Are they sure that the fans are chanting "You suck, asshole!", rather than "You suck asshole!" or, perhaps, "You, suck asshole!"

As the MLS fans can teach us, there are clearly many ways to suck asshole.

I was at a game once, in London, where a lone guy said, "you suck", as a joke to a player. It was funny because it was a quiet moment, and the player heard and acknowledged it, and everyone cheered. "You suck", is the least offensive thing you can say to a football play... sorry, soccer player. It was a childish taunt in good spirits. "You suck" is positively polite compared to some of the stuff the more mental fans across Europe say.

It's soccer. We already cultivate a classier breed of fan than the rest of the entire world. Nobody shoots parachute flares into the stadium after the entire crowd was banned for firing off road flares. We've never had a team face FIFA sanctions for Nazi imagery or racism. American fans aren't referred to as hooligans. Heck, we've never even had a mediocre soccer riot here. Had 'em for every other sport, but not soccer. They should be rewarding MLS fans for setting a new world standard of positive fan behavior!

But if you really want to stop it, take a page from College Basketball and toss yellow cards with penalties. Get the coach or a favorite player to talk to the audience about it sometime...

Yeah, it sounds more like your American soccer fans are generally more well behaved than people globally, because soccer fans globally love being racist, letting off flares, storming pitches to attack players, then you have referees that stab players, fans that  beheadreferees... it all goes on. So you should be congratulated for being so well behaved in general.

That's why the stadium microphones in Premier League games are mixed with a one second delay on half of them so you can't clearly hear anything.

But come on those precious little snowflakes swear better than most sailors when not in earshot of an adult so asshole isn't going to have an effect. Just let people know that the stands behind the goals are for people who like to stand, sing and chant while the stands along the side of the pitch are more family friendly.

When I've gone to MLS games, one thing I've noticed is that the 'regular' fans (ie not die hards/fan clubs) sit together. That is, you'll have a home fan sharing a row with away fans without security between them.  And no major problems.

/I suspect that won't be true for US v Mexico in September

As a Patriots fan, I have to say that was perhaps the worst refereed game I've ever seen (both teams had some bullshiat calls against them).  And I will give props to the Baltimore crowd for the sustained decibel level of that chant.

As long as I still get to hurl streamers at opposing goalkeepers I could care less about whether we can or cannot us the YSA chant.

Personally, I agree with the sentiment, but only because at least for my club (Orlando City) I want to create an environment like a Seattle or Portland where the entire stadium is one giant supporters section.

If you didn't get to see the USMNT game in Seattle then you missed probably the best crowd at an American sporting event ever.

It was awesome on tv. The natural grass surface was iffy but if we get a World Cup in the states either next year or 2022 US Soccer needs to invest in a good field up there.

The supporters in Columbus have been trying to get rid of YSA, but it keeps persisting. It's a stupid chant and could be replaced with damn near anything. I think there was one game when they decided to Moo during goal kicks since everyone calls Columbus a cow town.

Qatar, nothing like a private party, I mean World Cup, for a country of 500,000 oil barrons.
