Hey all. We ended up staying an extra day (til early Tuesday morning) in the Deep Maine Woods. Didn't get home til almost 1pm, well past threadclose. So sorry I missed being able to say how sorry I was for (what seemed like) many sads, and also missed Aliens many posts. Actually just finished catching up on the thread early this evening, as there was no rush since I couldn't reply to any posts. Got some nice pix of a couple moose, a bunny, and a hummingbird.

I'm pretty much up and running.
Making notes of stuff I need to go back to get.
For example, some of the fonts I have downloaded, and some system sounds.
Nothing big or earth-shattering, but nice to have and to make it feel like "mine".
Thanks for asking.

My brother sent me a picture today of three gray cats who showed up to camp out on his daughters' playskool table on the patio:

Only one of them belong to him.  He's not sure why the other two were there, but he called it a "puddle of gray fur."  Said they spent most of the day sleeping.

Fred met me at the gate when I got home.. waits on the retaining wall for the car to show up... flopped down on the sidewalk to get his bellyrub.. I guess it is a required part of greeting at this point..  he has picked up another habit : when I come out of the basement after feeding Taylor, he will run to the tree base and scratch and squat...   I think demonstrating that the plumbing still works properly.... after two serious blockages and a new diet ... maybe doesn't want the happypill and vet visit...  which has gotten way better.. last trip he was sorta resigned about it.. vet said he just went along with everything.. thank God... stroooonnngg kitteh, and quick...  feral background still kicks in sometimes...

I hate to even say it, cuz I don't want to be the Caturday bummer, but I know some of you guys pay attention and will wonder. My Grandma died Tuesday morning at 11:25. She couldn't talk or move, but she could hear us and would make faces or noises to respond a bit, so we made sure at least one of us was with her at all times, so she wouldn't be alone and scared. I had just finished my turn for a 2 hour nap and went to go sit with her so my mom could get a nap. I sat next to her, told her I loved her for probably the eleventybillionth time while I was sitting there holding her hand, she responded a little bit, took a few more breaths and died.

Please do not get bummed out or think "omg! what do I say?" (like I do) or hesitate to have fun and raise the basement! I like fun, I am fine, will be fine and we knew this was coming. We are sad and a bit lost, but the last few years were hard, the last couple weeks nightmarish. She actually told me about a week before she died "I'd leave but you won't let me go". Mom and I both told her that when she wanted to go, it was OK, that we'd be sad, but we'd understand and we'd be OK. We are OK for the most part, just not really sure what to do with ourselves and very sad, but at the same time we are happy that her suffering is over. Mom is going on her scheduled vacation Sunday still, because she needs it badly, and we'll figure out who is going to take her and grandpa's ashes back to Norway when we get them back. So, on with life, best we can.

Thank you to my Caturday family and all the other Farkers who have given me tons of support, lots of hugs and ear skritches for teh kittehs and pics of things to make me smile. My grandma loved you guize too, even if she didn't understand most of it. lol!

Thank you, SG. Heh. I told my mom yesterday that right before Grandma died and I told her how very much I loved her, and she responded a bit "what I mean by that is she acted like she was trying to say something, I don't know what, maybe 'quit touching me' or 'just leave me alone' or something, but I'm going to tell myself she was saying 'I love you too, bug'". My mom lol'd. I was my grandma's happy little love bug, and her favorite person ever ('cept grandpa when he was alive), so no matter what she was trying to say, I know what she meant in her heart.

Now here's a goggie vs kitteh acceptable areas for petting guide:

As nifty as large predators are, and as much as I love kittehs, and as much as playful kittehs are fun, I'm kind of thinking the large, predatory, playful variety of kitteh would fall under "terrifying" if it were a real world situation rather than the "yay!!! get 'im!" *bounce bounce bounce* I'm getting from the pic when I know the real action is safely far, far away from me.

