any fluid kill you?

Consider that, on average, a 12 oz beer = 1 shot of 80 proof liquor, that's a lot of alcohol. But 20 minutes isn't long enough for the body to process that much, I doubt it was alcohol poisoning.  I forget how much water in a short period is fatal.

I think he got over carbonated

/suffocated from his own belching

Possible. Water poisoning is caused by loss of electrolytes, doubtful that could happen in 20 minutes.

nekom: Does anyone over the age of 16 actually think drinking contests are somehow fun or in any way a great idea?

Don't judge, I won a bottle of good rum in a girls-only chugging contest on a booze cruise while on my honeymoon a few years back.  Most girls can't chug for shiat anyway, so I knew I would win.  I had perfected my technique in college a decade before, and even though I hadn't done it since then, it was like riding a bicycle.

So he died of thirst?

2013-07-19 05:09:24 PM
It's how he would have wanted to go. I don't see this as tragic or upsetting. Drag his body round back, raise a glass in his honor and get on with the festivities.

/disclaimer - I'm half Irish.

I have a 5 liter stein that I sometimes use.  It is ceramic and I can usually talk my bar into giving me a volume discount to fill it up.  Plus the spectacle of drinking a huge beer helps.  It takes me about 1.5 to 2 hours to finish.

I have them place it in the walk in freezer the night before I plan on using it.  Yes, you get drunk.  No it is not deadly.

I'm not sure that amount of beer could kill anyone in 30 minutes.  Puke sure.  Maybe if you were already loaded.

Because People in power are Stupid: [farm8.staticflickr.com image 640x378]

He had more going on than just six liters (25.3605  cups) of beer.

That dude has something going on, that's for sure. He's not the guy in the article, though. Apparently the beer guzzler pictured is a contestant at some beer belly contest in California last year. (Is this his Twitter feed?)

No luck finding a picture of the unfortunate champion, unfortunately. Just an article with a video including witnesses and a sad, empty beer festival area. I have no idea what they are saying, but they seem very sad. All other images seem to be examples of what beer may look like.

2013-07-19 05:21:56 PM
loud snoring sound is probably from a heart attack. It might not have been strictly the booze that killed him. Someone that can drink that much beer or any liquid, is probably not in the best shape of their life.

This. Also, alcoholism sucks ass; I never went to rehab but I was hospitalized last January with a near fatal case of the DTs. I was drinking between .75 to 1.5 liters a day, almost every day, for all of 2011.

As an alcoholic, your concepts are completely foreign to me.

The amount of carbs in that much beer could probably overload your pancreas' ability to keep blood sugar normal and put you in a diabetic coma.

My uncle's belly looks like this but of course he's about to die because of cirrhosis of the liver. They have to drain him every other week. My aunt already asked me to play Taps at the funeral.

HailRobonia: An American walks into an Irish pub and says, "I'll give anyone $100 if they can drink ten Guinness's in ten minutes."
Most people just ignore the absurd bet and go back to their conversations, but one guy jumps up and runs out of the pub. A little while later that guy comes back and asks the American, "Is that bet still on?"
"Sure."
So the bartender lines ten Guinness's up on the bar the Irishman drinks them all in less than ten minutes.
As the American hands over the money he asks, "Why did you jump up and leave?"
The Irishman answers, "I ran out to the pub around the corner to see if I could do it."

That's a funny Irish joke or an actual Australian story.  This is the footage:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZ6Sp1Dks3Y">http://www.youtube.com/wa tch?v=sZ6Sp1Dks3Y

The host is legendary Australian tv presenter Bert Newton. Bert got sacked as a result of this incident. I've heard him tell the story of asking the guy who (in Aussie parlance) chundered what had gone wrong. "I dunno" they guy replied. "It went fine when I had a couple of practice glasses beforehand."

kindms: nekom: Does anyone over the age of 16 actually think drinking contests are somehow fun or in any way a great idea?

YES. We play every night. Jeopardy with beer rules. You get an answer wrong you drink. you get an answer right before your opponent they drink. daily doubles a re six sided dice roll and you exclusive question.

Drinking is fun. Punishing your opponents is even better.

So drinking is fun but making someone else drink is punishment? You do have the brain of someone who thinks drinking games are fun.
