farkingminivans. That's what I call them. Every time I'm cut off in traffic, it's by a farkingminivan. Every time I'm tailgated, it's by a farkingminivan. I've told Mr. kimwim, my obit is going to say "Dearly Beloved, no one attending Mrs. Kimwim's funeral will be allowed to drive a farkingminivan in the procession.

I can't help but feel the upside down car on the mapquest looks altogether too much like a happy face.

Impaled by a splintered piece of wood telephone pole going through your windshield while simultaneously being electrocuted.  Does not sound pleasant.

Question: assuming he isn't prevented from doing so by injuries suffered during the accident, couldn't he crawl backwards to the backseat and escape the vehicle from a door in the backseat without contacting the live wires?  Granted it is a risky maneuver.

So, did the guy almost die from the pole hitting him, or did he almost die wetting himself to death?

The lesson to be learned is never drive a minivan.

The cops don't pay them any attention when you pull out of the bar parking lot.  You can have 7 or more drunks in it and pass right by anything that isn't a mandatory checkpoint.

Police on the scene had no information about the extent of the man's injuries

If he's not dead....that's good enough.

Why aren't you fellow citizens more vocal about opposing over-the-ground wires?

They are eye sores that will eventually kill you.

Sure, it's cheaper to have poles than to bury them, but how much money is spent on repairs after storms?

The general advice is to stay in a vehicle in contact with downed power lines, because those lines may be in electrical contact with the body of the car, and if you then try to get out and ground the car with your body, you're farked.  I guess if you were in a real hurry to get away, you could try and jump as far away from the car as possible, but yeah, you do not want the shortest route to ground to be through your body.

Buried lines handle flooding... poorly.

But he survived. 4,400 volts, a creosote-covered power pole, and an impaled windshield.

I'd say he was lucky, but it was the driver in the car in front of him who was lucky.

Reminds me of a wreck in Colorado about 10 years ago or so (couldn't find a link). An SUV traveling I-70 westbound was hit by a refrigerator sized rock on the Georgetown hill. It landed on the passenger seat, the driver walked away, the passenger, yeah... Drove through the scene a couple hours later and you could clearly see the 'footprint' of the fridge sized repair in the road. Sometimes, it's just your time.

Police on the scene had no information about the extent of the man's injuries.

Probably some contusions or fractured ribs if the seatbelt caught him hard, the usual minor lacerations to the face if the airbag deployed, and severely shat pants regardless.

/hope he's okay