You'll get it eventually. My mom's new laptop runs Win8 and she was fighting with it rather than exploring it. Then again, I'm the one who still hasn't even figured out her camera she's had for months now, so I'm not one to talk about my Mom's silliness with a new OS, am I?

The free one is a surprise chick. I think they are just finding a way to get rid of excess roosters, I will be very surprised if Frodo is a hen. But it is fun to try and guess what they sent.

My son was able to get the breed right away because the chicks of this breed are so distinctive. It is a very calm chick compared to the others, he kind of looks like a little penguin next to the others.

I moved them into the little house with my old crippled hen Suzy, she just gave me a WTF look when I started putting them in with her. She pecked at the few that came near her but did not make any effort to attack them. In a few days she should start to mother them. She fostered King George and Esmeralda for me when they were biddies.

Many of you may remember when this photo went viral (man comforting his arthritic, geriatric dog in the waters of Lake Superior because floating like that gave the dog relief):

Schoep, the dog, went over the Rainbow bridge on Wednesday at the age of 20. His servant, John, received so much money in donations for his care that he is now using the extra to help "30 or 40 Schoeps" who live with low income families in the north Wisconsin area get medical care (including geriatric care and spaying/neutering of the youngsters). John credits Schoep with saving his life when he was suicidal and wants to do what he can to help others keep their pets.

I zeroed in on Bill the Cat right away. Bloom County was my favorite comic strip in like forever. I even still have my Bill the Cat plushie. Now that Bloom County is gone, I like Get Fuzzy, of course. Bucky is my cartoon kitteh fave with the crazy and the crafty and the thinly veiled (if veiled at all) insults.

Condolences to Real Women & her mom on departure of Gran.  Figures it'd be shortly after last week's Caturday closed.  BTW, Wasabi-Chan, last Caturday's button-'shroom-outfits-to-heal-in kitty, got space on Care2Causes also.  Haven't seen her on LoveMeow  yet but that may be an oversight.

Remember it well, and though Schoep (pronounced 'Shep', maybe?) has gone, 20 is a damn good life for a dog and the owner is obviously doing great things with the donations.

My condolences to you.. very similar with my Mother.. apparently unconscious, labored breathing.. but she seemed to be able to control some facial muscles..  wrinkles on her forehead would move, like she was acknowledging that she could hear us.. I knew that she was still there..  was on the phone with my slightly older sister and there was definite awareness by Mom..  then the movement slowed and stopped.. she looked very peaceful.. and you could feel her temperature dropping... we all said goodbye and she left us... great Lady, best Mom ever... we all were very lucky to have the family we had.. we still keep in touch..   It does help to get it out.. and we are here for each other...  and Mom would have loved Caturday... and the Family....  not sure about CAD... somewhat risqué for her...

Cat For Adoption - Please Help - DC/VA/MD- Can Travel (Re-Post w/ Updates)

img.fark.net

Hi Caturday Farkers - I am in need of help in re-homing one of our cats, and am hoping someone on here may be able to help. The cat in question is one of the best cats in the world and we are sure whoever adopts her will be thrilled to have her. She's the sweetest and lowest maintenance cat I've ever seen. She's a fluffy marshmallow cat that loves cuddles and cheap cat food.

Question: Why is one of the best cats in the world up for adoption?
Answer: We have three cats - Momma-Cat, Beast-Cat and Douche-Cat. We adopted them as a package deal in Dubai when some asshole tried to drown some kittens outside our apartment; one morning we woke up to the sound of Momma-Cat screaming over the bucket her kittens were in. A quick fishing trip later we were the proud owners of two kittens and a momma cat. They all got on great until two years ago when we took the momma cat to get her teeth cleaned - from the moment she got home she has been in a fight with one of her kittens, Beast-Cat (now grown up into a 16 pound monster twice his momma's size). We have tried everything but with no luck and have come to the conclusion we need to find her a new home as the regular ass-kickings she's getting are taking their toll on her.

