Here in Michigan, we have quite a few of those.  They're actually rather a nice way to use the land over a landfill until we get the technology in the next 20 or so years to open them up and recycle everything inside of them.

I would think you'd need at least 400 ft to make skiing viable.

Mount Trashmore is in Evanston, IL.

I always call the big one right off the Dan Ryan Mount Trashmore - crap stinks like crazy.

We got one in Virginia Beach too. Great for cardboard tobogganing.

The old city dump before Mt. Trashmore is a beautiful park, so this will ne nice in the years to come.

So what?

We have one of those out by us--Olympia Village.

I heard they had to install the ski like stanchions twice due to settling, but other than that, it's not a bad place for learning how to ski and golf.  The hotel and banquet facilities they built ain't too shabby, either.

The ski hill is in the background, obviously...

200 ft high is good for sledding, not skiing.

The clever name for your neighborhood landfill is not as clever after you realize everybody, everywhere, calls their landfill the same thing.

Here's the funny part: that's a joke that will probably go over most people's heads. It's from an episode that first aired 22 years ago, and probably stopped airing in broad syndication 10 years ago. You might catch it late at night on some third-tier station that just buys up secondary syndication rights, but odds are pretty good that people under, say, 25 years old will have never seen what you're talking about.

Cedar Rapids won't have good snow consistently enough for this to work unless they invest in snow machines. Just ask the people who run Sundown "Mountain".

//plus, it does stink, even in winter.

Some days it smells like nasty (Penford or ADM) but some days it smells like oatmeal (Quaker Oats).  Don't even get me started on the river!!

"The mountain is now 30 feet taller than it was back when Shey and Podzimek strapped on skis with the addition of 430,000 tons of flood debris, McShane reported. "

Makes for some heavy skis.
