Nah.  There is nothing more than cocktail-party discussion about a new X-Files movie.

For instance, look at Will Smith's IMDB page.  Upcoming films, even one with a status of "rumored."

Now look at David Duchovny's IMDB.  Nothing.

Now look at Gillian Anderson's IMDB.  Nothi--wait, she's going to be in The Curse of the Buxom Strumpet!!!

I want to believe, indeed.

I loved the last movie. It went back to the Monster of the Week framework they built the series on.

kimwim: Isn't he dead?

Yep. After the entire conspiracy take 2 went to shiat at the end of the last season, the Government was killing everyone off who could expose it. When they found him, they blew his ass up with a missile.

This.

Have Mulder and Scully in bit parts here and there to pass the torch and then kill them off.

This is not hard people.

It was called 'Fringe' and like its predecessor, it ate donkey balls in the last season.

Absolutely worthwhile show, though, for most of it and just for John Noble if nothing else.  They do namecheck the X-Files at one point and it's clear that Fringe would not be what it was without the X-Files.  For me to call it a reboot is mostly snark, but there's a germ of truth in there.

Let me stop you right there.

Worst X-Files Episode > Best Fringe episode

Fringe was so very terrible.

2013-07-19 01:58:51 PM
The X-Files was great, the chemistry between Mulder and Scully was fantastic. The first movie was enjoyable..but, well, they should have had the whole overarching plot thing mapped out more. I never saw the second one because everyone said it sucked and I was afraid. :(

But I do want to see more with those characters. Maybe they should bring it back and merge it with Fringe. Like there was another timeline split or convergence or whatever and now the Fringe division is a part of the larger X-Files program. That way you could retcon the ending of X-Files, set it where the alien stuff hasn't already happened but is still looming sometime in the future; you could tie in Massive Dynamic as part of the Syndicate or whatever the Cigarette Smoking Man and his other buddies were called, and have the best parts of both shows while dropping the stuff that wouldn't work in a combined setting. And have the shared story telling elements of both shows to draw from.

Just make sure there's an overall plot written ahead of time, and there ya go.

Always wanted to see them show up on Supernatural.  Sam and Dean run into them in a diner while investigating something weird in some small town in Idaho.  Just a one-off scene/cameo.  That'd be a hoot.

The CGI was terrible in FPS, especially when viewed today, but I can't help but love that episode.

It was a simpler time, a better time, when Doom and Quake were all the rage.

It's the X-Files, not Mythbusters.

Would it have been possible at the time? Prob not. But neither is Eugene Tooms. So if you discount it because it was too unbelievable, you basically have to discount nearly every episode of the series.

I don't really get this sort of response, which comes up often when something doesn't make sense within a fantasy or sci-fi universe. People object to violations of whatever the perceived laws of nature are within the setting they are watching/reading/gaming/etc. In the X-Files, there were aliens, inexpiable events, "monsters", etc., but the basic technology used by humans in the show was more or less contemporary with that of the real world.

Just because there were aliens and people with non-human abilities, that does not justify the existence of superpowered computers in the private sector (or where ever, can't remember the actual episode itself very well) without some sort of other explanation.

If a bunch of Star Wars blasters showed up in the middle of a Tolkien story without explanation, would you really try to justify it by saying "C'mon, if you can buy that there are orcs, you can believe in blasters"?

Not attacking you, just noting something that I have a hard time understanding.

I get what you are saying but as a counterpoint, what if the computers were refactored and reverse engineered alien technology? On a show like X-Files that is certainly believable.

Sure. As long as there was some sort of justification. And who knows, maybe that was the original idea but the explanation was cut for time. Just saying that even in fantastical settings, people expect the rules of the universe to be consistent.

If you get a chance check out Gillian Anderson in "The Fall", an English/Irish series. It's on Netflix streaming. Does a damn good job as an Englishwoman (yeah, I know, she sorta grew up there, but still).

Also, me and Mrs. Boogerwolf are watching Fringe on Netflix. Wasn't a huge X Files fan but we're up to the last part of season two and dig it. My biggest issue is the filler (monster of the week) episodes that don't move the story arc along enough or at all. I suppose that was an issue with X Files also.

Good writing and acting and a thirteen episode season is not out of the question.