Question: Why is she up for adoption now and not a year ago?
Answer: We recently had a baby, and since then are no longer able to give the cats, who are separated in different parts of the house most of the time, the attention they need. Further - a couple of times they have gotten in fights near the baby and it's a risk we can't continue to take.

Question: Why isn't Beast-Cat up for adoption instead?
Answer: Beast-Cat is up for adoption if we can't find a home for Momma-Cat.

Question: Beast-Cat sounds scary, will he eat me?
Answer: No. Beast-Cat is a gentle giant. He likes pats and playing fetch. He is a lot more energetic than Momma-Cat and more vocal, although despite his size he has a tiny kitten mew. He is pretty smart for a cat and can open doors. He looks similar to Momma-Cat but has a pink nose.

Question: I am a masochist and don't have any easily breakable possessions I care about, is Douche-Cat up for adoption?
Answer: Sure, although only once we find a new home for one of the other two as he tends to be a calming influence on the others. Douche-Cat is a small and wiry little bastard with a speckled coat and white paws/belly. He looks like he's wearing a tweed tuxedo. He is very energetic, tends to knock things off shelves and has a surprisingly loud and unusually jarring meow. He doesn't like being picked up and will hunt you for a few days after if you try. He's not keen on pats but if you make a fist and hold it out he will nuzzle it, like he's rubbing faces with a cat. He enjoys playing with ribbon-on-a-stick toys, which will be provided.

Question: Why not put her in a Cat Shelter?
Answer: She does not do well in cages and living in one would be a strain on her that we could not inflict on her, and would also make it hard to find someone to adopt her as they would not see her at her best.

Question: Have you tried X?
Answer: Yes

Question: Is she house trained?
Answer: Yes. They are all in good health and have the usual cat vaccines. They have not been de-clawed and will come with a scratching post.

Question: In the photo she looks like she's at the Vet - is she dying?
Answer: No - She was losing patches of hair due to over-cleaning herself out of anxiety due daily ass-kicking by Beast-Cat. She is recovered now as we have completely separated them into different parts of the house, a solution that is not possible in the long term as it basically involves locking her in the bedroom in the attic, which isn't fair on her and she deserves a home where she can get the love and attention she deserves.

Question: What is the return policy?
Answer: Our goal is to find her a new home where she will be happy, not just dump her. If the adoption does not work we will be happy to take her back and try to re-home her elsewhere.

What's wrong with pink?" or "I don't like that man. He needs a hair cut. Are those tattoos? Dear Jesus! Is he GERMAN?!?" variety instead of the helpful advice variety. LOL! I love my Grandma and her stubborn self. Actually, she was Lutheran, so they're probably swilling coffee and trying to convince the big dude/dudette/whatevers may or may not be there/wherever to go easy on the Heathen granddaughter.

For those unfamiliar with disir, think "ancestral mothers", but the original Germanic tribes version (Scandinavians being one of the original Germanic tribes and blah, blah, blah).

Warm hugs - I'm glad you're handling this s well.

Thank you, ArmednHammered. I actually went through most of the grieving process before she died, which was actually one of the harder parts of it because when I realized that's what I was doing, I felt incredibly guilty. I have no idea why, but I did. At this point there really is just trying to remember what "normal" life is like again. After over 10 years of caring for her, about half of those on each end of it being full-time, hands on type care, that's going to be hard to remember how to do. We'll get there, though.

Greetings All!!
I've pretty much been just lurking for the past few months. (Had a bizzie!)
I also, recently... 'fell over the line' of crazy-cat-lady.
I went from my 3...to my 4....still on the *CCL - in training" side....
to being the slave to a blended clowder of 9. That's nine.

I am SO proud of this photo.
It took them only 6 weeks to train me to ...roll out the rug (aka trough), ring the bell to 'awaken/arouse' them, and get 8 bowls filled with their treat of gooshey foods. ( I split 3 cans 8 ways... and give the 'old man' a tsp &½ of baby food)

Clockwise....starting with the red collar... the backs/butts belong to:
Psycho, Thomas, Jazz, Luscious, Buddy, Gizzard, Mystery, Lucky.

