pretty cool. not $10k cool, but cool. (though i'm sure it'll go for 5 to 10 x that)

I gave my daughter my White Album 10 year anniversary release (on white vinyl and all additional extras) for free.

Instead of 10 grand, they should've started out bidding out at 9 . . . number 9 . . . number 9 . . . number 9 . . .

My dad's got a first pressing of that with a fairly low serial number. He bought it the day it was released.

My brother and I put our money together the day it came out ( $8.00 in a day of $3 or $4 dollar albums). I was 13 and it was the coolest album since Sgt. Pepper. Both of them lost long ago.  Yea, I'm old but I saw all the cool bands.

2013-07-18 05:27:19 PM
Why the hell would anyone want to pay that kind of money for the first one off the production line?  Everyone knows that you shouldn't bother buying until they've had a chance to get all the bugs out of the system.

/I'd be surprised if it was even playable.  Remember Vista?

Yeah, I don't know much about collecting anything really, but this was a special pressing.  Seems like that diminishes the value.  I'd think a low-numbered one that was released to the public would be what you'd want.  Feels more "real".

I can't find it now, but I could swear somewhere I read (in an interview with Paul) that John had called "dibs" on number 1 when it came out. So where did this come from? Is Yoko hard up for cash at the moment?

2013-07-18 07:26:51 PM
I thought they gave the real number 1 to the Queen and then they all got 2 thru 5? TFA mentions something about this being a special series of 1's for execs and it's unsullied by vinyl discothoniques. If this is one of those (series of 15,000) then it's worth about $20, if it's the Queen's copy it's worth slightly more, especially as she quite famously traded it with Elton John for some other LPs as she felt it was a little too avant-garde to have in the house, and Charles was scared of it. Instead she had Elton John give her a four disc set of ABBA demos which went down a storm at Claridge House and the parties her sister Margaret hosted, usually frequented by characters like Jagger, Bowie, Warhol and Escobar. Elton John in turn gave the Queen's copy to Pol Pot, or was it Michael Jackson? Anyway, someone owned it and I guess they're done with it now and are selling it on.
Nice songs, some of them.

The "A" indicates it's a US pressing.  TFA states that the low numbers were divided up among Capitol execs.

The Beatles split the first 100 EMI (UK) pressings, 25 apiece, and yes, the story is that John demanded and got 0000001.  The thing I've always wondered is how they divided the following 99, and what became of them, as they've never turned up.

/Paul's original idea for the numbers was that they'd hold some sort of lotto and give away a prize, like meeting the Beatles.  The rest of them told him it was naff, so they didn't do it, but he used the idea in the 1970s with a pressing of one of his singles.

Got a swbo 101 (US first edition) of this album for free...embossed cover...stamped serial number.  Case has some split & taped seams (thanks to previous owner) but the vinyl is in nice shape.  Probably couldn't get much for it, but still a nice freebie...

I've got the White Album with 000089 or 00000989, but it's not the grey print like it's pictured in the article, but stamped in and colorless.  Always wondered if it was worth anything but I doubt it.  I bought it from a "record" store in Europe years ago, but years after the White Album was released

When Manson got the cd version of the White Album,  after repeated listenings, he stated that the Beatles weren't really telling him to kill, and that it must have been a bad speaker wire

Worth doing some research on, as a UK copy looks different than what's pictured in the article.

Back in the day, records were produced in the countries they were sold in (to avoid customs) so record companies mantained plants in every country.  That means that in addition to English pressings, there are likely French and German pressings as well, all of which will have variations or differences.

I wouldn't say that.  There are some true classics there.  The problem with the White Album isn't that it sucks - it is just so "all over the place" that it has no coherent vision as an album and good chunks of the album are just unlistenable.  Nirvana's In Utero comes to mind when I think of the White Album - tons of people say it is their best record, and yet large pieces of the album is just noise.

Had the Beatles not broken up, the White Album would probably be best remembered for what it is - an experiment that mostly fails.

Just this huge music fan's opinion of course.  Props to the Beatles for what they were and did.

When it came out, I said that In Utero was a really good album, and that I couldn't wait to hear the next one, as it would be their masterpiece.  More the fool I, I guess.

In today's world, the White Album would have been the moment in a band's career where the individual members would have gone off to work on their own projects.  George certainly had enough good songs in his pocket to do a solo album (Here Comes the Sun, All Things Must Pass were both writen during the White album period) and John and Paul were really moving in different directions: Paul wanted to make harder, basic rock, and John wanted to experiement and see what he could get away with.

It's diversity is why I love it. "Honey Pie" and "Helter Skelter" on the same collection? Come on, what's not to like.

But then, I think "In Utero" IS a masterpiece, so there ya go. . .

i don't trash it.  I just admit the truth - that it is all over the place, has no coherent vision as an album, and had a bunch of crap on it.  It got very mixed reviews at release.  It just is what it is and has been built up over the years into something that it really is not.  It is certainly no Abbey Road...  but people like to pretend that everything the Beatles did was just golden.

If you really want to listen to some sh*tty Beatles, check out "A Taste of Honey" or "Three Cool Cats".

The White Album doesn't stand all that well as a unified whole, granted. Especially when compared to Abbey Road. It's basically a sampler of early Beatles solo work, since at the time they were busy not getting along. But I can't think of a single track that I personally would classify as "crap". Well, OK. . . "O-bla-di, O-bla-da," maybe.
