C'mon, it's Czechoslovakia. It's Czechoslovakia. It's like going into Wisconsin.

What's that? He saved children from the Nazis? Now, that's ENTERTAINMENT!

Why, this reminds me of a song.

If I have two sons, the 2nd will now be named Nicholas Winton.

Because the story will eventually be made as a musical.

I may know one of those kids.

Yeah, but what about Snowden.  Lots of special people here think that he should get a peace prize.  Kind of puts things in perspective.

Well, he isn't George Bush, which means that he has completed the compulsories.

They didn't have drones back then, so he's probably out of the running.

Hope he gets it but I wonder, why has it taken until 2013 to give this guy a prize?

What a hero...and good god how humble.

"Winton kept quiet about his humanitarian exploits for many years, until his wife Grete found a detailed scrapbook in their attic in 1988 "

Nowadays you get beat over the head how heroic someone is.

2013-07-19 02:32:42 PM
Given the track record of the Nobel Committee, I'm betting heavily on it going to Bashar al-Assad or  Mohamed Morsi.

Unless they give another one to Obama for his work on drones and building Stasi 2.0.

Great, now that the award in meaningless he gets one.

While this is awesome and the guy is a hero, in what way did his actions advance peace? This isn't supposed to be a heartstrings award, but given for something meaningful in reducing conflict.

That's the trouble with Affirmative Action:  it crowds out more qualified candidates.

He'd certainly get a few Oscars if someone had the forethought to make a documentary on this.

Oh who am I kidding, they've moved on to the melodrama of intolerance of gays now.

Nice to see someone actually deserving of receiving this award on the list.  I hope he gets it, it sounds like he has earned it.

It's about farking time, they have been debating this guy since the 90s, but since he is not a politician.....

669 Jewish children

So a few years ago Neon Indian came out with this track, i.imgur.com6669 (I don't know if you know). And when I first played it I couldn't stop giggling like a child and I wondered: It's a 6-6-69. By that point who DOESN'T know?

He has been knighted (arguably the biggest honour you can get in the UK) tbf. But yeah, he deserves the Nobel prize too no doubt.

2013-07-19 03:24:26 PM
I don't know, this seems premature to me. We should wait to see whether he really achieves anything.

This. It's easy to forget that there was a time when the Nobel Peace Prize wasn't a joke--when it was awarded to people like Borlaug.

Interestlingly, he is not one of the Righteous Among the Nations because he is of Jewish heritage.

Why don't they just automatically go to Obama every year?

Yeah. I knew you could.

The Nobel Peace Prize committee has priorities. They must first make sure they have honored enough people who kill Jews (e.g., Arafat) or had at that time done nothing of note (e.g., Obama) before they start to even think of honoring someone who has saved the lives of Jews. Indeed, the fact that the people he saved were Jews will probably be enough to disqualify him. Let's face it, Sendler wasn't good enough for the Nobel committee, although do-nothing Obama was.

It is absolutely meaningless to be "nominated" for a Peace Prize.

True. You could nominate me.

And also among the nominees, Mr. Gordon Bennett who advanced the cause of world peace by once going three entire days without telling anyone on Fark to fark off.

669 is an exaggeration. Knowing Jews for the people they are, it was clearly 666.

I campaigned for that guy, and I thought his winning the NPP was an epic boatload of crap. There are so many, many more deserving candidates. Being Not Bush was a pretty shiatty reason.

The last time a holocaust child-saving candidate was nominated, they gave the prize to Al Gore for making a slide show about global warming.

Instead of actually saving children, you could just make a slide show about chicken pot pie or the dangers of the Bill of Rights. Maybe then you'll get that Nobel prize.