Been a really long week in the basement of Mordor. Told the boss I'd had enough for a week and left at 2:00.
Went out and found some of the "Farking Wheaton w00tstout" made by Drew, Wil Wheaton and Greg Koch of Stone Brewery. I have to say, it's pretty damn tasty. It's dark, thick, hasn't been hopped to death and best of all it's 13% alcohol, what's not to like? I grabbed three of the 24 Oz. bottles and I don't expect them to last the night. ;-) It's good enough that I'll buy a case if my local store has one available.
/not a paid spokesman etc. etc.

Please excuse me while I go whip up some chili for dinner so I can do the following later....

The biddies came in the mail on Wendsday morning, one did not survive the trip but the rest are looking really healthy and strong. My son identified the free exotic breed as a blue chochin. A large breed with feathers all the way down its legs, they will cover its feet when it is grown. I have named it Frodo.
[fbcdn-sphotos-e-a.akamaihd.net image 850x637]

Don't they tell you what they are sending??? Or is it supposed to be a surprise?

There is always the slim chance that Frodo is a girl, if he decides to be a roo my son has dibs on him. When George came in the garage he went up to the cage and checked out the little ones. They looked so small next to him. They all stopped peeping and stood in awe as the looked them them over.
I moved them into the new little hen house with old Suzy last evening. Today she is keeping an eye on them but they are not too sure of the giant chicken in their world. Hatchery chicks have never seen an adult bird. They have much to learn.

catmandu: Many of you may remember when this photo went viral (man comforting his arthritic, geriatric dog in the waters of Lake Superior because floating like that gave the dog relief):

[i283.photobucket.com image 634x416]

Schoep, the dog, went over the Rainbow bridge on Wednesday at the age of 20. His servant, John, received so much money in donations for his care that he is now using the extra to help "30 or 40 Schoeps" who live with low income families in the north Wisconsin area get medical care (including geriatric care and spaying/neutering of the youngsters). John credits Schoep with saving his life when he was suicidal and wants to do what he can to help others keep their pets.

I am so sad for his loss.  I remember the story well!  Thanks for sharing that with us.

It started with a single screw.....

In early spring the screw popped that was holding my electrical weatherhead to my house. Second time it's happened....no big deal. I normally handle any and all home repair myself, but because the sheathing on the feeder cable is worn and due to be replaced (...and because I'm not feeling particularly suicidal this time around) I decided to call an electrician. My intuition was correct, the feeder cable needs to be replaced. I was ready for that but I wasn't aware that sort of repair required inspection before power is restored.....and in order to pass inspection I'll need to have my entire service replaced.

I have two fuse/breaker panels. One is near the entrance in the garage and the other is upstairs...both need to be updated along with all associated feeders. Oh, did I mention the meter socket is bad too?

I'm nervously awaiting the estimate. I'll still get other estimates but this guy comes highly recommended. He also reeeally want to buy my Lincoln. We may be able to work something out.

I even have it looking familiar!
No, you cannot have!

I lived with Vista for 5 years, I'll figure out Windows 8.OlderGuy: sherpa18: predle: This is me trying to figure out Windows 8. About the only thing I've been able to figure out is how to post to Caturday.

There is an add-on available that will restore your start/menu button so that you can find stuff. As I don't use 8 myself, I have no experience with it, but I have heard good things about it.

[i415.photobucket.com image 328x444]

Don't know for a fact, but have heard that service pack 1 for Win8 is out... supposedly has a fix for the menu issue.... couldn't find it in MS d/l center....

I checked on microsoft's website and there aren't any SP's available for Win8 yet - I'll keep checking. I've lived with Vista for five years. If I can do that I think I'll probably be able to deal with Win8. All I need is time and patience, neither of which I have an overabundance of right now

.[predle576.smugmug.com image 800x600]

SP for Win8 is scheduled for release this fall..  Upgrade.. Win8.1.. free as SP to Win8 users, will replace Win8.0 to buyers....

ArmednHammered: Been a really long week in the basement of Mordor.

Oh man, I feel you on that!  We finally got the call from the electrician....my panel can stay where it is (in a storage closet) but there can't be anything in front of it for 3 ft.  There is a closet rod full of coats right in front of it.  So....I will pull everything out, and remove the closet rod.  Once it all passes, I will put it all back up.  I have NO storage up here.... estimate for all of it is about 5 grand.  That is to replace both services...wiring and panel boxes.  I'm glad that I rent.

I had a new roof put on about 7 years ago and had to have the county inspector out to approve it. The farkhead actually had the nerve to ask where the coffee was at 1:00 in the afternoon (he was supposed to show up at 09:00). I told him to go to the doughnut shop or show up on time if he wanted free coffee. He started to biatch until I showed him the digital recorder I was holding.

When I took a few college courses about 8 years ago I had to show proof of immunizations like any other new student. Understandable, but my parents didn't have/couldn't find my shot records from when I was a kid (30 years later) and my Dr. from that time is dead. I ended up having to get blood tests done to prove I'm still immune.

Around here the work can only be done by a registered electrician. Aside from that the only thing that needs to be relocated to adhere to local code is the service attachment to the house. Current code states it can't be within 3 feet of a window. I can see why....if the weatherhead sags anymore i could easily grab it from the window. :o) It's already at a corner so we just need to wing it around to the other side. The rest is good where it is.

I'm still concerned about the fishing they'll need to do to get the new feed to the second panel. This house was built in the early 50s and everything including the garage is finished. There will also be some skullduggery going on around the second panel as there's a pocket door nearby.

and on that happy note, I have to go eat, and then go to bed. My neighbors since about the 1st of July have decided that shooting off fire arms at 1 or 2 in the morning is a fun thing to do.
which for me means I don't go back to sleep after that. See you all in the morning! Hopefully well rested. :D

You fix that kind of behavior by shooting back. I'll be happy to take care of them for you. (I didn't say this, I was never here, I'm mostly kidding, mostly. And you have my email). People like that ruin the fun for all the responsible folks out here.

Yes, your memory is correct. The penguins are called "little penguins" and are from Australia. Their migration route takes them through an area where they can get caught up in oil spills. They often cannot be cleaned because it stresses them so much that someone got the idea to knit these sweaters to cover the oil soaked feathers. The ones that can get cleaned lose their natural oils that insulate them so the sweaters help them too. When a news report went out and mentioned that the rescue could use more sweaters, they received so many that they had to tell people to stop. Over the years, they used up the stash (more oil soaked penguins plus the rescue mascot is a life sized Little Penguin toy so they started selling the toy with an optional sweater) and about a year or two ago, the call went out for more sweaters.

Spinnyr: The "Beauty-Butt", Luscious ... Her eyes are light-light blue, and sometimes---don't know why--- they turn really red.

Technically, because the light of the flash occurs too fast for the pupil to close, much of the very bright light from the flash passes into the eye through the pupil, reflects off the fundus at the back of the eyeball and out through the pupil. The camera records this reflected light. The main cause of the red color is the ample amount of blood in the choroid which nourishes the back of the eye and is located behind the retina. The blood in the retinal circulation is far less than in the choroid, and plays virtually no role. The eye contains several photostable pigments that all absorb in the short wavelength region, and hence contribute somewhat to the red eye effect.

Because all white cats are basically furry little terminators.

I remember reading about this before.  What a wonderful guy.  Also, am currently reading A Street Cat named Bob by James Bowen and loving it.  People who hate on poor folks for having animals are douchebags.  We may not always have the money to buy the most expensive toys/food etc... but we love our furbabies as much, if not sometimes more, because for some of us, the animal is the only true friend we have.

Already 80 here at 9am   :)

86 here, going to 94.. TStorms this afternoon.. need to get all the grass cut before that happens...  bought all the paint yesterday plus some needed accessories... oil primer to cover the oil blue.. then latex as a finish coat.. consulted a paint contractor friend... I keep his AC running.... he offered to let one of his guys moonlight on this... may take him up on that, especially on the trim work.. lots of scraping yesterday, more today... new windows have white trim, will stick with that....   back to back cold fronts coming through in the next few days.. and back to the Brewery Monday.. have a compressor to change out on #1 chiller.. will be somewhat cooler with storms to dodge....

TooManyRtClickieWorthies on pg 6 which I now type at ft of.  So many good kitteh pix.  But especially the .gif by captain feedback at 10:40ot last eve of sidewise streetcar.  That likely won't  be what the ones here in Zinzinnati will look like when put into service in 2016 (Official Guesstimate). So Many here say Not Only No But H--- No!  Something else requiring a levy.  Streetcars where already in place are cool & useful, but not necessarily if a burg must start from Square One.
Thought I heard a knocking at door, but seems to have been figtree of my so far non-existent hearing aids.  Plumbicon has 'em (was in traffic accident few yrs back that engaged air bags, which in tight car altered his eardrums -- figures he's a Sound Guy besides electrically talented, doesn't it?).  He does mumble at times, making me think I could use 'em.
Oh Heck!  Furrgot to say Good Meowning!

Day 8 of 9 days off. My lawn needs it too, but we had a quick downpour late last night and even w/o that, my lawn doesn't dry out til late afternoon because of morning dew and so much of it being in the shade. Plus, the taller the grass gets the longer it takes to dry out. Plus I DON'T WANT TO DO CHORES WHILE ON VACATION!

And some cats to make up for my whining

Spinnyr: Greetings All!!

[i975.photobucket.com image 850x637]

Clockwise....starting with the red collar... the backs/butts belong to:
Psycho, Thomas, Jazz, Luscious, Buddy, Gizzard, Mystery, Lucky.

This is the 'old man', Koa:
[i975.photobucket.com image 512x384]

That's quite the pride. We use to give our old man baby food to. I miss that guy.

This is day 13 of 15 days off for me. We didn't go anywhere special so I spent much of the time working on home projects that have been hanging over my head and relaxing in the AC. I got just about all my chores done except for power washing and treating the deck.

All in all it's been relaxing and I can't really complain. I would have like to have spent more time out but it's been entirely too damn hot. This time I completely disconnected from work...no email or any contact whatsoever. I have no idea nor do I care what awaits me on Tuesday.

I don't know much, but I do know they are incredibly expensive (I think I heard in the $5,000 range) and the price, and legality, of the kitten will vary based on what percent of the cat is Serval vs domesticated cat. Also, they hiss like snakes and are gorgeous!

Told ya I didn't know much!

Hi Catuday peeps!  A big salamander skittled inside and is nowhere to be found. I called a rescue person and waiting for his call back. It was pretty big, black and red, with a fat body, pollywog tail and rounded warty head. It's about 11 inches long and can move at warp factor 9, surprising me into a "Yelp". ha ha ha.
OlderGuy- So cute to hear new tricks, sounds like he is one smart kitteh! Isn't it nice to have such a sweet "welcome home" ?

Yeah, it's nice here right now - according to my magical temperature tellin' device, it's 70 in the shade on my patio, but it's supposed to be in the low 100's today. Thankfully, it is so rarely humid here, it's actually tolerable. When it was humid and in the 100's a couple weeks ago, you would have thought there was some huge, community wide disaster we were all so confused, upset, cranky and every negative emotion you could think of. That's how rare humid weather here is here - we just don't have the coping skills for it, so when it happens "zOMGs! I'm dying!!!" is about what it feels like to us. Thankfully, that homicidal humidity only lasted a week and now we're back to "brick pizza oven" temps, no humidity. I'd still head straight to that beautiful mountain in your pic, though. We could go Squatchin' in between snowball fights! YAY!!!
